9. The Trimviruate of Terror9. The Circus of CrimeEveryone loves the circus! Unless... It's a CIRCUS OF CRIME! I have a real soft spot for their appearance in Avengers #60 -- talk about punching up out of your league -- but my favorite storyline with them is in the pages of Ghost Rider when The Clown becomes leader. Regardless of which incarnation, though, these guys and gals are always a barrel of fun.  |

Big Fan of The Wasp & Yellowjacket (XD)  Always believed The Circus of Crime had some potential, if they ever could get their act together   |

9. Brotherhood of Evil Mutants
Mystique, Destiny, Blob, Pyro, Avalanche, Rogue X-Men #141, Marvel, 1980  This is definitely "my" version of the team. They were Freedom Force by the time I knew them, but are better as the Brotherhood. A good collection of classic X-Men foes and great new faces, here for perhaps the best X-Men story ever. Rogue will make a nice addition the next time we see them. |

As I mentioned, I've been ludicrously busy both at work and at home. So I have fallen behind on this even sooner than usual. But here we go again...
Mr. Hyde and The Scorpion - I haven't read this book, I don't think. It's before I started reading my own comics and I don't think I made it this far in my back-issue reading. It's an interesting team though.
Claremont-Era Brotherhood of Evil Mutants - Have we seen them yet? I can't remember. One of the down-falls of falling behind. I've mentioned I find Claremont almost unreadable now. But at one time I did like this team.
Thanos and Mangog - Thanos does nothing for me. And I really don't like Romita, Jr.'s art. Soooo...I'll pass.
The 3 Supermen From Krypton - Sigh.
The Mutants from Thundercats - I'm becoming concerned by the widespread mutantism in the U.K. I got nothin' on the Thundercats. Way after my time.
The Wonderland Gang - I think that the last time I read a regular Batman issue was in the late 90s. So...yeah. I'm a little surprised this group never showed up earlier though. At least Mad Hatter and Tweedle-Dee and Dum seem like a no-brainer.
Injustice League - I definitely should have thought of these guys. I love that era of the Justice League. So neat.
The Beagle Boys - We shall see them again. No...really. I'm serious this time.
The Marauders - Context clues lead me to assume these folks fought the X-Men well after I last read the X-Men. I'm sure they're full of marauding goodness.
Count Nefaria's Lethal Legion - I was buying Avengers semi-regularly at this time. But not this issue. Were they really lethal though? Who did they kill?
Brotherhood of Evil - I don't think we've seen this iteration of the Brotherhood before. The good...Mallah and The Brain (sung to the tune of Pinky & the Brain). The bad...I tried to re-read New Teen Titans when Shax was reviewing and...it was NOT an easy read.
The Gotham City Sirens...And Edward Nigma - We talked about my Batman reading above. But this looks like it could be fun.
THE ROGUES - Yeah...I know they were on my list. But good for them for showing up again.
Mad Thinker & Puppet Master - I like this team-up. It's been a long time since I've read those books, but cool.
The Un-Men - M. W. Gallaher wins the day. Excellent pick.
The Circus of Crime - I like the Circus of Crime. That's it. That's the post. What...they can't all be brilliant.

I had already addressed the Terrible Trio when they showed up earlier. That one I remembered. I inexplicably like them, though I 100% shouldn't. I actually bought that Batman #176 as a back-issue (I probably still have it in a box somewhere) when I was buying anything that could reasonably be considered Earth-2. I think the Batman vs. Super-Villains stories of that vintage hold up much better than the Batman vs. whatever bat-guano crazy aliens they came up with stories. So I like the Terrible Trio and wish I could have Mego figures of them. |

9. Puppet Master and Mad ThinkerMy #9 happens to be the same as Rob Allen's. Check out what he wrote; it goes for me too. I'll add that my very favorite appearances were when they were joined by other baddies, such as in Avengers #63. Roy Thomas did the dialogue and not only do we get Egghead pretentiously quoting Shakespeare, but he fits right in with Thinker's and PM's toxic relationship and their ever-present bickering. My favorite exchange: Egghead: "Quickly...we must activate our android!" Thinker: " Our android? It was my genius alone which designed that brute!" Puppet Master: "We're not trying to steal your patent, Thinker..."  Another example is in Fantastic Four #300. In this issue the Thinker is joined by the Wizard, and they both want the Thinker's erstwhile partner Puppet Master to wreak havoc at the wedding of Johnny Storm and the PM's stepdaughter Alicia Masters (this was back before it was decided that "It's really Lyja the Skrull impersonating Alicia"). PM naturally has misgivings but knows if he refuses to help, the Thinker and the Wizard will still attack the wedding assemblage anyway. So he agrees to help them--as long as they leave Alicia alone. They agree and the plot is hatched; through his puppets the PM will mind-control Ben and have Ben crush Johnny's skull at the wedding ceremony. Then in the ensuing mayhem the Thinker and Wizard will attack with their "killer roboids." Wizard: "Are you certain the Puppet Master can be trusted?" Thinker: "Of course! He cannot stand the thought of his step-daughter being married to the Human Torch. The chances of him not carrying out his part of our plan are 0.13%. And he's certainly no threat to us because he can control only one mind at a time with his puppets. Relax, Wizard, I have everything covered. " Famous last words  However, before the ceremony PM overhears Alicia and Ben talking and it's clear to him that she still cares for Ben. PM can't go through with the plan and instead mind-controls Dragon Man and turns him on the Thinker and the Wizard and their "killer roboids" (which were to be deployed at the wedding). I love how PM's conscience, and his love for Alicia and her happiness, won out here; a touching story IMO.

#9- The Beagle BoysFaces only Ma Beagle could love. Duckburg's most wanted criminals make my list because they're just silly and fun. What started off as a Carl Barks gag as a foil for Scrooge McDuck turned these.... oh god, how many Beagles are there now, let's say a million, criminals into a longstanding foil for Scrooge's bank vault. Five identical brothers with revolving prison numbers that created mayhem and chaos. While they look like simpleton burglars, their knowledge of sciences is astounding in what they use to break into the vault. The contraptions they make take skills; that involves metallurgy, physics, and chemistry. And the numerous times the jail has let these clowns out... that's a study in psychology! Their proud of their criminal enterprising as they wear their prison numbers with pride. They're silly and fun and ruffle the feathers of the richest duck in the world. 167–671. 761-176. 716-167. 617–716. 671-167. 671–761. 176-167. Bigtime. Burger. Bouncer. Baggy. Bankjob. Bugle. Babyface. I don't know anything about these characters. Do they have distinct personalities ? If they don't , they are on the same par with AIM and don't qualify. |

9. The Marauders.I dislike them tremendously! I really do! And so they make this list, because we really should hate "good" villains! But their main claim to fame, and the reason they're here, is the Marauders' efficiency. When they were introduced during the Mutant Massacre story line, they didn't strut around explaining their plans and eventually slipping off a banana peel of their own making; no, they went after the Morlocks and killed most of them, went after the X-Men and crippled most of them, went after X-Factor and crucified one of them, and made life difficult for everyone without being beaten at the end of the story. Heck, they were so nasty that they even pushed pure-hearted Colossus to kill one of them! (And not accidentally, either, nor in self-defense; just out of sheer anger). The X-men took years to recover from the beating they received, and I'd argue that they never actually did. What other villains can brag of such a feat? This write up and history lesson makes me almost want to brave Claremont's insanely long dialogue to read it. Almost. |
