I thought you disliked Longshot, Scott? I do. However, I bought the original LS off the stands when it came out, so there's some nostalgia at play, and it has Art Adams art in it. I didn't really start disliking Longshot until he re-appeared in the pages of X-Men. If they had just left him alone after the LS ended, he would have been fine. If you haven't read this LS, by the way, it's almost incomprehensible. But the art is really interesting - not as sharp as Adams would be later that year in the New Mutants Special, but a very interesting early version. You can see his art get better from one issue to the next. And you can almost imagine Todd McFarlane reading this series and the light bulb going off over his head as he realized he had just discovered his new art style.

Agreed.
The LS was good and after that I haven't cared for the character.

Had time to do some comic hunting yesterday and came across a sweet little honeyhole off the beaten path. The owner of this shop used to own what was probably the second-most well-known LCS in Pittsburgh back in the late '80s/early '90s, but he moved away from the mainstream and opened up a store that caters more to alternative/small press books after closing his previous store. It was in one neighborhood for about a decade, then moved to a new location in the mid-2000s; I was at the previous one once and had seen him at a few conventions in the area, but this was my first time to the new store.
Even though he is focused on alternate publishers, he has a decent selection of Marvel and DC Bronze and Silver Age books, of which I bought:
Those six books, plus Incredible Hulk #341 and #344 and Marvel Team-Up #74 (the SNL issue) and #85, for a grand total of $40. There is nothing less than Fine (DD #87 and Hulk #147), with the FF #120 and Hulk #148 at F+, and the Hulk #183, Hulk #194, and the four in the preceding sentence being VF- or VF.

An LCS had a July 4th sale this weekend, and I picked up a few books in very nice condition, including one of Superman's most disturbing covers (no, I'm not talking about the wedding one, although I can see how some might find that disturbing).

A shop in Massachusetts, Scott? If so, where about? Both shops are in Framingham, or thereabouts. The shop with the better stuff is Bedrock Comics, on 9 West. The new shop, which also has nice stuff, is called Hall of Heroes (or something like that) and is also on 9 West, about 4 miles further west from Bedrock. Bedrock has bins and bins of stuff at 50 cents and $1 - good stuff - as well as at least one long box of older stuff at $3 each. Hall of Heroes also has a lot of $1 boxes, though the stuff is slightly newer. Deals can be found for sure in both places though. Cool... Thanks! I'll have to make a trip out there

Had the opportunity to swing by a store in the town where I went to college today, as I was driving back from the other side of the state from a business meeting. Picked up Incredible Hulk #190, 192, and 193, each one for $3, and I finally made my first foray into Conan the Barbarian, based on all of the positive things being said about it in the Best Marvel Superhero comic of the 1970's thread/poll, picking up #'s 45, 58, 60, and 62, each one for $1. I know where I can find a bunch more for $1 apiece, so I may have to make a quick trip to get them sometime soon.

Richard, drop me a line -I have some Conan the Barbarian doubles I have up in the Classic Comics Exchange list we had that I can send your way if you're interested. Some might be readers, but most are solid, and they're jsut looking for a good home... -M

That Catwoman story is one of the most hilarious things Doug Moench ever wrote.

I've managed to pick up two of my long sought-after classic comics "holy grails" in the past two weeks: the first was Marvel Masterworks: Doctor Strange Vol. 1 (the silver cover edition), which some of you ol' CBR'ers may remember has been high on my "most wanted" list for a good 4 years or so now. Price has always been the problem with this out of print book -- I'm a pretty thrifty comic collector and the £70 - £150+ that this book usually seemed to command was just way out of my price range. However, I picked this copy up for a little over £30 and it's in pretty flawless NM condition (just a few tiny knocks to the dust jacket corners). I think that maybe prices for this book have dropped recently because Marvel are putting out a 2nd printing next year for their 75th Anniversary. Anyway, I'm happy to have finally completed my Doctor Strange Masterworks collection at long last and especially happy to have all those wonderful early Ditko stories in my possession. My second "holy grail" purchase was Jonah Hex #1 from 1977. I'm working my way towards a complete run of the Bronze Age Jonah Hex comics and I already had All-Star Western #10 and #11, and Weird Western Tales #12, so the purchase of Jonah Hex #1 means that I now have all of the expensive issues in the run. This issue is probably in "Fine+" condition and was scored for around £15, including postage and packing, so I was well happy with that. I also got some Weird Western Tales issues for cheap (with British price stamps on them) ranging between "Good" and "Very Fine" condition.

Got my Captain Savage 18 in the mail today. It's around an 8.0 but it didn't even cost me $10.00. I think I'll do a Captain Savage double feature tonight as I've had #19 sitting in a long box for a few months. Now that I have in a nice shiny 9.2!
I've really no problem with this series. Gray Friedrich wrote a good war comic.
