I'm surprised Ditko's name hasn't come up yet. He seemed to love the form and used it more effectively than most in multiple genres. And as much as I dislike the objectivist ideas in The Avenging World, it's a masterful use of comics and imagery to convey (though often oversimplify) complex ideas. Yes, the art in many of those self-published projects Ditko did from the 1980s onward is often lovely, with beautifully designed panels and pages. But yeah, to promote the 'philosophy' of objectivism... There's also the problem of anything fully scripted by Ditko, whether actual dialogue or just text boxes: it's kind of dry and tedious. I think it's telling that the absolutely best Mr. A story is the one with no dialogue or captions.
