Star Blazers was my favorite cartoon back in the day. I never even knew there was a comic! Same here, I watched that show religiously haha! Yeah, Comico did two series actually, this one from 1989 with the Ken Steacy covers and then an earlier one from 1987. I've seen another one in the 90's listed from Argo comics but I haven't read it. Dark Horse did some work much later on in support of the remake Yamato 2199 series. There were also some early 80's books that just used animation cell art. If you love the classic series, not sure if you've ever watched the original Japanese Yamato series that they harvested for the Star Blazers we grew up with. It's a total trip to watch subtitled, I actually enjoy both now! These are the DVD's I bought: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001NBLW2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Was at the LCS yesterday and wound up picking these up for $15 each, which is a good price on these... Also got a mail call yesterday, one of the 2 smallish ebay orders I bought, this one was mostly from the DC adventures line of stuff based on the Timm animated series-Superman and Gotham Adventures, plus another Kitchen Sink Spirit knocked off the list. the other order should arrive early next week. -M Those are great purchases, I love those old Famous 1st Editions and a big fan of the Timmverse comics too. Look forward to seeing your next batch when they arrive!

So estimated delivery date was Monday, but the other small ebay order arrived in this afternoon's mail. A trio of Fantagraphics era Usagi's and a pair of Legends era DC books. I sold my off the rack copies of Legends when pricing for #3 was at its peak, with the idea I would either get a trade or eventually replace them when prices dropped. I picked up 1, 2, 4, 5, for a $1 each at recent shows, and got this #3 for about $5 (the total lot worked out to less than $3 per book before shipping, slightly over $3 per book with shipping-considering what Fanta Usagi's are fetching on the market currently that's real good price-there were several others Usagi issues from this seller that I bid on but they went for much more than these did. I still need to track down a Legends #6 to complete my reacquisition of the series (which may be the only DC x-over series that I actually like, though that may be nostalgia as that was when I was getting into DC big time after growing up a Marvel Zombie kid-I have about 10-15 Marvels to every 1 DC comic I owned growing up, I started expanding into DC with Flash and JLA in the mid80s, and about 85-86 was going all in and leaving behind most a lot of Marvel). -M

No, I haven't watched the original series. It would be interesting, especially with subtitles.

I decided to finally go for it and last night ordered the recently released first volume Micronauts omnibus. Amazon hooked me up and it was at my door at 8AM this morning. It's the collection I never thought we would see released and one of my most wanted for many years. It contains the first 29 issues of the original Marvel series plus the first 2 annuals, all material I have the originals of but now I have a crisp reading copy that looks great on the eyes (sometimes my old beloved original copies of comics from the 70's and 80's are sadly a little blurred here and there). The quality really looks great just flipping through the volume, the margins are good and see my additional comments below on the coloring. Best of all, it's a "slim omnibus" at only 744 pages which I find much more comfortable to read than those much thicker tomes I just can't sit comfortably with (and I've tried all the suggestions with those, they just don't work for me). So with NO plans on this fine lazy Sunday morning, I am signing off to revisit an old favorite, definitely going to be a cover to cover read!

What I noticed on the coloring as I started out, it looks like stuff like gradient backgrounds are a little crisper in the digital style. It doesn't bother me, but I know these details do matter to people considering reprint collections. I was able to do a compare per below where the first 2 side by side are the coloring from the original first issue (left) and the Special Edition reprint a few years later (right) which I didn't realize had been recolored! Then below a picture I took from my book (had to crop a bit, I was having trouble scaling down as the gradient started looking checkered which it doesn't in person). It looks to me like they went back to more the original colors for the omnibus, with some digital enhanced pattern backgrounds/fills, and a little brighter overall. So not perfect for the purist, but again works for me just fine. New omnibus:

If Rom and The Micro-Nauts ever get the Epic Collection treatment like Master Of Kung-Fu did, I'll scoop them up in a heartbeat. I'm kind of done with omnis after how big Man-Thing turned out to be

I agree... I find Omnis unpleasant to handle. Epics are just right, IMO.

I agree... I find Omnis unpleasant to handle. Epics are just right, IMO. They remind me of being 10 and reading my mom's Collector's Edition Shazam! reprints from the 70's and I mean that in the best way possible. But yeah, they are cumbersome and mostly just exist to be showpieces for the owner

But yeah, they are cumbersome and mostly just exist to be showpieces for the owner Omnibus sizes can vary quite a bit, I too will no longer buy the really thick ones as they are too cumbersome for my tastes. But the Micronauts one is relatively slim as I mentioned above. See below a 500 page Epic Collection on top of the Micronauts (a little over 700 pages) on top of an approximately 1,100 page DC One Million omnibus. The Man-Thing one is even a little bigger at about 1,200 pages! I have a ton of Epic Collections and I too thought they were perfect early on in terms of size, but the paper quality on some volumes got really hit or miss as they used different printers. The paper quality on this Micronauts volume is on another level. I won't go much above the size of this one though, it's about my cutoff for comfort. And I read it for several hours today, made it halfway through in fact, and totally comfortable (unlike when I read say the one right below).

You're the 4th person to say this ( Including me). I wonder if sales will ever dictate the elimination of oversized omnibi ?

I'm a big fan of Bill Mantlo's writing, but I have not read any Micronauts since I was a very, very young lad in the late '70s (it appeared in black & white as a back-up strip in Marvel UK's Star Wars Weekly comic in '78 and '79). I'd like to read the at least the early issues, with Michael Golden on art chores, and have been wondering whether to get the omnibus, the Special Edition '80s reprint, or the original issues (which aren't that pricey). This post of yours helps me make a more informed decision.

Those are the acme of the series, but the entire series is really good.

The only reason I bought my HTD and Man-Thing omnis is because they were theoretically cheaper then buying the "Complete Collection" volumes. HTD was 35 and Man-Thing was about 64, so I feel like I got my money's worth for them both (the only complaint with Man-Thing is that it doesn't collect Infernal Man-Thing, but it was probably published before the omni came out). I've thought about buying the New Warrior omnis, but I'd rather wait to see if they'll get the Epic Collection treatment
