I've still somehow never seen The Changeling despite enjoying ghost stories and all the raves it gets. I really need to fix that.
The Ju-On series is tremendous, at least the six films that creator Takashi Shimizu is involved with. His 2005 movie Reincarnation is also excellent.
I actually liked the U.S. remake of The Ring better than the original.
Surprised nobody's mentioned The Haunting yet (the '60s original, NOT the '90s remake). One of the greatest ghost movies ever.
Another really good one is The Abandoned (2006).

Seeing Roquefort Raider ’s posts about the two sequels to The Omen in the Classic Movies thread reminded me that the original with Gregory Peck was a damn scary movie. Can’t forget a flying sheet of glass, a fall from a balcony, digging up a grave, and of course, “It’s all for you, Damien…”

The Wicker Man-the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang-The Child Catcher is scarier than any monster, any slasher/killer, and any supernatural force. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?-that thing creeps me out in so many ways, both the original and the later tv movie version, with Lynn and Vanessa Redgrave. Lynn is well scary in that. Willy Wonka-Wonkatania! Sleeping Beauty-Maleficent gave me nightmares for years. I couldn't even look at the record sleeve that we had for the film.
Honorable Mention: The Wicker Man-remake....it is scary how bad it is.
I'm serious, on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Willy Wonka. The former scared the ever-lovin' pee-pee out of me, as a kid. It was shown on some holiday and I ran screaming out of the room, when the Child Catcher leered towards the camera, when he is decked out as the lollipop man. Wonka is unsettling, the first time you see it and the trailer was somewhat terrifying, when I was a kid and saw it advertised on tv.....
I still say that when he gets caught in the net, they should have had the children beat him to death, just to show he was dead and done.
I remember the scene of Augustus stuck in the chocolate tube being played endlessly on tv, when the film was released.

I don't think The Bone Tomahawk has been mentioned yet.
I don't think it's so much scary as horrifying, but it still sent shivers up my spine like few other films ever did.
I was also on the edge of my seat watching Open Water, but I have this thing about sharks...

I saw Psycho for the first time late at night on Channel 9 in NYC when I was about 14. Nothing had prepared me for how intense the experience of watching it would be. Even the title was creepy. (Remember, I lived in a town with an insane asylum up on the hill.)
The climax in the fruit cellar made me jump so much I fell off the edge of the bed. The eerie, suspenseful atmosphere of that movie was like nothing I’d ever felt before. There’s no fright like seeing that movie for the first time .

I’m thinking about doing a Halloween marathon with my wife. What are your 5 scariest movies you ever saw ? Honestly, I'm the wrong guy to ask. I don't like horror movies but not because I find them scary (I guffawed my way through The Exorcist--so silly and over-the-top). The only films in the genre I ever found (mildly) scary were the original Halloween and the 1960 version of The Haunting. Now Jurassic Park *did* give me nightmares, which no horror flick has ever done.
Cei-U! I summon my missing "horror lover" gene!

A Tale of Two Sisters Ring The Eye Ju-On Audition
Tale of Two Sisters and The Eye (the Thai original, that is) are both excellent, though I don't think I ever figured out what was actually going on in ToTS. Definitely worthy of a rewatch, though.
Audition is an acknowledged classic as well, but I'm not at all into extreme torture movies so have never seen it myself.

I'm not either, and don't think of Audition as falling into that category (I don't believe I've ever seen any, so I'm going strictly by the description). I think much more is suggested than actually shown in Audition.
Haven't seen ToTS or Ju-On or The Eye.

It's really just the final scene that is bad.
It took me a couple viewings of AToTS and reading some discussions for me to get it. If you want me to explain it in private message let me know!

That scene in Ju-on kept me sleeping without covers for a very long time after watching it.

Thanks, I may end up having to take you up on that, but I'll give it another shot first.
