Well, I decided to make the trip to the comic shop in 100+ degree weather and I got stuck in traffic for 45 minutes on the freeway. The reward for my arduous journey was:
Legion of Superheroes v2(1980): #263, 303, 317
Legion of Superheroes v3(1984): #39
All in all, I would say it was a pretty good haul.

Night of Redemption! #4 (prestige mini, Wolfman Colan & Al Williamson Hawkman ('86) #9 Giant Size Daredevil #1 (only Bronze book I saw) The Destroyer (Marvel comic not mag) #3 (Walt Simonson cover, Gray Morrow interiors) Action Comics #588 (Hawkman & Hawkgirl by Byrne) Astro City #(Image mini) 1, 3, (ongoing) 8 Batman Black and White #1 ('96) with stories by Joe Kubert, Bruce Timm and Howard Chaykin)
not bad for $30 and change....even though I shouldn't have been spending anything this week...

Can't pass up Groo in a bargain bin. I wouldn't I just picked up Groo vs. Conan #1 from Dark Horse and it reignited my interest in Groo again, so it was a bit serendipitous that I found these today. -M

I managed to score the magazine-sized The Beatles: Their Story in Pictures off of eBay earlier this week. This has been on my "Wants List" for absolutely ages, so I'm really stoked to have finally got my hands on it. As a kid, I used to read this strip in serialised form in the pages of Look-In magazine and loved the hell out of it – being, as I was, a Beatles fan from almost as soon as I could talk. I particularly liked the photo-realistic look of renowned British artist Arthur Ranson's work as a youngster and, as an adult, I can see that Ranson was a perfect choice for such a "documentary style" strip (although flicking through the comic this morning, I've spotted a fair few panels that are clearly traced directly from famous or iconic Beatle photographs). For years I had no idea that the strip had been collected in magazine form in 1982 (no doubt it was aimed at the adult market, who wouldn't have read it in the pages of Look-In every week), but as soon as I discovered the existence of this magazine, it was on my list. It's probably taken me 8 years or so to actually get it though. For one thing, it seems quite rare and doesn't come up for sale on eBay very often, and for another thing it's always ludicrously expensive. Well, that is to say that it's more than a tenner! What can I say, I'm a thrifty comic collector! Anyway, I've got it now, for a price that was right, so I'm happy. Can't wait to get stuck into this tonight.

Just back from day one of the Boston Comic Con. I spent most of the day getting signatures, so I only bought a few things. I'll be going back tomorrow to really dig into the stacks, though. Ended up looking through stuff at one booth and bought about 17 issues for $1 each. The haul: Elephantmen #1 Our Army at War #296 Detective Comics #547 Groo #4 (Pacific) Jughead #200 (vol. 2) Kevin Keller #6 (George Takai variant) Kevin Keller #1 (throwback variant) Veronica #206 Veronica #205 And this batch of beauties: The same dealer had a bunch of Tomb of Dracula issues. I'm already kicking myself for passing over a couple of the Giant-Size Dracula issues. Luckily, I am going back tomorrow, so hopefully they will still be there. I'm sure I'll come home with a ton more stuff tomorrow. Very exciting.

I also had Ramon Perez add to my Archie artist jam sketch. Previously, I had Jeff Shultz draw Jughead as Captain America, and Dan Parent added Betty as Sharon Carter. This time, Ramon added Archie as The Winter Soldier. Very happy with how it turned out:

I stopped at a yard sale today and discovered that the guy had close to 4 long boxes of stuff from about 1986-1991 he was selling. The price was 25 cents each. I ended up with a big box of stuff - 73 issues for $18. First out of the box: final arc and final issue of Justice League of America Am I imagining it or is there something X-Men-ish about the first two covers? It could just be my imagination - when I was skimming through this page I thought that was Wolverine on the third cover until I noticed a split second later that it was a JLA comic, so maybe that put the X-Men in my head. But without checking any online X-Men galleries I almost think the first two look a bit like tribute covers to something from the Clarement/Byrne era.

Looks like it would be worth getting for the artwork alone, even if you had no interest in the Beatles at all. I don't usually like artwork traced from photographs but sometimes it works and this appears to be one of those times.

I just got back from day 2, where I really dove into the stacks. Ended up with a giant pile of stuff, almost all of it $1 each, though there are a handful I paid $3 each for. I'll be posting them all shortly.

I just got back from Boston Comic Con. I came home with a huge pile of stuff culled from the boxes. Almost everything I bought was $1 each, though I did buy a few for $3 each. I also bought three comics at a 3/$1 booth. The comics: 3 for $1: As you can see, as soon as I finished buying this Fiona Staples variant cover copy of Red Sonja #1, I walked it right over to Gail Simone's table and got it signed. The Kid Eternity #1 was mostly just because I needed a third comic for the 3/$1 deal, but I've heard interesting things about it, even though I am a bit gun shy with Ann Nocenti. $1 each: Atomic Robo vol. 1, just missing #4. That's the 2nd and 3rd printing of #1. The dealer had these priced at $10 each but he was selling everything for a buck apiece. Some of them are signed. The guys who do Atomic Robo were at the show, but since these were already signed, I didn't see any need to get them signed again. I could talk to the creators, of course, except I haven't read them yet, so... anyway, looking forward to trying this out once I have bought #4. I'm not really a big batman guy, but I do like the DC magic heroes. The Detective I bought for the Green Arrow backup. Can't go wrong with these. This dealer had another 15-20 later issues of ToD but I decided to just get the ealrier ones and the Giant-Size for now. I'm not quite ready to commit to collecting this series just yet. Same for Master of Kung Fu; I swear one guy had a whole long box of MoKF issues. Eventually I'll get to it. I'm getting very close to finishing both my Kull and Red Sonja collections. There will be a little more Kull later as well in the $3 pile. The yard sale pile I got last weekend only went up through #50, so today I picked up #51-62, the rest of George's run, as well as six earlier issues missing from the yard sale pile. Two of these I paid $3 for, the rest were $1. I still ended up one issue short of finishing the run, though, so I kinda wish I had just skipped those $3 issues; if I end up having to buy it from My Comics Shop, I could have just bought the others for cheaper as well. But, no big deal really. Hopefully my LCS will have the one I am missing. The dealer seemed almost as surprised as I was that he had the Pacific Groo issues in his dollar box, including #1. Hey, I don't price 'em, I just buy 'em. $3 each: Kull #1! Plus: Hero for Hire #6 and 7, which has one of the really underrated, awesome covers on it. Young Love #99. And Showcase #97 and 98, with the first solo Power Girl story. Other stuff I bought today: $1 each: Archie #421, 430 Giant-Size Master of Kung-Fu #2 Shade the Changing Man #4 (completes the run) Justice League of America #260 Night Force #1 Runners #1-5 (self-published book I bought from the creator on Artist's Alley) $3: Rat Queens #2 (cover B)

I really believe that the beauty of being a collector is hunting and finding treasures. Most of the books that I buy on these excursions don't even get read for a long while. Good haul Scott!
