They definitely count, and I love them. Sometimes, it's due to what you mentioned on content not being available elsewhere. I feel like the Sea Devils collection may be the only thing we ever get, I've lost hope of getting a color reprint (I think the 50's stories of the Blackhawk volume are in this category as well). Sometimes it's like the Martian Manhunter collection you mentioned, and it gives the specific stories of a character that was a backup feature in another title. I like the Elongated Man collection for this. Sometimes I actually also enjoy the B&W line art, for some reason I always grab my Showcase Supergirl editions versus the color Archive versions. Same with the Superman Family ones that contain the Jimmy and Lois issues. The Aquaman ones are fantastic as well, I love having 3 volumes of that, so much great art. Other times there are titles I'm more casual with and I just liked the value (at the time, being able to buy new) of some titles like Strange Adventures and Rip Hunter. On the Bronze Age side, I think they are still the only substanial continuous run reprints of All-Star Squdaron and DC Comics Presents (2 volumes in the latter case which is very nice). Warlord as well I think. Also, Amethyst, Captain Carrot, and Blue Beetle... I really hoped once they were printed in a Showcase, they would then do color... nope. A color volume of Captain Carrot was listed, at one time, but it vaporized. Is anyone having a hard time getting this stuff? Those books were all quarter bin filler for decades.

Do trade collections/compilations count as "classic comics" purchased lately? I hope so as I don't collect individual comics anymore due to various reasons. I think so, I proudly showed off my two Thor and lone Captain America Epic Collections about a month or two ago. It bothers me that DC's attempt at doing so have kind of fallen on deaf ears (I'm looking at you Power Of Shazam! and Sandman Mystery Theater)

Maybe, but those decades are over. I see lots of dollar boxes at comic shows and flea markets, but these days most of the stuff in them is "only" 25 years old or newer. Not much stuff on newsprint.

Speaking of SEA DEVILS and AQUAMAN, how do you feel about the stories in those comics? I absolutely love anything in pop culture that deals with underwater settings, but I wound up being pretty disappointed by both those titles. I had wanted to read SEA DEVILS for years and I thought the first two tryouts in Showcase were excellent, but once the series proper started I got weary of the monster of the week formula. I really want to like Sea Devils, but despite the glorious Russ Heath covers and interior artwork, the stories are absolutely dire to the point of being completely unreadable for me.

SC, thank you so much for the great and resourceful response. I could kick myself as I had many of the volumes you mentioned years ago, but wound up selling them all during a period where I was feeling suffocating by having so much "stuff" in my life. I still feel that way these days, but now as you say the reality of never being able to read some of this material has been sinking in. So I'll definitely take your suggestions to heart and start scoping out the used bins. I recently picked up the OOP SHOWCASE PRESENTS: MODERN LOVE volume, which is likely not anyone on this site's idea of compelling comics, but the rarity of it really intrigued me. So far the stories have been little slices of what almost seems like ancient history nowadays. I'm not sure I'll ever make it through the whole volume, but I have found it much more interesting than I ever would have expected and some of the art carries the load for the histrionics of the stories, haha. I know there is an EC Archives hardcover collecting its Modern Love title...but here, do you mean the Showcase Presents [DC's] Young Love V. 1? I think there's another cover for this Showcase volume, but here's the version I have: I love this Showcase volume and agree with you about the art. You can't go wrong when a lot of art (incl. the cover obviously) is by Romita Sr., thanks to his work on the Mary Robin R.N. serial that ran in Young Love. Also some great work by Sekowsky, John Rosenberger, Tony Abruzzo, Colan, and others.

You must be a rich man to own comics and then buy collections of the same comics. Why don't you just read the comics you already have and save yourself the price of a reprint? Spend the money you would've spent on a reprint on some new comics!

It's a sickness. seriously, I have more than a few formats of my favorite series he Avengers. I have the comics, essentials , Dvd- rom , reprint comics. I also have various collected omnibuses and tpb's. He funny thing is that I find myself reading Marvel Unlimited these days rather than pulling out the actual books.

So many folks here rave about The Brave and the Bold. While I grew reading some of Jim Aparo's later run on Batman, I only have a few issues of B&B. So I went ahead and used a bunch of credit card reward points to get the Brave and the Bold Bronze Age Omnibus vol. 2! It reprints #110-156.
In the same order, I also picked up Avengers Epic Collection 20: The Crossing Line, reprinting Avengers #319-333, Annual #19, and some material from crossovers in other annuals.

Is anyone having a hard time getting this stuff? Those books were all quarter bin filler for decades. I don't want floppies. I HAVE THE FLOPPIES. I want collections with good printing. I like collections with good printing as well. Some of that newsprint paper of my beloved old Bronze Age books is a little rough on the eyes even though the covers still look cool and I love the nostaliga of having the originals. But sitting down with a collected run of favorite issues with good print quality is so easy on the eyes and fun. Back on Showcase, I have the Amethyst one as well, but I feel like that one suffers from the lack of color. I went out and bought all the individuals issues it contains, and those were nice to read, but I still want a color collected edition.
