Well, the Captain Marvel that was introduced in the early 70's was goofy as all get out. A superhero with an alter ego of a 13 year old just doesn't fly. The age of comic fans is probably 25-60 at this point and they can't relate. I don't think you have to personally relate in order to enjoy, but Kurt's point about it just not being right for the tone of the DCU is apt. Captain Marvel Family on its own = awesome, but it's hard to make it work in a shared universe full of gritty, nuanced heroes I don't want to read Captain Marvel playing cards with a seal...

I don't want to read Captain Marvel playing cards with a seal... That sounds awesome! I’ve never seen it. Where can I find it? It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure it's "His Loneliest Day" from Captain Marvel Adventures #49: And yes. It's awesome.

Thanks, shax! I’m going to read it right now on Comic Book Plus.

It’s not on Comic Book Plus. But I did find it elsewhere online. He doesn’t play poker with a seal. That must be another story. However, in this one, he does play 900 games of solitaire, but that’s boring after a while, so he goes and rounds up some Arctic animals, like a seal, a polar bear and a walrus, and trains them to do circus tricks.
Also ... penguins. In the Captain Marvel Universe, there are penguins in the Arctic.
It’s pretty awesome!

It’s not on Comic Book Plus. (...) Yeah, on the original Fawcett Captain Marvel and Marvel family comics in general, it was a case of getting while the getting was good at both Comic Book Plus and the Digital Comic Museum. Both sites took down almost all of that material a few years ago because it turned out it was not public domain after all (or DC's lawyers figured out a way to retroactively assert some kind of copyright claims, can't remember exactly, but it kind of sucks either way).

Taking those stories down is the high of pettiness. Who's going to use those stories anyway ?

I may well have invented the poker bit. My memory tends to get "creative" like that. Yes. I really need to pull it out and read it again!

I'm definitely a fan of the new sound effects so far

Rereading Crisis leading up to this I was amazed at how much I hated the dialog and pacing, where as I think when I last read this like twenty years ago I think I bought into the sheer size of the story and enjoyed it because of its scope more so than the actual story itself. I still like the concept of the multiverse and a threat from "outside" the universe that could rearrange the world as we knew it...but the execution wasn't as great as the image in my head. In some ways, I think Convergence which was just a place holder event from a few years ago did it a lot better even if it felt a little bit of a retread simply because Crisis already existed.

Listening your tinfoil hat theory shaxper I think I have to agree with you, with the reaction from the creative people leaving Marvel because of how Jim Shooter wanted to do things I think perhaps the powers that be at DC didn't want to see the same thing happen to them and perhaps got a little bit of cold feet with Crisis.

In hindsight, I wonder if my tinfoil hat theory and George's don't work together. Had Shooter not fallen out of favor, Wolfman might have risen to be DC's Jim Shooter.

It's pretty obvious that was the goal, it just seems like he wasn't allowed to achieve it and like the earlier "Big Bang" theory I have to wonder if it might have been more interesting if it did happen. What if we had gotten a more cohesive new universe? I guess we did eventually get that with the Nu52 after Flashpoint, with all new #1's and continuity and it was pretty successful for DC around 2011 but it wasn't healthy long term. Would it have led to more long term sales in the 80's though when comics were more relevant? We'll never know.
