The, there is Raul, the talking cat. The one lone thought balloon, from Reuben, is the only time it is addressed. He is a talking cat and that is all there is to it. No one finds it weird. No other talking cat is seen. Raul turns quickly into a fan favorite, as he is an intelligent and witty creature, yet still retains the feline personality. If you have ever owned a cat, you must realize that an intelligent talking cat would be someone who will be at the center of trouble. Accotding to Don Cameron, Raul was inspired by a cat Chaykin owned that seemed to mumble a lot.

The concept that the actor could be replaced by a hologram seemed pretty far out when I was a teenager, but considering how good the CGI animation software has come...it's pretty much here except passing the 'uncanny valley'.

Bruzenak said he once delivered a $400 lettering bill, to First. $400 doesn't seem like a huge amount of money, even for the 80s. Do you know how many pages Bruzenak would have lettered to earn that amount, or what sort of page rate a run of the mill letterer might have been earning in those days? I don't know his rate. The statement comes from The Art of Howard Chaykin. Bruzenak is interviewed, in relation to AF. He is talking about the amount of work and makes this statement: "We were producing pages in the relatively medieval fashion of the mid-80s, with hand lettering on the art boards, flat-color printing and mechanical paste-up. Howard's use of double-tone board on Flagg posed a technical problem which led me to work with X-Actio chiseled marker pens, but that negated using White-Out for corrections. I scoured the Dover type books, movie posters and record albums for fonts, and bought out an art store's old supply of Prestype rub-on letters for credits and SFX. When a talking robot was introduced, I had type set and handed a $400 invoice to First. None of this had been done before and it all sounds so primitive today, but computers were still five or six years away from easy use of economic accessibility." Bruzenak doesn't elaborate further on that invoice, whether that was for an issue, a cover, a few pages or what; just that it sounds like a large invoice relative to other comics of the period. Mostly, in the piece, he discusses their background, how he ended up working with Chaykin and the sheer amount of work both put into things. I think he is mostly trying to get the reader to understand the dedication they had to making this series great; but, that it came at a cost and couldn't be sustained, forever; and it wasn't.

The concept that the actor could be replaced by a hologram seemed pretty far out when I was a teenager, but considering how good the CGI animation software has come...it's pretty much here except passing the 'uncanny valley'. It happened, more or less, within a decade. Fred Astaire was dancing with vacuums, Natalie Cole is singing a duet with her dead father. Even at that time, computers were changing things rapidly. Tron had introduced computer graphics. Star Trek II used CGI for the Genesis briefing and SFX. Return of the Jedi used it for the Death Star II briefing. The more sophisticated computers became, the more Chaykin's extrapolation became true. It wasn't even that far-fetched then, as Disney was using primitive holograms in the Haunted Mansion and universities had been doing experimental work since the development of lasers. Chaykin had been a big reader of sci-fi, growing up and had been working in sci-fi for Byron Preiss, with The Stars My Destination. Part of why he seemed so far ahead was he was immersed in work by people who were extrapolating ahead from what was going on at universities and research labs.

It sounds like he went to a print house and hired them to set type traditionally (i.e., not "desktop publishing" on a Mac). If that's the case, it doesn't take much to run up a $400 bill.

American Flagg #2Gonna be hard to move around with that woman hanging on Flagg. Still, he can use her as a shield! Creative Team: Howard Chaykin-story & art, Ken Bruzenak-letters, Lynn Varley-colors, Mike Gold-Texas Tea Synopsis: When we left Reuben Flagg, he had placed a jamming device on the Plex transmitter, interrupting Bob Violence, the favorite show of the Go Gangs, the Ethical mutants and The Genetic Warlords. Now, Chief Ranger Hilton Krieger expects them to go insane and destroy the place. He tools up to prepare for the assault. It seems he was a might premature.... Raul the talking cat fills us in on what happened last issue and what followed. Krieger had everyone and everything on the firing line, waiting for the Warlords or Mutants to descend upon them like the Mongol Hordes.... Instead, they are passed out in their clubhouses and Gretchen Holstrum announces a party, at the Love Canal. Cyril Farid-Khan, leader of the Genetic Warlords, is out on bail and tries to unleash some prison tension on Holstrum. Flagg drags him off and Krieger offers to lock him up, so Flagg can stay and party. Flagg smells a rat but doesn't look a gift horse in the mouth, to mix some metaphors. On the way out, mayor Blitz reminds Krieger that Flagg has duty in the morning and Krieger says "Screw him if he can't take a joke!" Mandy, who normally disagrees with her father, agrees this time, seeing as Flagg has his tongue down Gretchens esophagus (a well worn path). It's nearly dawn before Gretchen and Reuben head to her place for some celebratory sex, but Gretchen passes out in her sex swing and Reuben heads home to cop some Zs. Within minutes of climbing into bed he is awakened by a message from Krieger, telling him he forgot to tell him he had duty this morning and report to the Ranger station, in an hour, in dress uniform. Flagg is assigned to act as bodyguard for Mayor Blitz. He asks why Bert & Ernie on the job and Blitz says they are not allowed in the temple. They are headed to the wedding of Alderperson Thoralee Liebowitz's daughter and her rabbi isn't a fan of robots. They head out onto the highway and eventually come upon a scrap between the Moroccan Popular Front and the Gotterdammacrats . Blitz says his policy is neutrality in gang fights and this is being covered for Firefight All Night, Live!. However, the armored limousine is sideswiped. It turns out to be a political rival of the mayor's and he isn't neutral when it comes to politics. Blitz grabs the wheel and eliminates a bit of competition, before the election. They make the wedding, where the gift table looks like an arms market. The Mayor goes to discuss politics with the Mother of the Bride, while Reuben gets acquainted with Dagmar, sister of the bride. She asks if he is really Jewish and when he affirms, invites him to accompany her to the Ladies' Room. However, all hell breaks loose as shots are fired. The wedding party is armed to the teeth and return fire. Flagg emerges from the powder room and lets loose with his Magrum .666. He meets the bride, Amy Clanahan. The attackers are Shabbos Goys, hired guns for the militant Hassidim, who oppose all intermarriage, like Amy and Michael Clanahan, even though he converted to Judaism. Flagg has the mayor reload his weapon with Somnambutol, then borrows the bride's weapon. he fires to keep their heads down, then unleashes the Somnambutol They pile into the mayor's armored limo and Flagg scrags the attackers pursuit vehicle. They head for the Plex Mall, so the happy couple can go off on their honeymoon. At the airport, Flagg and the mayor say goodbye to the couple and the mayor introduces Flagg to Ernesto Klein-Hernandez, who is there to greet Senhora Ester de la Cristo, head of 4th World Industries. Flagg meets the Brazilian VIP and then the captain of the Raymond Loewy designer Liner, Crystal Gayle Marakova. Also in the crowd is John Scheiskopf, of Tovarich Gems and Precious Minerals. Flagg and CG get acquainted and she invites him for a drink, but he begs off to get some sleep. However, he is accosted by Medea Blitz, girlfriend of Cyril Farid Khan and daughter of Mayor Blitz. She knocks him out with Buzznucks. As Flagg lies there, Ernesto and Ester walk past and discuss their plans to buy up the United States of America, from the Plex.... CG attends to Flagg, who comes to and is about to go after Medea, until Crystal explains she is the mayor's daughter and untouchable. They decide to move on and run into Mandy Krieger and John Scheiskopf, who explains he is selling Soviet Jewelry. Flagg isn't impressed. Flagg is disgusted by the corruption around him, but goes to bed. Several days pass and Crystal rings him at the Ranger Station to invite him to dinner. He accepts and Krieger sends him off to check out a call from the farm militia, about animal mutilators, just to F with him. Flagg flies out and radios in to the militia. Somnambutol is no good, as they are wearing chemical weapons gear. They are cut off from their vehicle, but they stole thermo jelly explosive from a storage shed and the harvest is pretty dry and will go up quickly, if they set it off. Reuben forms a plan. he drops Nachtmachers, blackout bombs, from his highcycle, while the militia move in, using infrared goggles. The mutilators are cornered and disoriented and one decides to cut and run. Flagg tries tackling him and the other shoots the perp, as a coward. Flag knocks the remaining perp unconscious, with his pistol and removes their gas mask. The Nachtmachers clear and Flagg discoers that the survivor is now dead, from a cyanide capsule and is a 16 year-old girl! On her forehead is tattooed the letters ASLC. Flagg relates the day's events to Crystal, as he presents her with Spaghetti Alpha Carbonara, for dinner. Crystal looks a million dollars and appreciates a man who can cook. Crystal goes to turn on Mark thrust, on the video screen, but a pirate signal feeds over it, with an illegal basketball game. The couple aren't really interested in basketball and things get hot, as Crystal strips down to her frillies (bra, panties, garter belt & stockings) but Felinus Interruptus occurs, as Raul calls and informs him that someone has murdered Chief Ranger Hilton Krieger. They arrive at Krieger's place in time to see Cyril and Medea tear out on a motorcycle. The mayor is there and tries to keep Mandy from seeing. Krieger has been shot in the head and they find blond hairs, with the smel of Shalomar, Medea's perfume (and her hair color). The mayor is forced to issue a warrant for the arrest of his daughter, for the murder of Cheif Ranger Krieger. Thoughts: Another dense issue. Chaykin does a bit more world building, as we see the environment outside the Plex Mall. We get more of the poli-club turf wars, then see politics, Chicago Style, which is the dirtiest style in existence. Chaykin has some fun with the wedding, having a Jewish group object to the mixed marriage of a goyim and a Jew, even though the goyim converted. Having the groom be an Irish Catholic just furthers the joke, as it is usually the other way around, when it comes to objections to mixed marriages. We see more of Mayor Blitz and he is pure Chicago Machine politics, corrupt as hell, a power unto himself, and firmly entrenched. He makes allies to prop up his administration and eliminates enemies. We get new characters, with Medea Blitz (great name!), the daughter of the mayor and girlfriend of Cyril Farid-Khan, leader of the Genetic Warlords. She is daddy's little girl and pure trouble, as she has been indulged too much. The blond hair is different and we will learn a clue to secrets yet untold. We also meet Commander Pilot Crystal Gayle Marakova. her parents were in the Soviet Embassy when things hit the fan and were completely decadent Westernists, naming her after country singer Crystal Gayle. The character is modeled after Chaykin's then-wife, Leslie Zahler, who would soon do the coloring on the series. CG has an attraction to Flagg, though their timing sucks, here. First he is beat, then literally beaten. Then, just as they are about to discuss Marxism vs Kinsey, Raul interrupts with news of Krieger's murder. Mandy is already jealous of Flagg and Gretchen's trists (one successful, one incomplete) and I doubt she looks fondly on this. She seems to have gravitated to newcomer John Scheiskpopf, who is with her when she comes to her father's place. He is another new character, a seller of Soviet Jewelry, as a nostalgia piece, before the fall of the Soviet Government. At this point, we hadn't even hit Glasnost, let alone Chernobyl; so, who knew the Soviet Union would break up in a few years? Of course, some are trying to put it back together, without much success. Before the murder, we see the bizarre situation at the field, with the two ASLC kids. What that means is yet to be revealed; but, they are obviously fanatics, as the girl shoots her own brother, for cowardice, then swallows cyanide, rather than be captured. The subplot of the sale of Illinois continues and we learn that 4th World Industries is buying up the United States, from the Plex, as they have no intent on returning to earth. They are firmly established on the Mars and Luna colonies and are more thna happy to sell out the rest of the country. This matches the sentiment of the time that US land was being bought up by foreign interests, both from Asia and the Middle East. meanwhile, US factories had been shut down and shifted overseas, to exploit cheap labor and a lack of unions (enforced by machine gun, in most circumstances). In effect, the US was being sold off at this time, either literally, piece by piece, or metaphorically, as jobs were outsourced, causing a decline in real wages (the actual buying power of salaries) and a widening of the wealth gap. This trend continued across the 80s and 90s, until generation X became the first to earn less than their parents did, adjusting for inflation. Meanwhile, the poli-clubs reflect the problem of terrorism, as this time still featured terrorist activity globally, which had spring up across the 70s. The names reflect different affiliations, but the same kind of splintering and rivalries that developed. What's worse, it is all funded by the Plex, for entertainment, presaging the Gulf War, where the US had sold weapons to Iraq, during the Iran-Iraq War, including chemical weapons, then found themselves facing Iraq on the Kuwaiti battlefield, after they invaded the country to seize their oil fields. This became the first Info-Tainment War, as CNN and the networks broadcast constant footage of airstrikes, with gun camera footage from cruise missiles and smart bombs making the whole thing seem like a video game, rather than mass killing. CNN was already in existence at the time of this series and had been covering conflicts around the globe; so, Chaykin wasn't clairvoyant; just astute. Anyone who is from Illinois, especially the Chicago area, can appreciate the satire of the city and its politics. Illinois politics is centered around Chicago, due to its population density. machine politics and corruption go hand in hand and it affects state government, too. We weren't that long removed from the days of Mayor Richard J Dailey and the Democratic Convention and the Chicago 7 Trial. At this point in time, Chicago was under the administration of Mayor Jane Byrne, the first female mayor, though she would pass the government on to Harold Washington, the first African-American mayor of the city. The governor was Republican Jim Thompson, one of the few not to be indicted. He had followed Democrat Dan Walker, but came in on the Conservative sweep in the late 70s, though the democrats maintained control of the Legislature and Chicago. Thompson was a Chicago lawyer. He was succeeded by Secretary of State Jim Edgar, who was probably the last relatively honest guy to hold the office, who was a semi-regular customer at the Springfield Barnes & Noble, when I worked there. His successor, george Ryan, was indicted and convicted for corruption, as was his successor, Rod Blagojevich, who was indicted and convicted of corruption in trying to sell Barack Obama's senatorial seat, after he was elected President of the United States. It's a pretty deep swamp, in this state. That makes Chaykin's satire even more amusing, transposed to the future. The poli-club stuff also reflects the militia and survivalist movements that permeated the 80s and we will see more of that, as storylines progress. Gee, political corruption, social satire, sex, violence.........in a comic book? There's no spandex! How did Chaykin expect this to sell? Well, aside from the sex and sexy lingerie? Just looking at the pages you can see how much work was going into this, compared to your average DC or Marvel title. The double-tone boards give the shading effects you see throughout, then the dense layers of graphics and type, not to mention the dense subplots and layered characterizations. No one could ever accuse these guys of hacking it out. Hard Times concludes with the next issue; but, the subplots continue.

ps Forgot to mention the cryptic comment from the militia soldier, "Ain't seen a kid in years." What is that all about? When you stop and think, we haven't seen any kids running around the Plex Mall.

I wonder if First was planning to follow the "traditional" comic publishing model of publishing every book on a regular schedule until the sales fall off so much it's not profitable anymore. While that works for company-owned books, where they can just assign a new writer or artist, for creator-owned properties it means the creator has to have the energy and motivation--never mind the imagination and talent--to stay on that treadmill indefinitely. That's worked for some (Cerebus being a prime example) but for something as narratively and visually dense as Flagg, did Chaykin really envision coming out with a book a month for years? I think it was inevitable that quality would taper off. Even the revival, with Vosburg working in Chaykin's style, it's a tough lift. The book might have been more successful a few years later when there was a model of periodic, discrete mini-series, like with Hellboy or Concete, that would've let Chaykin work on a new Flagg story when he had one he wanted to do. American Flagg should have absolutely been a mini-series. Failing that, it should have ended when Chaykin left the book. I find myself falling into the Dave Sim camp over this.

American Flagg #3In olden days, a glimpse of stocking Was looked on as something shocking But now, Heaven knows Anything goes........ Creative Team: Howard Chaykin-story & art, Ken Bruzenak-letters, Leslie Zahler-colors, Mike Gold-editor The missus takes over the coloring. Synopsis: The media is covering the murder of Chief Ranger Hilton Krieger, which allows Chaykin to summarize the events of last issue.... ...while commenting on the increasing tabloid nature of journalism, even in the broadcast media. The People's Republic of Great Britain amuses the heck out of me, given UK politics from the 80s onward. For an interesting alternate view, check out A Very British Coup sometime. Back to the intrigue. Mandy Krieger bulldozes her way into helping Flagg with the investigation, pointing out she knows the city better than he does and she is the best shot in the Mall. Flagg agrees and Mandy goes to get her gear. Raul tries to tell Reuben something; but, Flagg is still mad at him for leaking to the media that Medea Blitz is the prime suspect. When Reuben and Mandy meet up, she says she is also hunting a keepsake that belonged to her mother, which wasn't on her father's body or in his apartment. John Scheiskopf sees them off, though Flagg thinks he is a creep and criticizes Mandy for wearing the Soviet jewelry. Mandy calls someone named Bill and bargains for info on the whereabouts of Medea and Cyrl, trading vintage tapes of "Amanda By Night" and two episodes of "The Twilight Zone" for the info. She says they will meet ion 3 hours, which puzzles Flagg, as it will take far less time than that to get into the city. Mandy has other ideas. Flagg makes jokes about posses and Mandy informs him that the car's bed is hallowed ground and that she has wanted him since she laid eyes on him. Chaykin then proceeds to do the most erotic scene in comics, without actually depicting intercourse and pretty much serves notice to everyone else in the business who has mistaken titillation for sex. Nearly 3 hours later, Flagg and Mandy pull up to a saloon on Division, called the Chatterbox. It is run by The Witnesses, a group of senior citizens who act as literacy volunteers, undermining the propaganda education provided by The Plex. They also collect Pre-Collapse video tapes, as well as provide information services. Flagg ticks off the violations of the law: unlicensed poli-club, unlicensed saloon, illegal video library. Mandy adds a 4th, it is a strip club and Flagg sees the evidence, inside. Mandy introduces Reuben to Harris Angrilli, head of The Witnesses, while Mandy talks to "Bill." Bill gives her the info she wants, while Flagg asks Harris about the meaning of ASLC. Harris tells him, for free.... The ASLC is the American Survivalist Labor Committee, a reactionary group that split off from the Democratic Party, in the days before the collapse. They went underground, just before the bank collapse, with over 2 million members. Their politics are Pro-Nuke, Anti-Semitic, Anti-Italian and Anti-British. They haven't been heard from since the collapse. Mandy and Flagg head out and Reuben asks Mandy about the Brit, Bill. She says that under the influence of exotic herbs, he has presented her with tangible proof that he is the legitimate heir to the British throne. Except Chaykin was more optimistic about his hairline! Meanwhile, dawn is breaking over the combat zone and Medea and Cyril are hold up and arguing.... Cyril hit Krieger, but Medea was trying to shake him down with a blood test that proved he (Krieger) was the father of Medea's unborn child. Krieger was ranting about getting back at her father, when Cyril hit him. They are interrupted by the arrival of Flag and Mandy and Cyril hurls a Molotov Cocktail, to try and hold them off. Mandy shoots out their tires, before they get to the bridge and Flagg pulls alongside and takes down Cyril, while Mandy yells out that Medea is hurt bad and she is miscarrying her father's child. They pile into Mandy's car and head back to get Medea to medical care and Cyril to jail. Cyril confirms that the child is Krieger's and they were trying to blackmail him, but he denies shooting Krieger, stressing he only hit him. Back at the Mall, Medea is stabilized. Mandy asks if the doctor found any "foreign objects," which disgusts the doctor. Flagg confronts Mandy about her obsession with whatever she is looking for, from her father. She refuses to elaborate and storms off. Raul turns up and finally gets Flagg to listen to him.... He has the keepsake! He directs Flagg downtown, to a derelict area and the lock that matches the key. Reuben finds a surprise, inside... It is Q-USA, the pirate video station, which was secretly run by Krieger. It is filled with banned programming and pre-Collapse video tapes. Raul directs Flagg to a tape with Krieger's last will and testament. Krieger and Charles Keenan Blitz knew each other in high school and founded the Genetic Warlords. They were arrested multiple times, then found themselves drafted into the newly created Plexus Rnagers. They figured on scamming them for everything they could take; but, Krieger met, Peg, Mandy's mother and straightened out. Amanda came along and they were happy. They set up Q-USA, with Peg providing the technical know how, just for laughs, until the Plex outlawed sports. At that point, it became a rebellion. CK fronted the basketball team (the Skokie Skullcrushers) and they broadcast the underground games. Then, Krieger was sent to Caracas, to aid in a hostage crisis and came home to find CK and Peg, with a new baby daughter, a black girl with blond hair...Medea. Kriger kicked Peg out and kept custody of Mandy. The tape explains Krieger's operation, broadcasting nostalgia programming, Black Market Basketball and porn..the real stuff, not the Plex-authorized tease. he kept a low profile and warns whoever to do the same. he warns about the Plex's plans.... he says they are established on Mars, with no intent to return and the Tricentennial recovery Committee is a front for removing capital from the country. He also says that Manacillin, the post-coital contraceptive and anti-biotic, is part of a sterilization operation, which Flagg snorts at, but the tape is interrupted. Flagg turns to face John Scheiskopf, who tells him to remove his pistol, with his right hand (Flagg is left-handed). He then shows his badge, with Plex Internal Affairs. He was investigating Q-USA, after Flagg pre-empted the Bob Violence signal, which sent alarms through the Plex system. He witnessed Cyril and Medea trying to blackmail Krieger, then take off. He searched the room, when Krieger came through. he had enough evidence to hang Krieger, twice. Krieger offered him a bribe and then Scheiskopf murdered him. He mentions that Krieger said something about sublmininal messages and Flagg confirms they are in Bob Violence, but only he and Raul can see them. Scheiskopf asks who Raul is and the cat taps him on the shoulder, distracting him long enough for Flagg to take him down and knock him out. Flagg returns to the Mall and finds Mandy rifling his desk. he tells her about the station, but says he is keeping the keys. he intends to use it to subvert the Plex and do something to restore the honor of the country. They have to go face the Go Gang attack, as Bob Violence is back on the air. Flagg tells Mandy he left the unconscious Scheiskopf on Warpath One, the main attack route for the Go Gangs. They go to meet them, when they attack. Thoughts: So, Krieger was the video pirate and he was murdered by John Scheiskopf, who was from Plex Internal Affairs. The Plex is bleeding the country dry to fund their operations on Mars and is using Manacillin to sterilize the population, according to Krieger. Scheiskopf was surprised about the subliminals, which means it wasn't Plex doing; so, that mystery remains. Flagg inherits the pirate operation. Chaykin also introduces The Witnesses, geriatric rebels who provide information services and alternate education for the public. Plex education is geared towards combat, making good little drones of the populace. This part is a critique of the modern education system, which was getting bad in the 80s, as arts programs were dropped, due to budgetary constraints. the government was underfunding education, nationally, forcing the problem down to the state level, which became a modus operandi of the Reagan and Bush years (and the Clinto Administration, after), which deliberately underfunded Federal programs that weren't in favor with their constituency, while massively increasing the military budget and law enforcement. They also increased government programs which aided corporations in expanding globally, such as subsidizing Campbell Soups to advertise in Europe, despite talk of the Free Market System. Education was badly funded and the state became overwhelmed and pushed it down to the municipal levels. Schools were closed, due to budget cuts and student dumped on already crowded schools, until they were overwhelmed. Meanwhile, things like Pell Grants and scholarship programs were de-emphasized in favor of Guaranteed Student Loans, in which the Federal government guarantees the lender (the banks) the money lent to the borrower, to attend college. if the student defaults on the loan, the government pays the banks, while the borrower carries the debt and the consequences of it. The bank has no risk. The end result was graduates saddled with debt, from decades, as tuition skyrocketed, at the same time. Meanwhile, the military was heavily promoted as a way to pay for college, without massive debt. That was how I attended college, on an NROTC Scholarship, which paid my tuition, books and fees and provided $100 per month stipend, which was used towards room and board (though didn't begin to cover it). In return, I served 4 years in the US Navy, as an officer. other programs included the Montgomery GI Bill, which provided matching funds for funds put aside, while serving on active duty, in the US military. A servicemember would set up an allotment, which was deducted from their pay and the government matched the amount. The funds could then be used later, for college expenses, though it took a long enlistment to earn enough to pay for most degree programs. The original post-WW2 GI Bill covered far more of college expenses. So, Chaykin is making comment on these factors and extrapolating forward. A large army needs someone to fight and the US was deeply involved in the affairs of Latin American, in the 80s. Flagg extrapolates a Latin America crisis that draws Krieger away and pushes Peg Krieger into CK Blitz's arms, leading to the birth od Medea and the end of Krieger's marriage. It explains why Mandy's mother is a sore spot between them, meanwhile, Krieger and Blitz were the original leaders of the Warlords, but were drafted into the Rangers, when the Plex formed them. Blitz used it to build his political career, while Krieger became the law. They put together the pirate video set-up, to thumb their noses at the Plex, then to counter their aims. The video piracy angle kind of comments on criticisms of television and entertainment, as becoming increasingly violent, sexualized and devoid of anything for the brain. This is a long debate. Chaykin is also commenting on the corporate influence of things, which further inhibit artistic expression within film and tv, not to mention other arts. The Reagan Administration cut funding to the arts, heavily, leading public broadcasting to court more corporate sponsorships and have to resort to fundraising efforts more often, so that annual pledge drives became semi-annual and even quarterly. The National Endowment for the Arts was all but defunded and used to create political attacks by the Right, particularly in relation to gay imagery. On a more satirical angle, Chaykin introduces us to William Windsor Jones, aka William Windsor-Mountbatten, aka Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and second in line for the throne of the united Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. At the time of the series, William was a year old and people still gushed over Diana and considered their marriage to be some kind of fairy tale. Chaykin is a bit too cynical for that, though he doesn't comment. he mostly has fun with the idea that, at some point, The UK became a Communist state and the monarchy was abolished. One presumes that William took refuge, in secret, in the US. He will pop up, from time to time. Chaykin draws him with a vague likeness to Prince Charles and Prince Phillip, emphasizing the Mountbatten features, more than the Windsor/Saxe-Coburg features. He gives him a receding hairline; but nothing like William would have, as an adult. Harry wasn't around yet, so nothing about siblings. Given his history, he could have been aligned with the Gotterdammacrats! Chaykin wraps up the first storyline nicely, with a continuing subplot about the subliminals and the ASLC still hovering about, to carry things forward. The next storyline will take up the subliminals, though the ASLC will still lurk in the background. We will also get some more clues about the fate of Peg Krieger, as the tape says Hilton had no further knowledge of her, when he threw her out. We will also get to see some basketball and meet the star of the Skulkie Skullcrushers, Jules "Deathwish" Fouquet. Before I forget, it may be obvious, but Chaykin has been having fun with character names, with John Scheiskopf. For those who lack a familiarity with German, kopf means head. You can work out the rest for yourself or try Google translate. It's a little juvenile; but, it probably went over the heads of at least half the audience. Then again, I sometimes wondered if some readers understood the origin of the name of the Love Canal Adult Centers. Anyone these days, under the age of 50 probably doesn't. It actually works on a couple of levels. One last thing; Chaykin isn't shy about sex in these stories; but, he also doesn't go nearly as far as he would with Black Kiss. First was not a Code-approved company; but, they also didn't go out of their way to be purely "adult." They had no outright nudity in their books for a long time, before you saw a naked woman, in Jon Sable. usually, the important bits were hidden and more was left to the imagination. Chaykin is more explicit than Grell; but, he suggests more than he shows. The sex scene between Reuben and Mandy just gives you a few racy panels, then lets your mind do the rest, which quite frankly, works better, in my eyes. The trappings are very fetishistic; but, the sexual appetites are pretty honest and above board, rather than the imagery that permeated things like X-Men, with fetishistic trappings and BDSM themes, but no actual sex. if you ask me, Flagg was a healthier book; and, Chaykin sexualized everyone, male and female. Look at Flag's Ranger uniform and you can see that it is designed to be just as sexy as what Mandy wears. hell, the heels of his boots are almost as high as her stilettos! Also, Chaykin is pretty equal with who does what to whom, as the series unfolds.

American Flagg #3... Also, Chaykin is pretty equal with who does what to whom, as the series unfolds. Chaykin seemed pretty open about wanting to handle sex as an integral part of the story/characters in a basically adult (in the original meaning of that word) manner, and not as a tease or cheap thrill (like X-Men). I think he handled it pretty well.

My teenage daughter (of all people) got me watching the tv series Shameless, and although I hadn't thought of the comparison until now, it's very Chaykinesque in a lot of ways. Highly sexualised and extremely cynical, yet at the same time honest and adult about sex in ways that are different from the leering attitude of most shows.

American Flagg #4Creative Team: Howard Chaykin-story & art, Ken Bruzenak-letters, Leslie Zahler-colors, Mike Gold-editor Synopsis: Thursday, November 27, 2031. Thanksgiving. A Soviet weather satellite becomes active, after colliding with some space debris. it was originally designed to disrupt the 1996 US Election, when the unimagined Bill Clinton would defeat Senator Robert Dole. Meanwhile, at the Chicago Plex Mall, a disturbance breaks out, between representatives of the Irish Republican Army and the People's republic of Great Britain, as well as their advisors from the Brazilian Union and Pan-African League. Newly appointed Chief Ranger Reuben Flagg harangues Mayor C Keenan Blitz for a deputy, while Blitz wants Flagg to nursemaid his illegal basketball team on a South American tour. Blitz says it is just Havana and brasilia and coincides with the Arms expo and training exercises, in Brasilia. They are interrupted by the call for Flagg and he borrows Ernie to go see what is up. Ernie deploys riot control while Flagg pries the Pan-African rep off the Brazilian rep, as they exchange racial slurs and other insults. Flagg pistol whips them a bit, as they cry diplomatic immunity, to which Flagg is forced to let them go. He warns them, though, that he will move their kiosks to Gotterdammacrat territory and then take odds on who survives. He says he will see them at dinner. We cut to later, as Fasfax Chicago brings a special broadcast from the home of the mayor, as he hosts Thanksgiving dinner and Chaykin channels Norman Rockwell.... Guests include Reuben, Mandy Krieger, Senhora de La Cristo, Ernesto Klein-Hernandez, Mr Bokasa (Pan-African rep) and the Mayor and Medea Blitz. Mayor Blitz announces that Medea is joining the Plexus Rangers, to Reuben's astonishment. later, Reuben and Mandy discuss the situation, in bed and Mandy shares some of the data that the Witnesses have turned up. The subliminal transmissions in Bob Violence originate in Brasilia, not locally or from the Plex. The next day, Reuben goes to see the mayor about his offer.... He demands that Mandy come along, he gets a deputy when he returns and a shopping spree at the arms fair. Mayor Blitz agrees to everything and then Reuben says hello to Senhora De La cristo, who is on her kees, below the mayor's desk. She says she was discussing a pass into the Chicago ruins and Flagg shuts her down, saying it is Plex jurisdiction and a no-go area. he tells her nice try and leaves. Flagg then goes off to deal with the Saturday Go-Gang attack and leads from the front... (Wakka-Ding-Hoy??) The very front! he single-handedly takes down Cyril, again and then thanks everyone behind the barricades for their support. Later, Mandy begs off the trip and says she can act as temporary Ranger, in Flagg's absence, to keep an eye on De La Cristo and two Plex bureaucrats in her presence and send Bill in her place, as he has the technical expertise to track the subliminal signals. He agrees and the next day, William Windsor Jones joins Reuben Flagg, Medea Blitz and the Skokie Skullcrushers (disguised as priests) at the boarding gate for the Raymond Loewy Designer Liner, with service to Havana and Brasilia, captained by CG Marakova. The team is settled in and sedated with somnambutol, while Medea reveals that she has been passing her tranquilizers to her father and girlfriends. Reuben and Captain Marakova say goodnight to their friends and retire to her cabin, where her uniform is replaced by lingerie and garter belts and stockings. After making Reuben smile, Crystal checks in with the bridge and acknowledges a request for Irish Coffee, by the Officer of the Deck. Crystal heads to the bridge, with Flagg and finds that the request was an attempt to signal a hijacking, by the Provisional Order of the Black Shamrock, a splinter group of the IRA. Flagg claims to be Peter Zarustica, Fourth World Industries Security (owners of the Raymond Loewy). The terrorists claim to have a nuclear device. Flagg and Crystal speak in Russian and he says they aren't Americans, as they don't recognize him from tv. crystal asks if they are Canadian. Reuben disarms their guard and they are observed on the bridge and the Black Sharock leader twiggs to Reuben's identity. Crystal goes to alert Bill and Medea, while Reuben recruits some help, to retake the liner. He wakes up Jules "Deathwish" Fouquet and makes a deal to get the aid of the Skokie Skullcrushers. The leader of the terrorists tries to reason with Crystal, saying she has no choice but to cooperate, to protect her ship. Flagg butts in and agrees and they observe him on the monitors. They go down to take him out, for causing problems and discover that Bill has masqueraded as Flagg, for the monitors, so that Flagg and the Skullcrushers can ambush them, using Nachtmachers. Reuben follows the leader to the bridge, where he shoots an officer and threatens to blow the nuke, unless the engines are restored. Crystal turns up and mows him down with a machine gun, then goes to deactivate the device, which turns out to be a fake. Later, Flagg interrogates the leader, who is dying. he reveals they are Canadian and fakes. They tried to join the Plexus rangers, but were rejected, as they only accept Americans. They tried the ASLC, who said the same. they thought if they nuked London, the ASLC would make an exception. He dies before he can identify the location of the ASLC, though he starts to say "downstate", before he expires. Downstate? Peoria? Danville? Decatur? Centralia? Newton? Cairo? Alton? Help us out, here; it's a big state! Reuben and CG leave and Reuben says he will probably have to make a report to Ambassador Deutsch-Marx, but is told by Crystal that the real authority is his adjutant general, Overholt. reuben responds, surprised, "Ivor Overholt?" Meanwhile, in Brasilia, a couple discusses the terrorists, with inside knowledge of them and the ASLC, mentioning the Peoria Cadre (I knew it! it has to Play , in Peoria!) The man is a Ranger and says they will check out Flagg, when he arrives and kill him, if necessary. Thoughts: Another dense issue, as Chaykin sets up the next storyline, while carrying through the subplots of the subliminal messages in Bob Violence and the mysterious ASLC, not to mention Ester De La Cristo's business of buying the State of Illinois. he dabbles in more media satire, as the mayor's Thanksgiving dinner is covered by Fasfax, with a tabloid on-scene reporter making digs at people, to which Reuben threatens to ran the camera somewhere uncomfortable on the person of Nadine, the "journalist." Someone should introduce him to Fox News and let him loose. We learn that the subliminals are being broadcast from somewhere in Brasilia, where the Ranger Expo will be happening, as well as the Skullcrusher's game. So, lots of figures converging there. meanwhile, we get Canadians, masquerading as IRA terrorists, to impress the ASLC, as Chaykin has fun with future political factions. Canada is a Communist state, in this world, as is Great Britain, while the IRA is being backed by the Brazilians. The an-African Union, which covers Africa and portions of Europe (the Mediterranean states), back the People's Republic of Great Britain. It's all a mishmash of initials and political names, satirizing the various factions that break off from one another, particularly in the 60s, when groups would fall out and split into subgroups, like Arafat and Waddi Haddad falling out and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine splintering off of the PLO. Splitters! The weather satellite is another subplot, but won't pay off until the next storyline. Reuben is getting around quite a bit, as he sleeps with Mandy Krieger and CG Marakova, in this issue, while Bill Jones gets friendly with Medea Blitz, who is off to boot camp, for the Plexus Rangers. He also implies sexual favors from Ester De La Cristo, to get Mayor Blitz to sign off on a trip into the Chicago ruins. And this was before Bill Clinton! Again, sex is part and parcel to things, as are politics, though more in the form of political corruption and extremism. Reuben acts as a sort of center to things, as he isn't above a bit of corruption, but he legitimately believes in the ideals of American political philosophy. He is too much of a realist to believe things work that way; but, he tries for something better than the status quo. That seems to reflect Chaykin's own politics, as he is a self-described Lefty, who is cynical enough to know how politicians use words to cover corruption and screw over constituents, at the right price. he also uses this to satirize the trend of privatization that exploded in the Reagan & Thatcher 80s, as conglomerates grew in power, while the income gap grew. Government services were made more and more inefficient, through underfunding, then the management of those fields was sold off to private firms, who claimed to be able to run things more efficiently and at lower cost. Anyone who saw their water and power handed over to private entities can tell you how much their utility bills decreased, after they were privatized. The ASLC represents the political extremism of the period, which was centered around nuclear holocaust, as survivalists prepared for a post-nuclear exchange world. The fall of the Soviet Union disrupted that, and attention then turned to other conspiracies, as the survivalist movements morphed into the militia movement and similar extremist and conspiracy-minded groups. The ASLC rhetoric speaks of some kind of British and Italian conspiracy (replacing Communist conspiracy, as the UK and Italy seem to be Communist states, in this future, or at least socialist) and the Plex represents the idea of a repressive US government. They are also anti-Zionist, which more often means anti-semitic, rather than opposing Israel's expansion into occupied territories. As we will see, anti-semitism factors into a lot of Flagg's world, which is understandable, from Lefty Jewish creator. Chaykin pulls no punches in his dialogue, during the political fights, as racial slurs are bandied about willy-nilly. This is an adult comic in every sense of the word, rather than titilation, hiding behind profanity and nudity, with juvenile focus of so many other "adult comics." Chaykin treats bigotry as casually as sex, though never naively. He exposes these people for what they are while also delivering the message that sex is pleasurable, between consenting adults and that there is nothing wrong with a bit of costuming or adventurous play, so long as everyone is in agreement and safe. He also isn't afraid of violence, but, he is never really gratuitous about it. We may see blood splatter, but we don't see chunks of meat flying off or piles of gore on the ground. Flagg dances around in an R-rated world, with PG-13 dialogue, but never wallows in X theatricality. Jules Fouquet makes his on-panel debut and he is an impressive figure, physically, but will grow as a character, as the Skullcrushers become staunch allies for Reuben. Chaykin's depiction of the team and Black Market Basketball is a mixture of the NBA and professional wrestling, which would get me to watch it more. Pro sports are about entertainment and showmanship as much as worked sports; it's just the proportions that are different. So, we are immersed in the mystery of who is behind the subliminals, since it doesn't seem to be part of the Plex program. That will be the maguffin that drives these three issues and we will pick it up next time, as the Raymond Loewy arrives in Havana and Flagg meets another character, who will stick around a while. ps The Raymond Loewy Designer Liner is an airship, as Chaykin revisits the era of global airship travel, which died with the Hindenburg. Chaykin's design is more stylized. The name references industrial designer Raymond Loewy, who designed streamlined locomotives, for the Pennsylvania Railway, Studebaker's logos and body stylings, the Air Force One livery, consulted on Skylab design, and tractors for International harvester and Allis-Chalmers. He was one of the key designers in the Streamlined movement, in the 1920s and 30s, along with Norman Bel Geddes. Bel Geddes will be referenced for a future Fourth World Industries Designer Liner airship. he was the designer of the Futurama exhibit, at the 1939 World's Fair and the author of the book Horizons, which was filled with concepts, including a transatlantic flying wing aircraft, a streamlined luxury liner ship, and various other designs.

American Flagg #5Boy, you can say one thing about this series; Chaykin knew how to grab attention with a cover! Creative Team: Howard Chaykin-story & art, Ken Bruzenak-letters, Leslie Zahler-colors, Mike Gold-editor Synopsis: Fasfax recaps the events of last issue as Reuben sends Medea on to her Ranger indoctrination, in Brasilia and Bill to start tracking the subliminal signal. Meanwhile, the Ricardos look on.... Fred and Ethel must be at the newsstand. Reuben and the Skullcrushers catch their ride to their hotel, before their game, while Crystal goes off to file her report with Fourth World Industries, about the hijacking. Reuben sees the masses of humanity, on the streets of Havana, plus the various signs about how New York ball teams should go home. They arrive at the Rectory of St Beryl the Leper (which, we are told, is a front for Blitz Corp) and Reuben tells the driver he wants to take a walk and the man points to a giant billboard of Reuben, as Mark Thrust, Sexus Ranger and warns him that half the population would kill him for perpetuating Yankee Imperialism and the other half would tear him apart in lust. Reuben is still not content to stay in a hotel room, so he dons a disguise to go out. He gets into a rickshaw and asks to be taken to the "lowlife district." The cabbie takes him to the Yanqui Strip, at the corner of Benjamin Siegel Blvd and United Fruit Ave. Reuben is in heaven.... The ladies then proceed to attack Reuben, but he is rescued by Ned Beaumont, Hotel Roland Security, who gives him his card, as he helps Reuben up, then runs off. Reuben reads the card, which says "Tom Slick Investments," and discovers his wallet is gone! Reuben goes on to the game, at the Bonnano Dome, where the Skullcrushers are destroying the locals, with a halftime score of 96 to 37, which Jules "Deathwish" Foucquet attributes to Reuben getting them real meat, not processed crap. They go out for the second half and find the opposing team carrying jai alai cesteras, with claw teeth. Tiny goes to the ref to protests, who claims "No habla ingles," and Tiny send the guy flying. Problem is, he is the mayor of Havana and a riot breaks out. The team gets behind blast doors, in the arena and Reuben tries to escape through the crowd, but it is total chaos. He tries flashing his Ranger badge; but, that just eggs the crowd on. Reuben fights, but the numbers are against him, when his savior turns up again. He learns his real name is Sam Louis Obispo (uh-huh....). Sam helps him to escape and invites him to hide out at his place, where his rich main squeeze is waiting, with a blond friend. They go inside and Reuben, aka Pete Zarustica, meets "Mistress Veronika" (the Sugar Momma) and "Mistress Bettina" (the blond), who are into dominance and we are treated with a visual display of zoftig pulchritude and leather couture. Why Mistress Veronika chains up Sam, and straps on his ballgag, Mistress Bettina tells "Pete" to "clean a path across the floor" with his tongue. "Pete" says he is too tired for this and Bett sticks her whip handle in his face and "Pete" has had enough and knocks Bett out, cold. Veronika applauds. Reuben is back aboard the Raymond Loewy, the next day, as it transits to Brasilia. Upon arrival, Reuben checks into his hotel, in the El Dorado Plex Mall and also with Bill. he tells him the signal originates within the city limits, but hasn't pinpointed the source. Flagg dons his uniform and heads to the expo for Ranger Assembly. He runs into Chief Ranger Emmett Golem, the former technical advisor on Mark Thrust. He introduces him to Pelham Riverdale, Chief Ranger at New Orleans Plex Mall, and his deputy, Arcadia Driftwood.... Golem then brings him to the Adjutant General, Ivor Overholt, an ex-tormentor of Flagg's, from his youth. Ivor and his bigger sycophants used to harass and haze Reuben, which the Plex gave a pass, to, especially since Reuben was Jewish. Reuben dropped out of flight school, as a result. Overholt is still a p#$%& to Reuben, then tells the group that there is an anti-Plex demonstration at the spaceport, where the Mars delegation is due to land and wants the assembled Rangers to make a show of force and drive them off. The Rangers assemble in riot gear and Reuben shares Go Gang troubles with other Rangers and learns that they all have the same problem, except New Orleans, after Riverdale took charge.... The Rangers form a skirmish line, fire Nachtmachers, arm Kruncheons, and take it to the protesters, in standard fascist fashion.... Flagg runs across Sam Louis Obispo, who came down with Bettina and Veronika, to work the crowd. Flagg gives him an escape route and then they mop up the crowd. Flagg is disgusted with the sight of the aftermath and is filled with self-loathing. Later, Crystal dresses for a recpetion, to which Flagg was snubbed, by Overholt, but CG is taking him as her escort. He checks in with Bill, who tells him the signal is coming from inside El Dorado Plex Mall. He also notices a flutter in the transmission and says they are being bugged and switches to Russian. he warns Flagg to watch his back. Bill then sends a signal through the carrier wave that fries the surveillance gear of our eavesdropper, who is a ranger. We see a photo in his wallet, which says "Love, Peg." At the reception, Flagg and CG get caught trying to party in an office and then go back to themain reception, where they find Medea, with her new Ranger trainee haircut and a waiter's uniform, as recruits get the menial tasks. She is horrified and Daddy can't help her. Reuben meets Ambassador Roger Deutsch-Marx, who introduces him to his daughter, Desiree Deutsch-Marx Overholt, aka "Mistress Veronika." They separate for a private chat and Mistress Veronika wants to party and Flagg tells her no way, and especially not with the wife of a man who would see him dead. She says Ivor hasn't touched her in years, but Reuben refuses and smirks, to which she threatens to wipe off his face. They part and Reuben gets back to the main do, just in time to hear the announcement of a planned raid on an illegal basketball game. Reuben borrows CG's car and meets with Sam, to try to save his career and warn the team. Meanwhile, our mystery couple meets with a co-conspirator, who is also wearing Ranger dress uniform and has been in contact with the ASLC, in Peoria, who he says is ready to move aboveground, at Christmas. The man is Chief Ranger Pelham Riverdale, of New Orleans. Thoughts: Hot time in Havana! Chaykin goes nuts with references to Bugsy Siegel, United Fruit Company, Joseph Bonnano, Fulgencio Batista and the history of Havana and the Mafia and organized Corporate Crime. Somehow he left out Meyer Lanskey! We are kind of led to believe that the Communist Government of Cuba fell, at some point and the Mafia returned, in full force. We also learn that Mark Thrust was a big hit in Latin America and Flagg is well known. We also learn that Lucy and Ricky were visiting relatives, again. No sign of Little Ricky. Chaykin also makes some points about the growing trend, at the time, of using riot police to break up peaceful demonstrations, by conservative governments, such as used by the Thatcher Government during the Miners' Strike and in our own recent past. Chaykin makes very clear his feelings on the subject, as Reuben hates what they are doing. The Plex is the stand in for fascist oppression, in the form of a certified Nazi, in Ivor Overholt. Chaykin doesn't sugarcoat the antisemitism, either, using ethnic slurs, as well as swastikas. We can see a glimpse of why Reuben has little loyalty to Mars or the Plex, as an organization. Sam Louis Obispo makes his sensational debut and Chaykin gives us another great character, a con artist and thief, with a heart of gold (or at least pyrite). Then he adds Desiree Deutsch-Marx Overholt, who isn't done with things, either. Chaykin has fun with names, turning Betty and Veronika into German dominatrices. Once again, Chaykin isn't shy about sex and fetishism; and, as we see in quick images, has the males on the receiving end of the chains and gags. Fetshism and BDSM imagery have long been a part of Chaykin's original work (as opposed to his stuff like Star Wars or Batman) and he has also contributed art to adult magazines. At one point in The Art of Howard Chaykin, he remarks that he would have been quite contented drawing bondage comics for men's magazines, had comic books not provided a career. He is honest, in his use than things like the old Fiction House covers, which were awash with bondage and damsels in distress, or Martin Goodman's "sweats" magazines, with their images of Nazi war criminals torturing buxom maidens, while bare chested GI's fire machine guns at them. Chakin knows sex sells; but, he at least gives honest sex and gives it a bit of style. Throughout this series, Chaykin flexes a design muscle, as he mixes fashions of the 40s and early 50s with the technology of tomorrow, giving a rather lived in feel that would match future things, like babylon 5, which did similar things in its costuming. Chaykin gives Ken Bruzenak a chance to go nuts, in this issue, as it is lousy with logos and typography, from neon signs to street signs, Ranger battle cries and sound effects. Flagg always felt like it had a soundtrack that mixed jazz with synth, bathed in a neon glow and a staging that Ridley Scott would approve. So, we know there is some kind fo connection between the subliminals and the ASLC, via the mystery couple and their allies; and, that the attacks aren't just happening in Chicago. Someone is sowing chaos into the Plex Malls. Usually, that kind of thing is in advance of bringing an authoritative state. Look at Weimar Germany, where street battles between the Nazis, the Communists and the Social democrats created untold violence and mayhem, leading to harsher and harsher response, until the 1929 Stock Market Crash launched the Great depression, which fueled further hate and anger. The Nazis came to the forefront, preaching a return to greatness for Germany, while re-establishing order and driving out those they labeled as the cause of the unrest and economic chaos, which just happened to include anyone who opposed their policies. There is much of American Flagg that resembles Weimar Germany and further reflects much of recent history. The 80s were a period where fascism seemed on the rise again, as repressive governments were allied with the US, labor movements found themselves under attack, Communism was the big boogey man, and authoritarian leaders abounded, in East and West. If American Flagg seems prescient, it is because it was commenting on the times and history tends to repeat itself, since no one seems to listen to Santayana. Or Billy Joel..... Meanwhile, Chaykin has some fun with the Riverdale gang, between Chief Ranger Riverdale, Bettina and Veronica, though, sadly, no Jughead. The name Ironwolf gets name dropped and we will see more of it, next issue, as Chaykin references his own work. We will also see more about that photo, from "Peg," in our Ranger co-conspirator's wallet.

American Flagg #6Creative Team: Howard Chaykin-story & art, Ken Bruzenak-letters, Leslie Zahler-colors, Mike Gold-editor Synopsis: We first see that the activated Soviet satellite is wreaking havoc with the weather around the Chicago Plex Mall. We also see that Raul has carried out a time-honored male tradition.... We are reminded that Plexus Rangers are about to make a raid on an illegal basketball game, in Brasilia, with Reuben Flagg stuck in the middle, as part of the raiding force and secretly the chaperone for the team. Time for some fancy footwork! Reuben and Ranger cadet Medea Blitz are assigned command of a cadet cadre, which is being heloed to the arena. Medea is griping up a storm about the Rangers, saying Daddy would get her out, if he knew. Who do you think put ya' there, toots? You were a political liability for Daddy and it was a way to save face! Reuben is preoccupied with the raid, hoping Sam Louis Obispo makes it in time. We cut to the arena, where sam is ticking off Jules "Deathwish" Foucquet, The King of the Two-Finger Lobotomy! Meanwhile, at the hotel where our mystery couple are holed up, someone tries to make a move on the hot blonde and we learn who her Ranger lover is.... Chief Ranger Golem! The Rangers land on top of the arena, then rappel over the side. Sam and the Skullcrushers exit on cue, wearing their priest disguises, stopping only to rob the box office. Reuben and the Rangers enter and subdue members of the crowd. Flagg tries to sneak off to meet Sam; but someone follows, in the shadows. Sam reaches the man before he can shoot Reuben in the back. The shooter ends up dead and it turns out to be Pelham Riverdale. Flagg checks his uniform and finds a membership card for the ASLC. This makes no sense to Flagg, as the ASLC is reactionary and racist, and Riverdale is black. Sam gives Reuben a gift to show Desiree Deutsch-Marx Overholt, if she causes trouble: footage of her starring role in a porno. Later, Reuben reports to Chief Ranger Golem and lays on the BS. Then he notices a picture of Peg Krieger on his desk and asks about it, but is told to F off. Flagg asks Arcadia Driftwood about Riverdale and she says he treated her as an intellectual inferior. They run into Adjutant General Overholt and Flagg passes on a gift to her, though Ivor is nasty about Flagg interrupting him. Flagg brushes it off. Later, Bill confirms that the subliminal signals emanate from the Ranger station, which means Chief Ranger Golem is at the heart of it, which Flagg was starting to suspect. Flagg is still confused, as Golem is a Jew and Riverdale black, yet the ASLC considers both to be inferiors and the enemy. Bill tells him it is "identification with the aggressor." At the hotel, the hot blond speaks to Golem, on the phone and seems to confirm that she is Peg Krieger, as she mentions telling him not to keep the photo on his desk. She says that she is taking care of Arcadia Driftwood, as she let slip about the Go- Gang in New Orleans disappearing after Riverdale took command and then says she spoke to decker, the ASLC rep in Peoria, stating they have joined with the Posse Commitatus. They want Reuben as an agent of radical zionism and they want him dead, so he can't deny it. Flagg and Driftwood have been tasked with demonstrating aerial marketing procedures, while other Rangers get to have fun at the Firefight Special. Suddenly, an Ironwolf gunship alters course and begins strafing them. Flagg tries some evasive maneuvers and clips a target blimp, causing it to collide with the gunship. It is crippled, but the pilot is able to steer it to a safe landing. The pilot gets out and runs and Flagg identifies her as Peg Krieger. He pursues, in their helicopter. He marks her with a dye round, so he can trace her, through the crowds. He brings the helo to roof level and tells Driftwood to take over, so he can pursue Peg Krieger. Flagg crashes into a nightclub, called "Bichas," then recalls what that means, as he is attacked by drag queens, who happen to be fans of Mark Thrust. Reuben fights his way free and follows Peg, but gets kicked in the face by her and tells the others that he isn't a cop, just a thrillseeker. They dogpile on Flagg and Peg gets away. Flagg kicks a field goal, between an attackers legs and gets out, but can't get to Peg, because people are shooting at him. He kicks a crate of seltzer bottles, which collides with the back of her ehad and she goes flying head-first down the flight of stairs, landing at Arcadia Driftwood's feet. Flagg deploys Somnambutol and quells the drag queens, then sees what Arcadia has discovered.... "Peg Krieger," is actually Ivor Overholt, in drag! Arcadia informs him that Ivor was "All boy, but every inch a lady..." She says she found a key, to a hotel room at the Wyatt Remuda. Chief Ranger Golem turns up at the room and finds Flagg waiting for him, telling him Ivor is dead and the game is up. Arcadia disarms him and he sits down and tells Flagg the truth... He and Peg Krieger had a wild affair, when he was Chief Ranger of the New Orleans Plex Mall. She was killed in an accident, near a combat zone. Golem was obsessed with her and opened up to Ivor, during a night drinking session. Ivor then appeared before Golem, surgically altered to be the twin of Peg Krieger. Flagg posits that Golem was seduced by the ASLC, but Golem says they are the only hope for the future and he wanted to recruit Flagg for the group. Ivor said he wasn't the type and was right. Flagg remarks about the teenage girl who killed herself, while spouting crazed rants about "Italo-Brit zionists." Golem pulls out a hold-out piece and shoots himself in the head, while Flagg is distracted. We wrap up with a Fasfax report about the deaths of Golem, Riverdale and Overholt and their conenction to the ASLC and the subliminals, designed to create social disruption so that they could swoop in and exploit the chaos, while weakening the Plex. Meanwhile, in Peoria, a convoy heads northeast, on snow covered roads. Decker says they will square the deal with Flagg and orders a call made to someone named Titania Weiss. In Brasilia, Flagg makes his goodbyes to Ranger Driftwood, then gets an angry send off from Desiree Deutsch-Marx Overholt, looking for Sam. Reuben says goodbye as she notices Arcadia and asks if she is into anything "unusual." When the Raymond Loewy reaches Chicago, the passengers are forced to disembark away from the airport and take a train into the Plex Mall, due to the weather. They load the new Ironwolf gunship and a battle van onto the train, but there is a third mystery crate, which CK prepaid for. They also find Sam, who stowed away on the airship, after Desiree firebombed his hotel. he decided to visit the old home country and Reuben welcomes him to Chicago. Thoughts: Whooo, boy; this one is all over the place. We get an attempted murder on Flagg, during the raid and, again, during the expo. Chief Ranger Golem turns out to be with the ASLC and is behind the subliminals that enrage the Go Gangs, at the various American Plex Malls. Their aim was to destabilize things to then bring in the ASLC as the fascist saviors, much like the Nazi reign of terror which led to them getting voted into the Reichstag and Hitler made chancellor, under President Paul Von Hindenburg, until his death, when Hitler assumed total authority. We can also make comparisons to certain recent events and the aims of extremist Right Wing groups, nearly 40 years after this was published. Chaykin is playing several tropes from crime fiction, as Chief Ranger Golem's corruption matches many a noir story, where the weakness of a man is his undoing, usually involving an obsessive relationship. It is at the center of James M Cain's writing, such as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity. In both cases, weak men are manipulated by a femme fatale into committing murder, to free the women from some marital prison. here, Ivor uses the image of Peg Krieger to manipulate Everett Golem into joining with the ASLC and destabilizing the Plex Malls. However, Golem is a willing accomplice, as is Riverdale, as they see the corruption within the Plex. However, they turn a blind eye to the lunacy and corruption at the center of the ASLC, probably hoping to use their thuggery to bring down the Plex, then restore order and forcing the ASLC to do their bidding. The gender bending elements, both Ivor and the drag queens that attack Flagg, are rather troubling, even in 1983. The 80s weren't exactly the most progressive period for LBGT rights, though it was a decade of evolution within the fight for gay rights. Stonewall touched things off, in 1969, and the Civil Rights Movement showed the way for many minority groups. However, the 70s were still a repressive time for the LBGT community, even as some media properties helped shine a positive light on things, as The Rocky Horror Picture Show became a sort of metaphor for groups who felt like outsiders from the "straight" community (meaning mainstream, not necessarily heterosexual). The murder of openly gay San Francisco Assemblyman Harvey Milk was another touchstone; but, the hysteria over the HIV/AIDS Crisis became a real driving force to get many to start challenging society. More and more prominent people came out publicly and more and more groups openly advocated for gay rights; but, it was a long road. While I served in the Navy, homosexuality was classified as a violation of the uniform Code of Military Justice and was grounds for immediate expulsion from the service. In 1992, hearings were held and those ideas were challenged in Washington, ultimately leading to the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy, under the Clinto Administration, which eventually evolved into gays being allowed to openly serve in the US military. But, in 1983, a certain large segment of the population thought it was okay to perpetuate negative stereotypes. Chaykin is using these stereotypes, though he dances around the subject by saying that Golem's obsession with Peg Krieger was at the heart of his affair with Ivor. Ivor and Desiree were both sexually adventurous, with different aims. This kind of thing is not uncommon in crime fiction, particularly the more pulpish stuff. However, it trades in those negative pulpy stereotypes. Unlike Jon Sable, we do not get a positive gay or trans character. To be fair to Chaykin, I doubt the market was ready for such a thing, at least a trans one, compared to a gay figure, like Grey. However, you don't know, if you don't try. That said, I don't think that kind of activism has ever been on Chaykin's agenda and his work has shown little interest along those lines, possibly the opposite. It's funny, though, that Mike Grell might be considered a bit more politically conservative than Howard Chaykin, though that shows the danger of labels. In my experience, people can hold views that can be equally conservative and liberal, depending on the subject. So, the subplot about the subliminals is resolved, but the ASLC subplot continues and seems to be right up front. There is also the weather situation. This is our setting for our next 3 issues. Meanwhile, we have learned about the fate of Peg Krieger. Will Flagg share that with Mandy?

American Flagg #7Well, ah remember the Winter of '32; snow was so deep we had to swim through it to get our comic books! That was the Winter of '28. Winter of '32 was when the avalanche covered the printing plant and we had to dig it out, print the comics and use dog sleds to distribute them. Naw, that was the Winter of '47. Winter of '32 was when the Earth was frozen and Lemminkainen has to defeat the evil witch Louhi to release his comics. And you try and tell the young people of today that, and they won't believe you! Creative Team: Howard Chaykin-story & art, Ken Bruzenak-letters, Leslie Zahler-colors, Mike Gold-editor Synopsis: It's Christmas Eve, 2031 and the weather has gotten worse. Average snowfall has been 28 inches, every other night, for a month! The population has been forced to seek shelter away from the destroyed homes. A mass of people floods in from the suburbs and urban areas, to the Chicago Plex Mall. Some people are less than glad to see their fellow man and tensions start to run high. meanwhile, Gretchen Holstrum and Ernesto Klein-Hernandez have grown beyond mere sexual partners and are actually in love with one another. he keeps Ester De La Cristo waiting and she berates him when he turns up, with Gretchen. Their purchase of the Midwest has hit a snag and she needs Flagg's permission to go into the Chicago urban zone. Meanwhile, Mandy and the passing Gretchen stare daggers at each other. Ester spots Mandsy and lays it on thick in hopes of getting Mandy's help to persuade Reube. They go to the Ranger station, but only Raul is there, trying out the new mechanical hands that Mandy had designed and built for him... Flagg is out dealing with a hikjacked food truck, along with his new deputy, Luther ironheart.... Mayor Blitz tricked Flagg and stuck him with a demented robot deputy, with a holographic head, instead of state of the art equipment. They go down and break up the hijacking, but Luther is a bit over-zealous and Flagg berates him, reminding him that these people are desperate and hungry, not criminals. Reuben heads out to make a stop at the pirate station, which is having interruptions in broadcasting. he makes a stop at a diner and fixes the owner some spaghetti Fritatta (with the recipe provided by Chaykin), and meets Dr Titania Weis. The greetings are interrupted by gunshots and Flagg finds a displaced family, one of whom was shot by a hitchhiker. he tries to make off with their vehicle and Flagg chases him down and subdues him, but is attacked by a mob of displaced people. Titania runs them off after firing her weapon in the air and tells Flagg to forget it. She needs his help for emergency surgery. Flagg assists, while fighting the urge to puke. The patient pulls through and Dr Weis asks Flagg to take schematics for a prosthetic to the Mall, to Jerry Rigg tm to be fabricated. Flagg agrees and they say goodbye. As they part, Dr Weis receives a call from Decker, from the Peoria HQ of the ASLC, talking about a non-aggression pack between her poli-club and the ASLC.... The designs she sent with Flagg were for them and Decker is amused by the idea of Flagg delivering it. Meanwhile, Flagg arrives at Q-USA, to find a recorded tape of Hilton Krieger playing, because the station has been offline for too long. Flagg meets up with Mandy and Raul on New Year's Eve. She asks if he is going to the big party, but his hopes are dashed when she says she is going with Sam Luis Obispo and Crystal has air traffic duty. Mayor Blitz turns up and says medea is coming in on the Bel Geddes airship, while Flagg berates him for sticking him with a factory second robot deputy and pocketing the difference. ester De La Cristo turns up, with a bottle of pre-Collapse Black Label scotch, to try to bribe Flagg into letting her go into Chicago. he lets the bottle crash on the floor and storms off, with Raul following. Reuben eats alone, while the party rages at the Love Canal, when titania Weis comes in and greets him. She is dressed for the party and takes him along and they have a good time. Elsewhere, the captain of the Bel Geddes announces clear skies, so they are headed straight to the airport. At the Mall, Crystal gets a weather warning of a heavy storm approaching and tries to raise the Bel Geddes. Reuben and Titania leave the party and go back to Reuben's apartment, for a bit of horizontal mambo, when Flagg discovers a shocking thing about Titania... Weis is a member of the North Side SS, part of the Gotterdamacrat poli-club. Her grandfather had been part of Jews for Jesus and Flagg is disgusted by the sight of it and angry. Weis thinks it gives an edge and chides Flagg into going back to what they had started and he rips off the swastika necklace, before engaging in rather animalistic sex. Raul calls him about a coupe of Go Gang punks who crashed a Disper party and molested some girls, who Luther threw in the clink; but, the fight spilled over into the Love Canal and one of the Dispers has a gun and is holding Mayor Blitz hostage, wanting the two perps for justice. reuben arrives and jumps the guy from behind, with buzzknucks and nearly goes head first into the ground below. The man is arrested and hauled off, by Luther. The man took out Bert and Ernie and CK sugegsts making Luther his bodyguard and Medea Flagg's deputy, which thrills Flagg. Crystal runs in and informs Flagg that the Bel Geddes went down in the storm, with no response in the last 3 hours, after the captain decided to bypass the rail terminal and come into the city. Thoughts: Chaykin is following his three act structure for storylines, with this issue setting things up , introducing characters, while continuing subplots. The weather has created total chaos and refugees from the storms are pouring into the Plex Mall. Residents are starting to resent their presence and fights start happening, as well as crimes, in desperation. The situation is much like the 1930s, when people from the Dustbowl region of Oklahoma were forced to uproot and look for a better life, bringing them into contact with locals in new areas, who resented new competition for the few paying jobs. Similarly, in other cities, chanty towns sprung up, called Hoovervilles, with displaced people. Again, there were clashes between city residents and the people in the encampments, often with local government sanction, as the Hoovervilels were often sites of political activism, particularly socialist and communist. Much of this is at the heart of John Steinbeck's seminal novel, The Grapes of Wrath. we see modern trappings of it today, as cities have seen homeless populations grow and people who can't afford housing prices end up in tent cities, clashing with local authorities. Meanwhile, the ASLC subplot continues and we meet Titania Weis, mentioned by name in the previous issue, by the unseen Decker, as the ASLC convoy moved out from Peoria. Weis is a Jewish doctor, yet is a member of a neo-Nazi group, the Gotetrdamacrats. his is not unheard of, as it is referred to as "identification with the oppressor." People become so abused that they start to see their oppressors as strong and their own people as weak, and decide to side with their oppressors. In the concentration camps, Kapos were inmates who were given privileges, in exchange for keeping order in the camp. They often joined their abusers in heaping out the abuse, to aid their own survival. This is some complex and mature stuff that Chaykin is playing at, showing how fascist groups sow dissent and use crises for their own gains and how humanity can be twisted away from helping their fellow man. Meanwhile, Chaykin continues to handle sex in a frank and truly adult fashion, without real nudity or need to show the mechanics. Gretchen and ernesto demonstrate a mature and truly loving couple, with a healthy enjoyment of sex, regardless of the cracks that Ester makes about Gretchen and Ernesto playing "French Roulette." Flagg engages in no less frank, if not mature sex, after acting aggressively with Dr Weis, after discovering the swastika and her Nazi affiliation. Reuben is disgusted with himself, afterward. That part is a mature response and is part of why this never really descends into pornography, despite what Psychology Today branded the series. Raul gets a little more screen time and gets new hands, which give him human dexterity, to add to his ability to communicate and higher reasoning. Mandy designed them, continuing the element of her technical skill. Luther Iron heart is a new comic relief character, as he is a malfunctioning combat robot, dumped on Flagg. Chaykin will have a lot of fun with him and he and Raul become a sort of double act. So, we have the mystery of what Titania Weis was having fabricated, for the ASLC and what their scheme is. We have subplots of Ester De La Cristo still trying to get into Chicago, as part of her plan to purchase Illinois, for Fourth World Industries. The pirate tv station is in disarray and failing. Clashes between Plex mall citizens and displaced people are getting worse. Medea was aboard the downed airship, with whom there has been no contact and a rescue party is going to have a rough time reaching them. Lots of things to propel us into the next issue.
