Nothing to offer on this one. It's been a long time since I watched it, and your commentary sounds about right.

While there aren't many episodes that I recall from the first season, I do recall two of the three episodes coming next. "Move Along Home" was, by far, the most obnoxious episode of the entire season, and "The Nagus" was pretty good; it got the ball rolling on a few of the more endearing/lighthearted things about DS9 that really progressed and blossomed throughout the series.

I love Jake as a character. He is the anti-Wesley Crusher. A fairly normal kid who comes into his own through getting into writing (and not obsessing on STARFLEET IS THE WAY). He is probably the most relatable person from all of the Trek series. I love the episode where he is trying to do some war reporting and freaks out and runs away. We usually never see stuff like that happen on Trek.

I never felt that way. I don't think he really comes into his own until the last 2 or 3 seasons. I also love his relationship with his father. Probably the only warm father/son relationship we see in all of Trek. I can see how Nog would overshadow him a bit, I felt that way at 1st. I didn't really like Jake until I had watched the show all the way through a few times. Kira is another character I disliked on my 1st watch through and now she is probably my favorite character.

I'm interested to see Jake actually be a character... 8 episodes in, he's only appeared in 3, and has less than 10 minutes total screen time, I think. He's more a prop to prove Sisko's a nice guy so far. Ep. 8 'The Passenger' Kira and Bashir find a disabled ship transporting a passenger, and try to assist, to no avail. Only one person survives, and she's absolutely paranoid that her prisoner, a really, really, bad man, is really dead. Meanwhile, Odo tells Quark a valuable Duridium shipment (which that particular race uses to lengthen their lives) is on the way. While Odo bickers with Starfleet Security, the guy apparently in, in fact, not really dead, and is, in fact, working with Quark. He was able to transfer his consciousness into the cop chasing him, which Dax figures out. As Dax closes in, the bad guy jumps his brain into Bashir, but the Starfleet Security guy defies Odo and finds how he planned to disable the station...a bit too late. Using Bashir, the bad guy steals the runabout and attacks the shipment... but can't get away... leading to a standoff. Dax saves the day again, managing to disrupt the body snatcher long enough to let Bashir take his body back and lower the transports shields, then they somehow beam the bad guy out of him. They return custody of the, er, data, I guess, to the policewoman chasing him, and she disintigrates it. The End. Comments: -- Bashir gives a nice speech about how great he is... pretty funny... especially considering what happens next. I hope he gets to rise above being a complete joke at some point. -- I agree with the Starfleet guy.. Odo telling Quark about a valuable shipment is pretty dumb. The fact Quark was, indeed, involved should have some reprecussions, assuming they know -- Dax definitely gets the showcase here, to show us how important she is... she still can't act, though. -- Do they ever explain why the Runabout is named the Rio Grande? While I get the reference, I find it hard to believe that anyone in Starfleet would. And besides, when the Rio Grande was stationed there, there was no worm hole, thus no border to the Gamma Quadrant... *sigh* -- Body Snatching seems very 60s sci-fi.. it felt weird to see it in a 'modern' Trek show. Overall, I decent but forgettable and probably unimportant episode... hopefully they'll get better soon

-- Bashir gives a nice speech about how great he is... pretty funny... especially considering what happens next. I hope he gets to rise above being a complete joke at some point. Yes, he does. Unfortunately, they also provide a significant retcon on him that absolutely does not jibe with the earlier episodes. You write this as if you're expecting it to change All runabouts aboard DS9 are named after rivers on Earth. "Move Along Home" will be outright terrible, "The Nagus" is fun and establishes the lighter aspects of DS9 that will become thoroughly endearing as the seasons progress, and "Duet" is one of the finest Trek episodes ever. Beyond that, I remember nothing from the remainder of the season. [/quote]

I guess I've viewing in joyful hope that Dax will get better If they are all rivers, that's fine (a theme, at least).. I assumed they were going for the border thing.

Yes, he does. Unfortunately, they also provide a significant retcon on him that absolutely does not jibe with the earlier episodes. How do you figure it doesn't jibe? Thereally areally countless scenarios where he doesn't possess knowledge and/or insights that he should have had according to the revelation in question. You could buy that he's just playing dumb except that there are multiple examples where this occurred when he was alone, or, worse yey, the scene was shown from his perspective.

Do you recall any specifically?

I wasn't sure if it didn't jibe with his revelation in Distant Voices or if it made it better. Obviously, it didn't make the series better as it gave us the geniuses.
I'm sorry you don't like Dax, yet. She's definitely my favorite Star Trek character. Her starring episodes aren't as good as anyone else's, though. I always thought she was funny.
I always liked Jake, but I started to really appreciate him after The Visitor.

Do you recall any specifically? As we've discussed quite a bit in the other Trek thread, it's hard to recall individual DS9 episodes since season one was so forgettable and the rest blurred into major arcs. In essence, while I recall watching episodes where this occurred, I don't recall the specifics.

I always liked Jake, but I started to really appreciate him after The Visitor. I like Dax as a character, too... it's a really cool concept. The actress is so wooden, it's hard to see past that. That's why I keep hoping she'll grow into the role more (despite Shax and others assuring me she doesn't) It seems like she's supposed to have more character and personality than your typical Trek Science Officer, but the poor acting makes her almost seem like she's emotionless.

Do you recall any specifically? I suspect once I get to it I'll be all over it
