A lot of mention of the Beatles here, and a great reminder how powerful their legacy continues to be. Until high school (when that no good metal stuff polluted my mind), they were absolutely my favorite as well, the first albums I ever bought, and the first songs I learned on guitar. It's amazing recently seeing the same thing happen with my son, the Beatles are far and away his favorite band and he discovered them all on his own.
Beatles live concerts would probably be pretty elusive for a lot of us, even before they broke up their last regular concert was 1966 (the unannounced rooftop show in 1969 of course being the brief epilogue). If anybody here IS old enough and caught a Beatles show, please do speak up!
Catching McCartney with Wings or solo and Ringo's All-Starr Band is all great stuff too, and sound like wonderful experiences. There have been some great incarnations of the All-Starr Band, but one of my favorites was when Colin Hay, Billy Squier, and Edgar Winter were amongst the supporting musicians. The chemistry was just fantastic. Joe Walsh was always great, I remember a good show with Rick Derringer as well.

The Grateful Dead for me, and I did see them live several times in the early 90s. Also saw the Jerry Garcia Band, which had a distinctive sound and repertoire, in the same era. More recently I saw Dead & Company the last time they played Portland.

I'd love to give some classy answer, but I'm still living the 80's. Ratt and Roll forever!! (and yes to live) they're great live. . I saw them on a tour that came thru Houston for "Out of the Cellar". . also on that bill? Twisted Sister touring "Stay Hungry". .and the next night was Motley Crue touring "Shout at the Devil"
that was such an amazing weekend at the Astro Arena.

Much like @mrp, mine has changed over the years.
In middle school, it was Def Leppard. Out of all of the “hair metal” bands, they always seemed to be a cut above bands like Poison or Motley Crue musically. I saw them in concert once, in 1987, which also happened to be the last concert that my father ever reviewed as the popular music critic for Pittsburgh’s largest newspaper.
In high school, I fell in love with bands like They Might Be Giants and The Dead Milkmen. Saw the former in concert twice, the latter once, but I also came to appreciate bands like INXS (once in concert) during this time.
College years and thereafter brought new sounds like Faith No More (saw them once live) and Nine Inch Nails (the champ for me, three times live, in 1994, 1996 with David Bowie, and 2001). I also dated a girl who turned me onto bands like Oingo Boingo, The Cure, The Smiths (never seen any of these live) and Echo and the Bunnymen (have seen them once, just a few years ago).
In the 2000s until now, I’m much less focused on a specific genre or band and more interested in just plain good music. My Spotify playlists have everything from The Beatles to Kacey Musgraves to The Rolling Stones to Spoon to The Who to Bruce Springsteen to Prince to AC/DC to Toxic Airborne Event to Emmylou Harris to U2 to other artists too numerous to be able to mention all of them, including ALL of the bands I mentioned above (there’s still something about “Hysteria” by Def Leppard that gets me every time I hear it).

Probably the Beatles for me, if I have to name one. Apart from being great, they have advantage of not having lingered on past their expiry date, as my other favourites have mostly done - e.g. Yes, the Who, Roxy Music, ... all contenders, but only during a certain limited span of their careers.

But I have realized as a adult (post age 35) that just like comics and reading in general, I don't lock in to one particular favorite for long, I go where my mood takes me. Favorites become those things I return to on a regular basis rather than something that is omnipresent in a playlist. I endorse this comment. As for me, I like rock and metal. Huge fan of KISS, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, etc. As a kid (80s), I did like a lot of pop stuff such as Animotion. And rock stuff such as Dire Straits. I like a lot of bands from before my time, such as the Beatles and Pink Floyd. I never really enjoyed any Rolling Stones albums if I’m honest. I do quite like the Monkees.

Black Sabbath, since my early teens, and until the day I die, and then some. I've seen them 1.5 times. I'm counting the time with Tony Martin as 1/2 Sabbath. As long as Butler is in the group, though, it's more than just "Tony Iommi and some other guys". The one great tragedy of my life is that Sabbath never had an album cover that would make a good tattoo. But I have realized as a adult (post age 35) that just like comics and reading in general, I don't lock in to one particular favorite for long, I go where my mood takes me. And rock stuff such as Dire Straits. I don't think anybody in the States, when throwing out an example of a pop band, would ever name Animotion. Most people could not name the band given their one hit, or name the one hit given the band name. My wife is always listening to whatever station is playing the most '80s pop, and I never hear Animotion. Me, however, I really like Obsession, and it hasn't left my playlist since I first heard it. "My fantasy has turned to madness, and now my goodness has turned to badness" Move over, Dylan!

I'm in the camp with driver1980 and @mrp. I couldn't possiby pick a favorite. My tastes run from Celtic to show music, from Motown to the Beatles, from Wagner to one-hit wonders, from Dylan to James Taylor. I particularly love Sondheim and Springsteen. Hell, one of my favorite albums is of Itzhak Perlman playing classic movie themes accompanied by the Boston Pops!It does all depend on the mood, though. I've seen Bruce several times, most notably at Fenway Park a few years ago, because my wife and I were able to go with our three (adult) kids, who grew up singing along to "Born to Run" in the back seat, not just on long trips, but even to the grocery store. My two sons, who are musicians, also love the Beatles, among many, many groups and singers. My younger son saw McCartney saw McCartney at Fenway maybe six or eight years ago now and was in heaven. He saw B.B. King when he was about 10 or 12, and actually got to touch Lucille and look BB in the eyes (he smiled at my son) as he went up the aisle. Another transcendent moment for him.

This is every musical act I've ever seen live (some were opening acts for the others): Ambrosia The Beach Boys (sans Brian Wilson) Stephen Bishop Mary Chapin Carpenter Cecilio and Kapono
Curtis Delgado and the Stilletos Doobie Brothers (twice, once with and once without Michael McDonald) Foreigner Art Garfunkel Amy Grant Heart (twice) Dan Hill Billy Joel Manhattan Transfer (best show I ever saw, musically) Paul McCartney and Wings Mister Mister Dan Peake (from America) Bernadette Peters (she came down off the stage and sang directly to me!) Smokey Robinson Bruce Springsteen Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band (featuring Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren, et al) Al Stewart Tower of Power and if comedy counts: Harry Anderson George Carlin (shared a pipe with him!) The Smothers Brothers Steven Wright Cei-U! I summon the great memories!

While there’s likely a dozen artists that make up my “favorites” list, if I’m only allowed one I’ll go with the Butthole Surfers. I’ve seen them thirteen times and like to believe there’ll be an opportunity for a 14th at some point.
