I guess there are lots of choices but I think I'd go with something like a higher graded All-Star Western #10 or a mid-grade Hawkman #4. A lot of my other choices (at least on my research) are pretty much priced out of my reach. Hawkman #4 did come to mind for me as well! Another book I kind of wish I had picked up in the past. I mentioned it earlier, but I was thinking of doing another round with a $10,000 limit if there's any interest (any feedback from folks is appreciated), so may be another opportunity to add one of those pricier choices. |

Maybe a stupid question, but one of those FF 1’s is described as “pre-owned.” Are there any comic books on the back-issue market that aren’t pre-owned? Certainly! Two decades back, I had the fortune of being allowed into the basement of a comic shop that had been storing unsold stock in long boxes since the 1970s. Looking back, I wish I'd bought more of it instead of cherrypicking runs and issues that I was interested in. Hey, maybe that's where I'd spend my $1,000  |

Looks like I could get a pretty nice copy of Mad #4 for that. I have an inordinate love for Superduperman. Mad #12 would be another possible.
But in all honesty I’d never pay a grand for a funnybook.

I've never really understood the preference of one goofy arbitrary system over the other. The intent of either is to give a common reference point and language for people to have a frame of reference and be able to communicate, the insistence on clinging to one or the other exclusively when both exist (and it doesn't matter which came first, which is more popular, which is more accurate, etc.) defeats the purpose of having any such system. It's a case of if you have two, you have none, unless people are conversant and utilize both. -M |

It's a case of if you have two, you have none, unless people are conversant and utilize both. -M I can only speak for myself, but my preference is driven by my observation on how the 10-point system (which then drives 25 overall numeric possible values with the decimal place options) has been leveraged to market census populations as the basis for a large population of buyers who I perceive as "buying the number, not the book" so to speak. However...and this is key, that is again my personal viewpoint/opinion. I know that many, including a number of folks here, do not share that opinion, and that is perfectly fine. It's a free market, and even more importantly, if something brings you happiness, that's all that's important. In other words, if you just landed a 9.8 on a special book and you feel like celebrating here, I'm going to absolutely give you a big congratulations because it's a moment to celebrate someone else's happiness and what they value. |

The comic book world did a fine job back in the day of educating dealers and collectors on what exactly a Fine was versus a Very Fine. Grading companies seem to purposefully obscure their grading standards. There are so many stories of books being submitted to CGC and then unslabbed and resubmitted, only to earn a far higher grade. I KNOW what NM- is. I THINK I know what a 9.2 is, but I'm not confident predicting what CGC will decide. I suspect that its attempt to be more precise actually invites it to be more arbitrary and subjective.

I wouldn't even go for Conan the Barbarian #1, since I have umpteen gazillion reprint verrsons already. (W elllll... maybe more like five, but that's still plenty). Is it cheating to use the money to order a custom-made hardcover collection of John Coleman Burroughs' John Carter of Mars newspaper strips? I admit I'm quite envious of DubipR 's custom collections. It's a great idea. |

It's a great idea. We've consulted with the made-up judges, and since it still technically represents only "one volume", we're going to go ahead and say you're approved! I think a NM- is a 9.2
Then there's VF/NM (9.0), VF+ 8.5
I really don't have the patience to nitpick between all 3, because the same book submitted 3 different times might get all 3 classifications.
I recently bought an undervalued CGC 8.5 (for $90) because its noticeable flaw, a spine ding which doesn't break colour can be pressed out and taken it into NM/NM+ territory (and those sell for $500 up). So VFs aren't always that bad.....
