Picked up a mini-series I didn't even know existed. Thanos (2003). I got 2-12 for a dollar each, just need to find #1 now! It actually was an ongoing. Starlin fell out with Marvel during the first six issues, then Keith Giffen came in and laid the groundwork for Annihilation. It only made it 'til issue 12, but from there, we'd get the Drax the Destroyer mini and Annihilation itself.
Also, if you look closely, there's an Ultraverse cameo. The first, I think, since Marvel shut it down.
Thanks for the info! Yeah, I just saw that these issues are quite expensive on mycomicshop.com. Will need to track down #1 before I read them!

Half Price Books was having their coupon sale again this week and today was 50% off your highest priced item. I was flush with birthday money, so Amy and I headed for Columbus for the day, with several stops on the itinerary including a couple of Half Priced Books.
First stop was a little Greek restaurant we had never been too-mmmm souvlaki for lunch. So good.
Then we hit the first Half Priced Books.
I picked out a trade to use the coupon on and raided their quarter and dollar boxes, getting the following:
John Carter of Mars The Jesse Marsh Years hardcover from Dark Horse, final price after coupon $4
from the quarter bins... 28 books for $7
Sabre #5 Hawkman ('86 series) 1, 17 Hawkmoon: The Mad God's Amulet #3 Starslayer #16 Grimjack #54-56, 58, 59, 61-66, 69 Scarlet Traces (Edginton/D'Israeli mentioned by Fanboy Stranger in another thread) 2-4, Jack Kirby's Secret City Saga (Roy Thomas/Steve Ditko) 1-4 Nexus #7 Lord Pumpkin #2 (Hotz art) Rune #1 (Barry Windsor-Smith) Sludge Red X-Mas (Ploog art)
and from the dollar bins
Conan (Dark Horse) #7 Conan the King #52 El Cazador: The Bloody Ballad of Blackjack Tom
next we went to a little plaza that has a Japanese bakery where my wife picked up a bunch of pastries she likes to take with her lunches for the week. I ran into the Casual Male there and used the birthdoy coupon they sent me to pick up a couple new t-shirts, and ran into Staples to get some more magazine file boxes for the shelves in the comic room. We also hit a little doughnut shop/bakery across the street and picked up so fresh baked doughnuts to being home before heading over to the Half Price Books by the OSU campus.
Here I picked out another trade, and a few books out of their dollar and fifty cent bins (they have no quarter bins)
I got the following: Jack Kirby's Captain America and the Falcon: The Swine collecting some of the 70's Kirby run on Cap, price after coupon $5
from the fifty cent bin: The Batman Adventures #14
from the dollar bins Catwoman #2-4 (Brubaker & Darwyn Cooke) Conan #1 2nd printing with the J. Scott Campbell cover Conan the Cimmerian #1 Joe Kubert cover variant King Conan: The Scarlet Citadel #3
so all in all a good day and lots of stuff to add to my to read pile (as if it weren't big enough already)
My wife, who has been on a Star Wars kick lately, picked up one of the John Williams soundtracks on CD and a Tales from the Empire prose anthology we didn't have as well.
I almost picked up Crumb's Book of Genesis at the second Half Price Books, but the dust jacket had a 4 inch tear in it, so I passed, but I was tempted. Today was the last day of the coupon week, so the shelves were a bit picked over, but I still found some cool stuff.

Issues 1-4 are fairly decent "versus Hydra" story. Then you get several issues inked by Syd Shores and then a few by John Severin. There's lots to like in those 19 issues.

Picked up this reader lot of 50's teen books for $10.50 shipped. I really like this design era for Pep - well, I like all design eras for Pep up until the 60's - and the cover for Patsy Walker #85, with the swimsuit, is excellent. Note how the gag on the two Patsy Walker covers is exactly the same, just in a slightly different context:

No new comic books purchases lately. I have mostly been buying toys since I have been thrilled to find 1966 Batman TV series official merchandise in stores.

I stopped by Half-Price books today and found that they were doing a sale where any book that wasn't bagged and boarded was only $0.10 each. I was able to find some really cool stuff to fill my Legion of Superheroes collection:
Legion of Superheroes v2: #330
Legion of Superheroes v3(1984): Annual #1
Legion of Superheroes v4:(1989): #7, #61
Legionnaires: #1
Weird Fantasy: #6

Finally stopped by this weird-looking little antique store just outside Williamsport, PA that I've been passing the last 13 months on my drive up there from Pittsburgh for work. I was going to go in and ask if they had any comics (I wasn't hopeful, but I was willing to take the chance since I had nothing better to do but check into the hotel), and there were about six short boxes right at the front of the store, so I immediately started leafing through them. It was mostly '90's and later $1 books, but I did pick up a VF copy of Conan the Barbarian #41 for $5; I would have bought the #30 for $2, but it had a huge chunk out of the bottom of the front cover and the next three pages had about a 1/2" tear through them under that chunk. There were some Battlestar Galactica and ROM issues, but since I just started collecting Conan (thanks, guys!), I didn't want to get into yet another new series or two.
However, while I was looking through those boxes, a guy came up to me and asked if I was a big collector. When I told him I was, he asked if I'd ever been to this shop in a little town about 15 miles down the road from where we were. I told him I hadn't, and he said that they have about "20,000 comics" there; he had a business card for them, which he gave to me. I was skeptical about the quantity, so I gave them a call as soon as I was done buying the Conan, and while they don't quite have 20K, the owner confirmed he has between 7K and 8K in the store; they will be open at 11 AM tomorrow and since I have to drive past there on my way home, looks like I'll be making a stop by there.

At last...AT LAST! In Dark Horse's collected Tarzan newspapers strips by Russ Manning #3, I finally found out how a certain adventure involving a giant worm ended! I read the beginning as a kid in the Sunday paper, and had been wondering for decades!
As for the two previous volumes, this third instalment (out of four) is a real treasure. Beautiful book!
