This is probably the main conclusion I drew from the debate: it wasn't really a level playing field because the Teamsters were handicapped with an indefensible thesis. Even if limited to American superhero comics it would have been a tough debate, but for comics in general it was an impossible one.

I'm going to call this one early since I think we likely have most of the votes in at this point (and I'm also going to be away for a bit!) Before I announce that though, I just want to again thank everyone who participated, as well as those who followed along and also added their votes. At the end of the day, having the voting was to add a little "competitive spirit", but the real point of a structured debate is not how hard it is to take one position or the other, but rather the creativity and resourcefulness in doing so. And I would argue both sides did that in spades and made for just a fantastic exchange overall. So without futher ado, the "golden no-prize" goes to...the Go-Go Checks!! Congratulations to Prince Hal , pinkfloydsound17 , MWGallaher ! And all that glitters isn't gold, as an also well deserved "silver no-prize" goes to...the Teamsters!! Likewise, a big shout-out to shaxper , MDG , driver1980 . Lastly, my selfish 2 cents worth of commentary...I found myself going back and forth in opinion as each side posted. I REALLY like the angle the Teamsters took on interpreting "for comicdom" among other aspects of their argument. But no doubt the Go-Go Checks brought a great barrage of arguments. Great stuff guys!! |

Is there any doubt that the 60's were probably one of the most important decades for comics? Yes. But is it the best in comicdom? I still say no
Yes, great characters and ideas were created during this era and arguably this kept comic books alive. But I attribute later decades to keeping it alive and propelling comics into a much more mainstream eye, in addition to having superior artwork and stories than what the 60s brought. Every great thing has a beginning, an idea, an original version. And yes, without that, the thing can never exist. But to me the importance should be put on improving the thing, and for me, comics of the 70s, 80s and even into today have done that and that is the important part.

I also think it comes down to how you view the question. If I am trying to get someone new into comics, into this world, so it can continue to have fans who keep this hobby alive, I am NOT sending them to the 60s. Young collectors today, they know the history but the desire to read and consume it is low, generally. The want action and what resembles what they have grown up on (nearly two decades of MCU marterial) so sending them there to start (usually the 80s for me when recommending because new readers seem to like the grittier action) is what keeps the hobby alive. Maybe the start to go further back and enjoy it, maybe not. For me though, the most important decade that revitalized comics and has kept people going back for more (and new readers and collectors to jump in and enjoy and still feel they can own/obtain a piece of history) is the 1980s. Perhaps a future debate around this decade could be of interest  |

I'd be curious to hear what the participants' actual beliefs are. Speaking for myself, I could've argued either side. My ideas abut the 60s would be the same, just they'd all be followed with "but...".
But, as I was working on this--or more honestly, dumping out ideas and letting shaxper think things through and put them into shape--I become more convinced that if any decade of the 20th century could be considered the most important for comic books, it was probably the 60s. Creatively, most mainstream comics for the 30 years after it was either a reaction to, repudiation of, or attempt to recapture "peak Silver Age."
It's also where the non-mainstream comics began by people who loved comics as comics, independent of how the industry worked. This includes creation, publication, distribution, retail, and after-market.
I think, though, since 2000, things have changed enough that it really is a non-comparable time.

I'd be curious to hear what the participants' actual beliefs are. I was lucky enough to have believed in the argument, hence my contributions. Although it was an interesting exercise, I am not sure I can be an advocate for something I don’t believe in. I’d find that impossible, so kudos to those who do that kind of thing. For instance, here in the UK, police officers will need degrees, if it hasn’t already been introduced. I do not believe that should be a requirement. So if someone asked me to advocate for why police officers should require degrees, I would lack even 1% of conviction to put forward such an argument. I’m not sure I could contribute to something I don’t believe in. |

The very reason I did my best to reframe the question at the heart of the debate was because I absolutely do not believe the '60s was the best era of comics. The best era for comics? Sure, I could make that work. I think I was pretty up front with that. I enjoy the challenge of being assigned a side I don't agree with because it forces me to find an aspect of the side that I do agree with and then work from there. I never lie to win (or, in this case, lose) a debate. |
