Wrapped up my first day at Motor City Comic Con. I picked up a lot of filler issues, but the crown jewel in today's acquisitions was Avengers #8. For some reason, I've always had a fondness for Kang, and obtaining his first appearance was always on my to-do list. Best yet, I got it from a dealer that I really like and respect. It's probably a VG+/F-, and he let me have it for $40. Just finished reading it, too. I'd read and enjoyed the Marvel Essentials reprint in the past, but reading the real thing was a whole other level of joy. I flipping love vintage comics! I have that one in Marvel Masterworks. I love the way that Kang thinks he's won after he defeats Thor, Iron Man, Giant Man and Cap and he's dismissive of the Wasp and the Teen Brigade, and then they sneak in and bring him down! Ha!
And I also love Wasp saying something like "I bet he's real dreamy under that blue and purple makeup."
There is so much to love in Avengers #8.

Congrats on the pick up Shax. Reminds me of my now long gone Avengers collection, 8 and 9 were the first of earliest issues I nabbed lo those many years ago.

I think the actual origin is always my favorite part of the story. It's pretty darn elaborate for 1964. You can tell Jack and Stan were just having a ton of fun making crap up for this one -- "I've got a gravity reverser," "Well I can cancel that with my repulsor rays," "I've got an Uru hammer," "Well I can send it to another dimension!" "Well I bet you don't have the energy to do that twice!" etc etc.
And yes, The Wasp both playing horribly to stereotype and yet making all the difference by the climax and yet still needing to be rescued like a helpless female was pretty classic.

It's great stuff. It's one of the few series I have left that I bought off the racks and still have the issues I bought. Even when I was getting rid of everything I couldn't let that Moebius art go.

Picked up this two NM issues for $10 total... Been years since I read this, and I recall precious little about it, but I loved it at the time. Happy reading!

Well my mailbox was bursting full of comics and comic related material today, as my Lonestar order arrived, a package from a trade paperback swap site on am part of showed up, and other stuff arrived as well. So, here's today haul.... Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting... That completes the Richard Dragon series and the Immortal Iron Fist series for me. A little sword and sorcery anyone? completes the Warlord annuals and the recent Warlord series by Grell, gets me close on Kull but still need a handful. some completed runs now... complete's Marvel's Indy series, the X-Men vs. Agents of Atlas mini and the Brubaker penned Marvels Project mini... some classics in trades and classic trades... i.e. the Fireside Super-Hero Woman volume and the Barry Windsor-Smith Conan archives.. and then the not quite classic trades that arrived today... though Fear Agent reads like a modern successor to EC sci-fi stuff, and Fatale is Lovecraftian noir. Wasteland was something I asked about in the series you haven't read thread here... and not a comic, and not exactly a new acquisition, but I finally got the Kevin Nowlan Dr. Strange print I had re-framed (it's old frame was cheap and broke) and hung up today... Got some reading to do.... -M

Decided to visit a comic book store instead of seeing ASM 2 tonight... I do so love .25 bins. For $10 total: NEXT wave 1-5 Heroes for Hire (2007) 4, 8 Daughters of the Dragon Special Marvel Team Up (the recent Kirkman one) 2-3 Infinity Inc (Steel Version) 1-2 JLA (2006) 24, 35-36 Jack of Fables 41, 42, 46. 49 HARD Corps(90s valiant) 22-24 Secret Weapons 1, 5-7 Solar, Man of the Atom (90s Valiant) 43, 47-54 Harbinger (90s Valiant) 9-10 26-28, 30-31, 33-34 And a couple actual Classics: X-Factor 42 Captain America 316, 353 It was kinda crazy, they had quite alot of stuff I'd never seen in a quarter bin before.. most of the Busiek T-Bolts run, a couple random Astro City issues, Ellis' X-Men, Morrison's Doom Patrol and Sandman Mystery Theatre. Sadly, I only found a couple random issues of each, so I ended putting them back.. I ran out of time (I only got there 1/2 hour before close, and stuff taht I know is in trades I don't like to get random issues unless it's a test read

I was traveling for business today and came across this funky little store in this out-of-the-way town in north-central PA. They didn't have a huge selection of comics (they were primarily selling board games and Magic: The Gathering cards), but they had about a dozen short boxes, including some nice Silver Age/early Bronze Age books. They had a Marvel Two-in-One #1, which was the last issue I needed to complete the series. I put it at VF-, as there is a small ding on the back cover and a few stress lines around the bottom staple, but the interior pages are perfectly creamy with absolutely no browning; they were asking $22 for it, and I countered with $17, which they accepted.
After that I went to a store I'd been to before near my usual hotel and found the following:
Daredevil #99 for $5 Spectacular Spider-Man #141 (Punisher appearance), #148 (Inferno tie-in), and #149 (Carrion appearance and part of the Clone Saga) for $3 each.
They also had a table of discounted TPBs, so I picked up the paperback Avengers Masterworks #4 and Thor Masterworks #4 for $8 each; they retail for $24.99, and the hardcover versions go for $100 or more due to being out of print. With the Avengers book, I now have every issue of the original Avengers series in one form or another (#1-30 in the Omnibus, #31-99 in Masterworks, #100 up in floppies)

I happened across a copy of Marvel Presents Defenders #3 for $12 and Defenders #12 for $4. Both were in pretty good shape. I passed on both but I might have to go back and get them.

Neal Adams came to my area's LCS today in preparation for this weekend's Comicpalooza. I got my copy of Action Comics #485 signed by him for free, which was pretty awesome. He's pretty cool guy who loves to answer questions and was telling stories the whole time there.

Big ole bunch of comics coming my way. Among them:
Elektra (Miller series) #1, 3-7 V for Vendetta #6-8 Captain Marvel #6, 35, 61 Dr Octopus: Negative Exposure: #1, 5 Spawn #18, 19 Amazing Spider-Man #307, 322, 354, 373, 379, 381, 397 Daredevil Man Without Fear #2 Daredevil (Brubaker issues) #46, 47, 48, 49, 50 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87 Thor #348 Deadshot Mini Series #2 Captain America #247
At $1 per ish, I had to snag some of these. The ASM, Cap Marvel and Thor stuff fill holes. I now have the full negative exposure storyline, which I enjoyed. The rest are issues I just want to read based on what I have heard.
