My hat's off to you for actually publishing something, mrp. I've been accumulating material for the past 40 years but the closest I got to putting my stuff out is make a few photocopies that I sent to friends. Dave Sim would probably kick my behind and say that it's useless to make comics that nobody ever reads! Such as they are, my comics can be divided as follows: The orion arm, a space opera that now counts two 46-pages graphic novels, one short story, and twenty-odd pages of a third volume. A few friends from CBR have read it, but I am depressingly indecisive when it comes to actual publication. Here are a few samples.    Another series titled Clone was a sword-and-sorcery comedy in which a dying wizard creates a copy of himself to get revenge on the knight who just struck him down. The problem is that the clone is a perfectly innocent creature who simply doesn't understand the concept of revenge and basically just wants to be nice to everyone. That's one of the few things I actually finished! I also have a detective story starring a bear, Barrington, created by my late sister. That one's been stuck in limbo for way too long.  That sci-fi comic looks seriously impressive. I'd totally buy that if I saw it on the rack. |

For those that wanted a closer look at the borders of the page I posted earlier, I do have the scanned version now..  I also have a scan of the last of the 4 coloring book pages I did...  now onto lettering and inking phases on those pages and starting the page breakdown for the second page of The Chase. In other studio news, I found us a new printer this past week that will halve our printing costs, and have a meeting Monday to finalize a deal that will give us a 8 foot long 2 foot deep showcase to display and sell our books and prints at a local antique/collectible mall sponsored by one of the comic dealers there (who is the son of the mall owners). We will be doing a signing there one of the next 2 Sundays to promote the new arrangement and take advantage of the holiday shopping volume there. I've been working hard the last few months to improve our infrastructure, to find more outlets to sell the books and ways to reduce production costs to make us more viable, so things on that end are starting to come together a little more, and we are making significant progress on getting the next round of books ready to go to print). Fingers crossed, we're hoping 2015 is a productive year for us, things are in place to make it possible, we just need to execute. -M |

So I spent a good chunk of the day setting up the new Twilight Star Studios showcase at the Springfield Antique Center (a hybrid antique mall/flea market) run by some folks we know whose son runs Zack Attack Comics out of the center. They are trying to help build the comic scene here in Springfield and offered us a showcase to display our stuff for sale and promote it. They handle all the retail aspects for a small commission, all we do is make and deliver the product! There's lots of comics and comic related stuff throughout the center, one of the showcases in our aisle had a ton of westerns and Airboy comics from the 40s and 50s for sale for instance. Here's some pics of the Showcase after I set it up, Amy stopped by after she got out of work to check it out and give her stamp of approval Amy in front of the Showcase...  A promo poster the studio made in its early days....  Some TSS comics for sale...  sets of the first three issues of Cygann (one of the titles I edit) for sale  Our most recent release, The Art of Twilight Star for sale...  some prints and magnets we made of our stuff for sale...  some prints and bookmarks we made form Amy's art for sale (the Bleach was a commission studio-head Gary did and Amy colored, but we retained ability to make prints)  more prints of Amy's stuff for sale  and a few more prints of Amy's stuff  I'm still working on getting our books into a few more LCS (there are about a half dozen who carry or have carried our stuff, all in the Miami Valley and we are looking to expand into the Columbus area) and I am working on setting up digital distribution for the books too. I just found a new printer last week that is more indy/self-publisher friendly so we can tailor print runs to our needs better that will let us get some older stuff back in print and get a better price on newer books to cut our production costs allowing us to print more books, so 2015 looks like a busy year for us. You sent me a PDF of that way back on CBR, it was a fantastic and promising introduction to the character and the supporting cast. If you had put that out in 1983 it would have a line of toys and a cartoon by now. |

I saw that Medusa piece on deviatnART and thought the detail of the individual snake heads was really impressive. She did a lot of research/reference for that, looking up several different types of snakes and picking the ones who had scale texture she liked to include in the hair. It took a lot of time; she estimates she spent around 40 hours just doing the snakes. I like all of her stuff, but that is one of my favorite pieces that she has done. The color version is the original composition, the black and white one in the picture is a revised version she did for the Art of Twilight Star book. The original was drawn by hand, several years back, but then when we launched the studio we scanned in all that art, and the revision was created digitally, which is the medium she usually works in now. -M |
