I understand the rules of this year's 12 days, and I made every effort to abide by them in my own choices, but in my mind there is no way Supergirl is not a spin-off of Superman. Needless to say, I fully endorse the 'exception.'

Day 5 - Fantastic ForceFirst appearance - Franklin in Fantastic Four Annual #6, Huntara in Fantastic Four #377 Series ran for 18 issues, 1994-6 Remember - personal picks, not the best. So the Fantastic Four was a solid favorite of mine. And so many of the characters introduced in that book were spun-off into their own books, the FF basically gave birth to the Marvel Universe. But they'd never had a second team spin out of the group. The Avengers had the West Coast team, Force Works, the Great Lakes team. There were about 73 different X-Teams. But by the 90's it was clear that the FF were no longer the focus of the company. Then this book happened. The original line-up all had ties to the original team. Franklin was Reed and Sue's son, who'd grown up in another dimension or something. Huntara was Reed's sister. (He's apparently had at least one more, but she was first.) Then there was an Inhuman and a Wakandan. I'm guessing that this bunch didn't set the world on fire, since later issues brought in the Black Panther, the Torch, and She-Hulk. Was the book any good? It was a 90's super-team, what do you think? Lots of busy artwork, lots of fighting (between the team members and against the bad guys), not a lot of character development, complex plot, nuance, quiet moments, imagination. But just the fact that this book existed, that the FF finally got a second team, felt like a kind of vindication to me. I felt a responsibility to support the book, y'know? Probably just as well it didn't last too long.

#8. Squadron SupremeThis one, I'll confess holds a very special place in my heart because of the historical context in which I was reading it. I was grabbing this series every month from a local newsagent and, for a year, my friend Michael and I had ONE topic of conversation... "What the HELL is going to happen next?" I never got the chance to read 'Watchmen' as it came out and, to be honest, at 15 years old, I probably wouldn't have been equipped to deal with it properly, but this came along at exactly the right time for both of us to lose our minds with each twist and turn, and speculate endlessly about what this would mean and where this would lead and what the hell were the characters going to do?
