Whoops. I've got some catching up to do. Day 4 - Uncle ScroogeFirst Appearance - Four Color Comics 178 Series I'm talking about - Don Rosa's Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Okay, look. I never got into Disney. First Disney animated movie I saw was either Snow White or Cinderella (honestly don't remember), and that was the day after my senior prom, cause my date wanted to go. As far as cartoons go, I always preferred Daffy to Donald. And as far as comics, I started with superheroes, and that's what I bought for myself. But every Sunday the folks would go visit the grandparents, and I'd get dragged along. My grandfather always had some comics laying around, knowing I'd need something to do. They were usually Disney, but since they were the only option I'd read them. Didn't care for most of them; the sitcom style shenanigans just didn't appeal. But every once in a while, there'd be a different story. Sometimes longer, more adventure than dumb gags; those stood out. Not enough to make me seek them out, though. Years went by, and I learned about the 'good duck artist' and how well regarded his stories were. I shrugged, dismissed it as nostalgia, and went on with my superheroes. But when I heard that Don Rosa was taking the many stories Carl Barks had done and weaving them into one chronological chronicle, the continuity freak in me was sucked in, and I picked up a couple of issues. And I really was surprised by how much I enjoyed them. These weren't just a string of jokes; there were plots, adventure, and the development of Scrooge, a character I came to root for despite knowing of him as a skinflint and miserly, well, Scrooge. I know that Rosa was working off of the original stories by Barks. All due respect to the master, but this is the version that hooked me.

I now have to win a Slammie this Christmas Season! Hopefully I can pull out something that'll make this happen This is the initial year for the Slammies. Because I just thought about it on the fly. There are absolutely no criteria whatsoever. Because, why would there be? So you mean I won the very first Slammie ever? I feel so special.

9. Black Canary1st appearance: Flash Comics #86 Choice run: Adventure Comics #416, 418-419 Black Canary has had a number of solo or feature runs over the course of her long existence, including a run in World's Finest, her own title several times, and Birds of Prey. But my pick is her brief run in Adventure Comics. After having her 1st appearance reprinted in #416, she got an all-new 2-part story in #418 and #419 with unparalleled art by Alex Toth. Unbeatable!

9. Black Widow in Marvel Fanfare Will expand later but mostly for the Perez artwork.
edit:
As is often the case with these old comics, it's been so long since I last read them that I don't remember too many details about the writing in this 4-issue story. But it's probably the best rendition of the character ever, for me - certainly in those BW comics that take more of a superhero direction, as opposed to the more straightforwardly espionage stories she sometimes appeared in, e.g. the ones Paul Gulacy drew in Marvel Preview. In those appearances, she was much more realistically drawn, and Gulacy gave her a more slender, svelte physique. But in this superhero yarn, Perez made her look big and powerful, without being over-muscled or mannish, so that her ability to battle with super-powered opponents felt plausible (within the fantastical conventions of the superhero genre), a very basic concept that too many superhero artists don't get, which I've always found puzzling.
(PS: To be honest, if I had been on the ball enough to realise that Tales of Asgard qualified as a spin-off it would have been one of my twelve picks and BW might well have been the one I'd have dropped to make room for it. OTOH, when the topic was first announced this is one of the first series that came to mind, so it is in no way undeserving of its place here on my list. )

I'm surprised we haven't seen Black Canary appear before now, but I'm also surprised at how many characters I've forgotten were spin-offs, as Black Canary was from the Johnny Thunder feature ( not the Alex Toth JT!).

Im pretty sure the single issues were 2012 and the collection My Life As A Weapon was 2013. Sorry was just my way of specifying which era of Hawkeye I was preferring.
