Hi, I was looking for some recommended reading for Darkseid particularly stories that involve him with Orion and Superman.
Darkseid is sort of strange for me I've always liked the character but I have never read any stories with him in it.

Darkseid is sort of strange for me I've always liked the character but I have never read any stories with him in it. In my opinion, you have to start with the original New Gods. Heck, maybe pick up the Kirby's Fourth World trades and read all of it. You won't be disappointed. Beyond that, I loved Darkseid in the X-Men/New Teen Titans special.

The essentials are Kirby's "Fourth World" stuff and Walt Simonson's Orion series.
Even though it's more of a Metron story, I've always loved Rick Veitch's Swamp Thing 62. Eclipso 10 is also an interesting Darkseid story-- Eclipso and Darkseid play chess on the moon and trade war stories.

Yeah, I'd say the only truly essential stuff is Kirby's New Gods, Mister Miracle, and The Forever People.
After that, Walt Simonson's Orion is one of the very few things worth looking at at all.
For Darkseid as a more conventional supervillain, the best effort was probably the Great Darkness saga in the Legion of Superheroes.
I'd stay away from all Superman stories, as they almost always just use Darkseid as a punching bag to make Superman (or the JLA or whoever) look powerful/indomitable/etc. This includes Morrison's much over-praised (as far as Darkseid and the New Gods are concerned) JLA.

New Gods for sure, followed by Hunger Dogs. I'll throw in all three series of Super Powers also. Not the best quality-wise, but it's campy fun and you get to see Superman and the rest of the gang battle Darkseid. My highest recommendation goes to: The Great Darkness Saga. No Orion or Supes in this one, but this was the first Darkseid story that really made me understand just how powerful he was as a villain. Also considered the definitive LoSH story by a contingent of Legion fans (including me).

It might not line up well with Kirby canon, but JLA: Rock of Ages was pretty damn awesome. DARKSEID ISEveryone says that but I don't see it. RoA looks to me much the same as the usual DCU version where Darkseid is just there to be physically defeated by the heroes. Instead of getting punched out by Superman, the Atom brings him down by going inside his head or something, isn't that the one? I could be mixing it up with some other JLA/Darkseid story, it's been a long time since I looked at it. I believe this is also the storyline where they have Batman scaring Metron literally just by saying "Boo!" to him: this kind of nonsense is the lowest order of fan-service and any writer who indulges in it isn't going to get high marks from me, no matter how accomplished they may be otherwise. And as far as I recall, Orion was written in Morrison's JLA as a mindless thug, slavering at the mouth in one scene (or was that in the Mark Waid run?), the more to impress the reader with the contrasting moral uprightness of Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, et al. When I see this kind of thing, I don't think they're even trying to write the New Gods - they're just using them to make the popular heroes look superior, introducing whatever distortions to the characters they deem necessary to that end. Much the same thing was done in a different way with Orion in the recent WW series.

I know it is generally not well regarded here, but I did enjoy the 6 issue Legends mini series as well (which was the plot base used for Darkseid's appearances in Smallville, but let's not count that against the mini). I thought Wein and Ostrander did a pretty good job of capturing the menace and craftiness of Darkseid rather than just having him be a powerful big bad who hits things.

At the risk of Blasphemy, Darkseid was such a boring character in the Kirby New Gods books. He never seemed to fight or show his power except for eye beams. That's why Thanos is a vastly superior villian. Thanos has mixed it up , and won, against the top Marvel heroes.
