Even with the dramatic change in her power set I really felt like this did a great job of capturing the energy of the Wilson's comic. It was fast, bright and fun and yet it had a strong sense of reality at its core. The music was great, I loved the family dynamic and the opening was perfect...but I really think this is something where Disney should have released the first two episodes at once. While this first episode does do a great job of introducing Kamala and her family and school life it doesn't really give you a sense of purpose or really hint at a direction the show is going to go in. I really hope it picks up and delivers a solid hook in the next episode, because if it does I really think the show could be something special for a lot of people in the same way the original book is.

Really enjoyed the first episode. I recently reread the first arc that introduced Kamal Khan and aside from the powers/origins alteration, it was an amazingly spot on adaptation.

Looking at her wiki page, I see that Kamala first appeared in 2013... I can't believe how fast time flies!
But then, the Young Avengers are still a brand new thing to me...

One thing did bother me, and that has to do with the fact that her parents are so grossly over-protective
Have maybe read a little bit of the comic, but not much, so I have no clue if that's faithful to the book or what

It's pretty faithful to the comic, and her parents were no touch on how overprotective my mother was before I left for college, so I could very well connect with the character on that level. -M

It's been a while, but I seem to recall issues having to sneak out and do superheroing... there was definitely an arc with her sister getting married and her misssing stuff too.
Good to here it's true to the series.. the power change REALLY annoys me. I'm waiting until it's all out so I can what that and Kenobi in one month of paying.

Finally got to watch this last night, as I was waiting until my girls got back home (they were away on a mission trip with our church), as we try to watch all of the movies together the first time through.
It was a fun, charming show. The infectious joy that Iman Vellani radiates playing Kamala really sells the whole idea, as she literally was a fangirl in real life before landing the role.
The change in her powers is a little disappointing, although understandable, as Marvel seems to want nothing to do with Inhumans, and it would be a lot to explain (like terragenesis) that would take away from the main story they want to tell. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt as the story unfolds.
Her parents were just as overprotective and overbearing in the comics, so that aspect rang pretty true. As the father of a 16-year old HS junior myself, I get it; we want to keep our kids out of every possible bad situation because it would hurt us incredibly if any harm, no matter how slight, came to them.

That's great to hear. Comics-related TV shows and films would benefit from a little more joy, in my humble opinion.
Heck, so would comics, period!

I watched the first two episodes. It's...fine. I'm clearly not the target audience and I've never read a comic with Kamala Khan, so I'm not remotely invested. Which is fine. Good for them for doing something to expand their representation.
It's still better than Moon Knight or the incredibly dire What If?

Never read a comic with this version of Ms Marvel but I'm a digital hoarder and I'm always up for a good Super Hero show (Emphasis Good). So based on the majority views here, I'll download the series for safekeeping and watch the stream when the series concludes

Good for them for doing something to expand their representation. It's still better than Moon Knight or the incredibly dire What If? I’m not the target audience either, although I did read the entire first series via TPB borrowed from my local library a number of years ago. The show is faithful in a lot of ways, and I’m enjoying it enough that I would keep watching it even if... ...my two teen daughters, who ARE the target audience, weren’t thoroughly engaged with it. They watch it, rewatch it, check out the social media posts about it, and my younger daughter is spending her own money, made from working in the snack bar at our swim club, on the TPBs for her own collection. Representation damn sure matters, be it for Brown girls from Jersey City or teen girls from the suburbs of Pittsburgh. Guys like us are getting older and won’t be around forever, so Marvel is doing a good job of creating their next generation of fans in new ways.
