Well, you've said before you don't like O'Brien, and he was the main focus, so that's probably why. It is pretty forgettable, unless that diplomat girl comes back (which seems slightly possible, but not likely).

Well, you've said before you don't like O'Brien, and he was the main focus, so that's probably why. O'Brien did have a few great moments. He had at least one episode devoted to him that I adored in which he is tortured in a Cardassian prison and is haunted by the memories afterward. Don't remember what that episode was called, but I'm pretty sure it's in Season 3. Of course, that episode unabashedly explored O'Brien's dark side. it didn't try to paint him as a hero. O'Brien is just pretty damn unlikable. Pretty sure she doesn't.

I don't think he's unlikeable, exactly, he's just an old Curmudgeon

Also, it sounds like you're combining the episode in which he was tried on Cardassia with the episode in which some random alien of the week locked him in mind prison for relative decades.

ep. 14 Progress
DS9 is helping the Bajorans with an energy project, all is well, except for some squatters in the area... Kira beams down to chat with them.
She finds a farming family that's not really going anywhere...despite Kira's best sales pitch.
Meanwhile, Nog's Uncle buys too much Cardassian Yamack sauce, and Nog tries to fix it by making a deal with a wandering trader... then they make a another deal to trade for land from a Bajoran....not sure where this is going...
Kira returns from dinner and tries to save the old guy's farm, and gets send back with guards to take the guy by force. They resist, and the old guy gets shot. Bashir goes down to make sure the guy's OK, and seems to go native. Sisko has to go and tell her she's not an underdog anymore.
Turns out the land they got was needed by the government... so they scored after all. Though why the Bajoran sold them land when the government wanted it is kinda silly. They don't actually say how it works out, though... maybe next time .
In the end, Kira helps the guy finish building a kiln, then destroys it, and his house when he says he won't leave as long as it's standing. They beam up to the station... the End!
Thoughts:
Kira and Dax talking about men seemed really out of place to me... they haven't been shown as particular close (or even that they like each other) before this.
I LOVE the Bajoran farmer and his homey yet demeaning comments... which he's doing on purpose to piss Kira off.. once she figures it out he switches to homey-grandfather.
Kira's conflict between duty and her soul is very, very interesting....she gets a great talk from Sisko, even if he acts like her father, it was still a good speech.
I'm not sure what they were going for with the Nog stuff, but they failed...it was really Jake that bailed him out, and the whole thing was just illogical
I really hope the farmer comes back some time.. Kira said she wanted him to be her friend on Bajor, after all. 1/2 this episode was very good, the other 1/2 a bit head scratching, but I'll take it.

And this is coming from a person who is a regular on Trekbbs. I'd love to hear why! He has always been a big favorite of mine. Now Keiko on the other hand.....

Yes, two separate episodes. There are several good "let's torture O'Brien" episodes throughout the series.

He has always been a big favorite of mine. Now Keiko on the other hand..... What's to like? The forced buddy relationship later in the series aside (no spoilers for Wildfire ), he's a perpetual grouch and complainer who blows up at the drop of the hat, isn't particularly funny, clever, brilliant, nor heroic, and often comes off like a lousy father to boot. Plus there was the whole Next Gen episode where he confronted his own racism about "Cardies". Realistic and understandable, but absolutely not likable.

She finds a farming family that's not really going anywhere...despite Kira's best sales pitch. I vaguely recall this episode, and I think I vaguely liked it. That struggle always makes for great Kira stories, particularly in the early seasons. I think, every time you hope someone comes back again, my answer has pretty much always been the same. Season One is pretty forgettable and, thus, isn't often referenced outside of the first episode.

Perhaps it would have been less forgettable if they brought a couple of these cool characters back

Ep. 15 If Wishes were Horses Quark and Odo chat during a slow day.. they're fun as usual, but it's the same conversation. They go around the station and show everyone else doing regular stuff, too. When they get to O'Brien reading his daughter a story, it turns out somehow Rumplestiltskin is REALLY in her room. Then other stuff starts coming true. It's apparently a subspace anomaly that exploded a planet last time it appeared, so the bridge staff go about trying to fix it while their halucinations taunt/annoy/amuse them. The mains ones (Rumple, Submissive Dax, and the baseball player) have a meeting, and decide not to 'give up' yet. The Bridge crew decide the best course of action is to do exactly what happened last time, and hope it works this time. Big Shocker, it doesn't work... Rumple offered to save the day, if O'Brien gives up his daughter. Sisko suddenly realizes that the problems started when Dax 'imagined' it was a subspace rupture, and the rest was a self-fufilling prophecy. He convinces everyone else, and everything goes back to normal. The baseball player comes back, and reveals they are aliens that are trying to figure out what imagination is... he leaves without telling Sisko anything but 'appreciate imagination'. Thoughts: Quark talking about essentially Disneyworld was fun. Funny how the baseball name dropping is only guys that are very old and undisputable, or made up future players... I'm thinking they were trying not to date the show, but it seems weird to go from the 1920s to the 40s to some time far in the future... OK, I guess he's supposed to be the last great player, that makes a BIT more sense. O'Brien's daughter!! First Appearance! She's cute ... I thought she was supposed to be a baby though, not a toddler(maybe 3ish), but perhaps I'm just mistaken. Keiko is back, too, for the first tme in a while. Bashir's fantasy of having Dax come on to him, and having him flip out, is really funny, but just re-enforces his annoying character.. especially when the real Dax shows up. OTOH, why is Quark's fantasy human women? That's WAY down the list based on his previous characterization... he should have been swimming in the DS9 equivalent of Scrooge's money bin, with lackeys all around. Among many illogical things, Odo fixation of the Ostrich/Chicken thing that someone conjures is very illogical indeed. Sure, he SAYS he's doing other stuff, but we only see him herding. I did spent the majority of the episode wondering why no one just wished everything was fine... not just the crew, but the passengers or, say, Keiko.... that's essential what worked, but we're supposed to believe no one thought that subconsciously before Sisko figured it out? Stuff like this never works.. that goes for TV and Comics. Yet another episode where they tease that it'll be important in the future... I hope this one isn't, though. Ugh. Silly premise, and not particularly good execution.

I may have already posted this, but it's worth repeating.. all of you DS9 fans out there should pick of the 'Q Gambit'.. it's issues 35-40 of the current Star Trek series. It features the movie versions of the TOS crew getting sent into an alternate future where the Dominion defeat the Federation, and the Klingons rule Earth. The DS9 crew are the main backbone of the remnants of the Federation.. it's pretty good, and I'm just they'll be a trade in not too long.

Always fascinating to see how people can see a character so differently. I never saw O'Brien as a grouch. He's more of an old school no nonsense kind of guy to me. I can see that he's not so much funny. But he also seems to be the go to nuts and bolts guy who can come up with stuff and fix problems that even Dax can't. Don't get the lousy father part at all, he always doted on his kids. I do see Keiko as a horrible wife and mother on the other hand.. On the Bashir friendship...well maybe it's a little overdone but I liked it. I think O'Brien and Jake are two of the best views of sort of regular guys in the series. Interesting that you don't like either of them. Everyone on DS9 seems broken to a certain extent. Even Sisko engages in several illegal and morally reprehensible acts. I guess that's part of why it's interesting. I'm curious to see if your views will ever change on this. I initially hated Kira with a passion. Over the years (next time I watch the show it will be the 7th watch through) she grew to be one of my favorites.
