I picked up an old Fleetway collection of Garth Ennis and John McCrea's Troubled Souls at my LCS for $3. It's one of those books I've heard about over the years, but never actually had a chance to read. Despite it being Ennis' first work in the medium, it's actually a very powerful story confidently told, and I'd rate it among his best work. McCrea's fully painted art is something to see, too-- if you only know his more cartoony work from Hitman, it's going to be an eye opener along the lines of what British painters like Colin McNeil and Sean Phillips were doing at the time. I'm not sure why this has never been reprinted-- Crisis was a creator-owned title. I can't imagine that Ennis is embarassed by the work as he has allowed the fare less impressive True Faith to be collected. Perhaps it's because Dougie and Ivor from Dicks first appear in Troubled Souls, but TS is a far more serious work.

We did a store appearance today at a comic shop as prt of the town's Street Fair. As part of the festivities, all back issues were 30% off, so I picked up a few issues... Conan #25, giving me 25 up in floppies and 1-up in one from or another (it was the only issue I didn't have in reprint or original). I still need a handful between #5 and #24 to complete the run in original form. Doc Savage magazine #1 and a pair of Dell Tarzan issues... #110 and... #114. Great pick ups Antione & Roquefort Raider. Looks like you both have some fun reading ahead of you. -M

I feel as giddy as the kid I was in the early 80s, when we'd go visit my grandma in the big city (Montreal) where there were American comics for sale at all news outlets! Here's what I picked up today from what was essentially a garage sale!!! (Okay, I had to drive 45 minutes each way, but it was definitely worth it). Despite the photo's low quality, we can distinguish Creeper #2 and 6, the Adventure comics with the origin of Black Orchid, a Batman family book wirth Michael Golden art, an issue of Rima, another Adventure with Phantom Stranger, and plenty of goodies from Marvel (including the Shanna issue with the Steranko cover). Then there was a whole bunch of #1 from Atlas, uncluding the two IronJaw first issues. And of course plenty of Dell goodies and two cool Charltons. But that's not all! As long as there's a dollar left in my wallet, I have no reason to stop! Three early issues of Astonishing tales, Spider-Woman #1, two more Marvel Premiere issues (love that title!) and teo Master of Kung Fu I hadn't read. Plus a Hulk issue drawn by Herb Trimpe. This is BLISS! BLISS, I tell you!!! Were some of these comics you'd read back in the day and lost since? I see quite a few nostalgic favourites of my own in there: the Creepers (Ditko!), the Swamp Thing (Redondo era?), the Astonishing Tales (BWS on Ka-Zar & Wally Wood on Dr. Doom!), the Gene Day era MoKF, & the excellent Chaykin Marvel Premiere. As someone else already said, Fantastic haul! I only hope you didn't have to put too many villagers to the sword or burn down too many monasteries to get away with your booty. But what's a Cimmerian to do when he's on a raid?

Yes, berk, it was something of a nostalgia trip to see all these books in the same box. Because there was something of a supply problem in those days (as in "practically no comics where I lived"), my familiarity with those runs either came from French reprints (under the highly satisfying Artima imprint) or from single issues picked up over later decades. Naturally, that left many holes to fill!
The BWS Ka-Zar is an added bonus: I didn't dare hope that Astonishing Tales #4 would be one of his issues. (I recently checked how much they would cost at Nostalgiazone and Newkadia, but that was too much for me).
That's what comics used to represent: a lot of fun and wonder for very little money. I'm glad I could experience that feeling again, even for just one day!

His attitude towards it is essentially he doesn't think much of it, but that it ultimately "did the job" re: getting him noticed (such as the TS collection getting a lauditory quote from Alan Moore; then getting on Archie Goodwin's desk, thus leading him & McCrea to the states). Neat find, though I've not read it myself.

Neat find, though I've not read it myself. I find that odd, considering it's actually much stronger than True Faith and For a Few Troubles More, which they restructured into Dicks. (The first four issues of Dicks are just For a Few Troubles fleshed out a bit more. I'd consider Dicks as lesser to Troubled Souls as well.)
(I went back to the store and found the Fleetway collection of For a Few Troubles More for $1 yesterday.)

I'm not sure why, but I just bought 11 volumes of Usagi Yojimbo in tpb form. I say I'm not sure why, because I am also buying them all as individual issues, so I don't really need the collections. But I couldn't pass it up - it was $20 for all 11 volumes shipped. Too good a deal to pass up. I guess someone is going to be getting some Usagi Yojimbo from me for Christmas this year.
