Here's a few that I received in a shipment on Thursday... Love those painted covers on the Charlton books!
I now need ONE issue of DC's Ghosts to complete the run-- anybody have an issue #46 they want to part with?

I have been trying to fill in that run for a few years now, but nobody ever seems to bring issues to the shows I go to. -M

I’m always happy when they understate the grade. Well me, I'm obviously furious when they overestimate, but when they seriously underrate a high priced comic (like Uncanny #141), I feel bad. Lucky but bad, like I was taking advantage.

Nice bunch of books, Phantom. I had a hard time finding any of those Guns of the dragon books a few months ago.

Got these in the Mail today The Mr. Hyde/Cobra duo is one of my favority villain teams. I like to say that Mr. Hyde is both the brains and the brawn of the pair.

I never found Mister X #1 back when I was looking for it. I understood there was some dispute between publisher Vortex and the Hernandez Brothers so wonder if this was ever reprinted or collected? Okay, one final order... a Thor Vs. Ego The Living Planet comic from 2000. It reprints three Lee & Kirby classics. I hope it's as cool at The Day Of The Defenders one-shot from around the same time. I'm blaming Icctrombone as influence.

I made a couple Ebay purchases. I've received Invasion #1-3. I read Invasion #1 when it came out (or at least part of it, as it was really long and I was 9), but I've never read 2 or 3. I was trying to figure out how comprehensive my Doom Patrol binge read should be. Since DP crosses over into Invasion, even though I'm guessing the appearance will probably be limited, I figured I'd buy Invasion.
I also bought The Saga of Ra's Al Ghul #1-4 which is a mini-series reprinting his early Bronze Age appearance. I just received it in the mail a few minutes ago. It seems that mini-series like this were a common format for reprints in the 1980s just before TPBs became more ubiquitous.

Yes, Dark Horse collected the original Vortex material in a 300+ pg. hardcover in 2008. It's pricey and pretty impossible to find. However, they did print a TPB edition in 2017, at a much lower price ($24.99 USD). Not sure if it is still in print, but pre-loved editions are easier to find than the hardcover edition.
EDIT: Just checked-- Dark Horse website shows the TPB is out of print too, Amazon has several used copies for under $25, plus there's an e-book edition for $15. Hope this helps you!

It seems that mini-series like this were a common format for reprints in the 1980s just before TPBs became more ubiquitous. DC's purpose for those reprint series were (at least) two-fold, one to generate revenue on the cheap as reprint royalties cost less than page rates for new material, but (as Don McGregor often ranted about) the primary purpose was to eat up shelf space at comic shops to keep smaller competitors from getting rack space and reduce competition. The more product DC churned out that shop owners had to buy and shelve, the less money they had to spend on indies an the less shelf space they had to display it. -M

Eh, I don't know...Marvel did the same reprinting some of their big stuff in the 80s too, putting out Starlin's Warlock, some of Ditko's Dr. Strange and the Kree/Skrull Avengers issues. Those Neal Adams issues were already expensive for the era back issues. There was definitely and audience for those comics, if anything Marvel and DC neither one realized what they had until a bit later on when trades became ubiquitous and reprint collections more common.
The 'baxter' reprints of the Marshall Rogers Batman are really nice, they got full wrap around covers.

It was in the leters pages of Sabre and other places that he made these claims. -M

Ok, another lazy Sunday afternoon spent at one of my local shops... here's some of the loot.
I've never been a huge Sub-Mariner fan, but hey, silver age books in Fine+ condition for $4 apiece? I can't pass that up. Other stuff is mainly odds & ends, except for the copy of the Tales To Astonish one-shot signed by the artist (John Estes), and a VF copy of Life With Archie #60 (1st appearance of "The Archies" as a band).

Made a trip out to my lcs today on my day off, and had a little birthday money in my pocket from last week so I did some digging through their back issue bins. Tony had just bought 3 or 4 collections of older stuff and had only gotten 3 longboxes of stuff out and priced, but there were a few treasures for me within. And as a pull list customer, my 15% discount applies to back issues as well, so I came out with a pile o'stuff... How can you resist a beatnik Gorilla jamming on his instrument while everyone grooves baby? Angel & the Ape #1 1st appearance of Anthro in Showcase... Atom #9 great Creeper cover... two of the four issues I needed to wrap up that Doctor Fate run Alex Toth art... Three more Kirby Fourth World books... Some Phantom issues... one of three issues of Phantom Stranger needed to complete the run... a pair of late 60s Red Circle heroes books... Silver Age Spectre... some Spirit issues... some early-mid 50s Dell Tarzans... and an upgrade on Weird Worlds #1, my copy is missing about a quarter of the cover, now I have a complete one... -M
