Love those Giant-Size books in great shape....the most common flaw I come across is an indentation of the inner staples on to the cover.

Totally agree-- that's one of the first things I look for on 70's square-bounds. Fortunately, this GSSH#1 has none of that-- the spine is still square and not crushed, AND the only things keeping it from being NM- are a two ever-so-light non-color-break spine ticks and 1/32" white bar across the top of the cover, which indicates slight horizontal mis-cut of the book at printing time. The original printing sheen is still very evident. The interior is pristine off-white, complete and virtually odor free. I swear, it look like this book came off the press and was bagged immediately.
I'm not a slabber, but if I were going to send books to CGC, this would definitely be one of them. As it is, it's going into heavy mylar with several boards.

Awesome, it's really a chore to find these in great shape.
But when I do, I snap them up, even if they're not my A-list titles.
....even Giant Size Man Thing

Well, I hadn't done ebay in 13 years, but I broke down and looked there to find DNAgents #24 this summer because I had exhausted all local avenues at that point. And I had positive experiences with a few sellers, so did a few more and now, I have fallen down the rabbit hole. I had been doing the Lonestar auctions, and I still do those too. When we get to a new normal and it's possible to safely do comic cons and for me to resume forays to local shops, used book stores, antique malls, flea markets, etc. I'll probably stop using ebay again, but for now, it's one of the few resources available to me. I've gone once a month to my lcs to pick up my pulls and occasionally root around a few longboxes, and once to the used book shop in the same village, but everything else I have purchased since the pandemic has been online, via Lonestar, ebay, or the small FB group put together by the organizer of Gem City Comic Con where members can do auctions or claim sales. If the pandemic hadn't closed things down, I never would have gone back to buying on ebay, but you adapt to the circumstances. If I had remained out of work, I wouldn't have been buying comics, but I did go back and at more hours per week (often overtime) than I was doing pre-pandemic, so I have a little more discretionary income at the moment, which also played a part. And the fact a lot of sellers now accept payments directly and not through paypal removes one of my biggest issues that led me to quit ebay a while ago (most of my complaints with ebay were as a seller not a buyer too, and I am not selling there, so that's a factor too). So yes, you read correctly I said I didn't do ebay (and that was true from mid-2007 to mid 2020), but that changed a few months back. I guess one of 2020s lessons is to never say never. -M Is there an advantage to buying from lonestar directly rather than through eBay ? One more note about this; Most (if not all) of the Lonestar ebay listings are consignments with their consignment fee already applied. When you buy consignments direct from the site, the fee is added at checkout. I think 4.95 is their standard economy shipping rate, regardless of how many comics you order from the website.

This will be one of my last posts in this thread for the year-I have a few outstanding orders waiting to arrive, but with the possible closure of restaurants next week here in Ohio by order of the governor due to rising COVID cases, I may be out of work for a while, so household is adopting some austerity measures, which means I will not be buying back issues for a bit. Some stuff is already on the way, and I had a couple of bids in before the announcement, so I will have another post or two of new stuff yet, but I will be practicing a measure of restraint for the remainder of the year once stuff in motion is completed. I mentioned previously that I had some early Hawkman stuff coming, and it arrived today. Two ebay lots and one Lonestar order. There were a couple of other books included to make shipping worthwhile as well. Here we go...Brave & the Bold #35 (2nd appearance of the SA Hawkman)- I now have 5 of the 6 B&B appearances by Hawkman, I doubt I will ever get a copy of #34 as it is outside my comfort zone price wise unless I stumble into something or find a way to trade for it. continuing with some pre-Hawkman #1 Hawkman appearances, Mystery in Space #87-89 (this gives me 3 of the 4 issues featuring solo Hawkman strips the preceded the launch of his own title) and as for that Hawkman series, three more checked off the list-#5, 7 and 18 (giving me 22 of the 27 issues, I doubt I will ever own a copy of #1 or #4 for the same reasons as B&B 34, but I hope to fill in the other three missing issues at some point). That's it for the Hawkman stuff. I had 3 other books as well-Phantom Stranger #7 (leaving me needing only #12 which is one of the books I am awaiting to arrive), Tomahawk #136 (leaving only #140 to complete the Son of Tomahawk run, which will have to wait until next year) and Supergirl #3 (bought for the Zatanna back up, I am slowly trying to fill in all of Zee's solo appearances-it had been a back burner goal for a while, but with me finishing off some stuff, I was going to start working on it a little more, but now the rest will wait until next year (though I have a bid in on one more I expect to be outbid and I am not raising any of the existing bids I placed). Not bad. Assuming I get no more Hawkman stuff this year, I will have knocked off all of the Silver and Bronze Age solo Hawkman stuff except for 1 issue of B&B, 1 Mystery in Space 5 issues of Hawkman, 2 issues of Detective with Hawkman back-ups and 1 issue of World's Finest with a solo Hawkman feature (it was 2 but 1 is among the books I am waiting to arrive). I'll add needing Atom #7 to the list as well, as it features Hawkman's 1st appearance outside B&B when he teams up with Atom. Considering I didn't really start pursuing the pre-Shadow War solo Hawkman stuff until about halfway through last year, I've made a ton of progress in a short amount of time. Depending how things go, I am thinking we will see the rest of that stuff among my goals for 2021. -M

Figure this will be considered classic in time. Bought the TPB collecting the mini-series Batman White Knight. Was grocery shopping this morning at Walmart and the $19.99 trade was sticker priced $14.99 so grabbed it up. Have heard good things about this and as I flipped through it Sean Murphy's art really grabbed my attention.
Also if anyone is interested, Wally world also had TPB's at lower than cover price for Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War and Black Panther by Coates.

Writer/artist of Batman White Knight; Sean Murphy is a pretty good artist. He will throw in some abstract stuff into his style at times. Kind of reminds me a bit of Klaus Jansen and probably a big fan of Billy the Sink.
I thought that Tokyo Ghost future dystopia series was decent he did with Rick Remender on Image.

Last two batches from ebay have arrived... that completes the Phantom Stranger run for me, and leaves 1 Hawkman back up from World's Finest. Still a handful of Evanier/Spiegle Blackhawks to go though -M

Another small but very nice local find today-- including the last two issues of Tales to Astonish. The copy of Strange Tales #161 is straight-up gorgeous.
Plus, more Charlton kitsch... in decent shape... for Charlton.

Not really a purchase but a CGC idea I wanted to do. Two from my collection CGC'd and preserved. For two comics I bought close to 35 years ago for like $10 a piece, I'm happy with what I have graded. I'm looking for preservation rather than quality. I've had these books since I was 15 years old. Their condition tells a story: that a kid from the valley loved and cherished these books. While you can't see it, I'm happy that CGC acknowledged my Jack Kirby signature in the Tales to Astonish #35 and not give it the green label. Yes I got Jack to sign it in 1992... it's a funny story.

I bid on Detective Comics #272. It’s listed as 3.5 to 4.0. I’ll know if I won tomorrow night! It’s one of those “Batman and Robin fight a dumb monster” covers.

My friends used to mock me for liking Wasp and Ant-Man.
