I just saw Mark Russell is writing a Superman Mini series.... with Mike Allred on art. Will Slam buy it?
Seriously though, sounds awesome... One Star Squadron was the first thing by Russell that I didn't love.. so this will tell us once and for all if he can write established characters, or if he's one of those writers that just does much better with their own toys.

All I've read by him is the re-imagined Flintstones series, and I thought that was pretty good (and it was a critical darling if I recall). I've also heard many good things about his Wonder Twins series from a few years ago. So it seems like Russell is quite adept at handling "other people's toys."
For me, the problem with this Superman series would be the opposite: I'm not really a fan of Allred's art.

This is definitely a conundrum.
I will say I’m not completely enamored of everything Russell does. His Fantastic Four book was not good. But mostly he’s a major hit for me. And I really like Allred. I suspect I’ll read the first issue and decide from there.

It's not nearly in the same league as Flintstones, Snagglepuss, Billionaire Island or Only Begotten Son but it's pretty solid. I can see how it could upset people with the way that it portrays certain DC heroes, but I don't think it's meant to be in continuity (though it wouldn't bug me either way).

I'm not sure Flintstones (and Snagglepuss, for that matter) count as writing someone else's character, since he really just made it his own.
One Star Squadron I REALLY wanted to like.. the concept was great, just didn't really deliver, IMO. I'm not so attached to the characters that their portrayals bothered me. Not all Robots, though... amazing. I didn't know he did any Red Sonja, that's intriguing.. might have to check that out.

His run of Red Sonja was 24 issues I believe, plus a 5 issue mini he cowrote (Killing Red Sonja) and a one-shot (Lord of Fools) that ties directly to his run on the main book that came out between the first and second year iirc. I am not sure off the top of my head if he did anything else. It started in 2019 with a new #1 (of course) and had a lot of Jae Lee as the main cover artists (but Dynamite does so many variants you might never see the main cover so don't judge by that). It ran for a few issues after Russell left but was cancelled for a new #1 shortly after Russell left. -M

As long as it’s not a Crisis on Infinite Slam Bradleys.

I'm reading issue number one. I really didn't have time to look in to what the dealio was going to be with this (Work is a major time suck lately). It's essentially an Elseworlds without the branding. So that's a huge plus. Superman is much more readable if he's bent even a little bit. And it gives Russell a chance to world build.
