Journey into Mystery #105June 1964 "The Cobra and Mr. Hyde!" Commentary: I think they are doing a pretty good job of making this conflict almost believable, despite the fact that they are really not in Thor's league. Cobra and Hyde are not cream puffs. And notice, they aren't really tangling with Thor that much. They are threatening Dr. Blake. Then they are threatening Jane. The fights with Thor are short. Then they catch him by surprise with a mechanical arm at the exposition! Who expects an atomic-powered hydraulic hoist? I'll tell you. Nobody expects an atomic-powered hydraulic hoist! I've always loved this two-part story! I think I've said that before. I'm so happy that it holds up so well. Commentary:I love the pages Involving the Original Avengers. Lots of coincidences kind of mar the story, but Silver age goofiness will stay around for another couple of years- The Cobra just happens to crawl into another super villain's apartment. Hyde taps the cane and Blake transforms into Thor? Does this mean anytime ANYONE taps the cane he will change? What if he's a mile away, does he change? Jane, Hyde and Cobra were all looking out the window during the transformation? Ugg. The issue is left as a cliffhanger , is this the first One for the series? Hyde seems to have significant scientific talent, whereas we are led to believe in the previous stories that he was just a hack. That machine that show someones movement backwards is problematic. Putting aside that its crap, what happened to that device? Why isn't it in use all the time? Why doesn't he patent it and sell it ? Plus , we probably never see it again. That device reminds me that the Silver Surfer had a similar power that he used in the FF Byrne run to ascertain where Reed was when he was abducted by the Shiar. The Tales of Asgard story was forgettable.

Tales of Asgard: "When Heimdall Failed!" This is one of the best Tales of Asgard. I really like the George Roussos inking. That's a sentence you don't often see.

I really like the texture that he gives to the stories. It doesn’t always work if the story doesn’t really fit. But I read something like the big Thing-Hulk fight in FF #25 and #26, and it looks like they are raising a lot of dust! And Hulk and Thing look covered in mud the whole fight! Chic Stone inking Kirby is like stained glass. New Look Moldoff is like marionettes thrown on the ground. George Roussos is like watching in a magic pool.

He is a little to loose and scratchy for me. But to be fair, he often had a short turn around time on inking assignments.
One of the interesting aspects of Rousos' inking is that he really pushed the rocky look for the Thing. Kirby originally drew him with a dinosaur like skin. But inkers slowly made him lumpier and a little rockier. But Rousos really wen all in on the rocky look. Eventually Kirby drew him that way.

Journey into Mystery # 106
" The Thunder God strikes back !"( This is a picture of my actual copy of this issue) Writer Stan Lee Artist:Jack Kirby Artist Inks:Chic StonePlot summary:At the end of the last issue, Thor was deprived of his Hammer by a machine used by Hyde and the Cobra. After trying to subdue the duo, he runs out of the 60 second time limit and its forced to run into the crowd and hide. He appears as Blake and tells Hyde that he will help him find Thor if he retrieves his walking cane which was accidentally caught inside the grappler machine. Hyde tears the machine apart and gives Blake the cane and he transforms into Thor after running into the crowd as not to be seen. He takes them both on capturing the Cobra but Hyde escapes by turning himself into Dr. Zorbo. Later on Zorbo trails Thor in order to take him on , thinking that the hammer is the source of his superiority. Thor fight and defeats Hyde without using his hammer. CommentsDecent slugfest with a lot of Silver age flaws. At the end, Jane leaves Blake because he seemingly betrayed Thor during the confrontation with the duo. Cool Moment: Maybe the most macho and coolest moment in the Thor series to date- Thor does not use his hammer in order to kick Hydes @$$ hand to hand. It was truly a great moment and maybe saves this so-so book. The Cobra shows an ability like he can stretch. Maybe a manifestation of his powers? Silly momentsSigh, there's more than a few- 1. Thor runs into a crowd of people but nobody notices that he turns into a regular man 2.The Grappler machine takes the hammer away from Thor but no one questions where the Hammer is or why a cane is inside instead. 3. Hyde takes his formula to blend into the crowd in order to escape and transforms into a man with glasses and regular street clothes. Where did his Hyde suit go and where did he get Zorbos clothing and glasses ? 4. When Hyde is beaten by Thor, he is taken into custody by the police and is put in handcuffs and restraints. There's no way those bindings could hold him and what jail will hold him ? 5. Thor pulls up a street and uses it like it's a carpet to knock the pair off their feet. I will quote Hoosier X , "Comics are dumb!" Tales of Asgard
Lee/ Kirby and Introducing the marvelous inks of VINCE COLLETTA!" Balder the Brave"Balder is accused of temporarily deserting Asgards forces during battle and he admits to seeing a bird fallen from its nest and rendering aid. An enraged Odin sentences him to face the test of Immortal death. He is attacked by several soldiers by spear and sword but is saved by a bird and a huge plant. Finally Odin orders Thor to throw his Hammer at Balder. As Thor prepares to kill him , Odin puts a stop to the ordeal. It turns out that the bird and tree that saves Balder were doing so at Odin's request. Balder is given the gift of invulnerability that he could only have receive by undergoing this test. This 4 page story saves the book for me.

That part where he leaves the hammer and beats the snot out of Hyde in 60 seconds is the highlight of the Hyde-Cobra story arc in the Thor comics.
I also like that part where the Cobra is squirming around inside the (checks notes again) atomic-powered hydraulic hoist, trying to get a stick. There should be a panel where Cobra or Hyde is scolding Dr. Blake and telling him he needs to keep track of his own damn stick.

Again, this issue has too many instances where occurrences were problematic. Hyde has to comply with Blake’s demand for the cane ? He could snap Blake’s neck in half.

Those of you former CBRizens who remember Tim Morrison a.k.a. fly on the wall may find it interesting that I helped him choose a page from this issue to purchase at San Diego one year. The page didn't have Thor but it did have both Cobra and Hyde and it was yummy. The Kirby/Stone art is so powerful seen on the full-size original!
Cei-U! Those were the days!

I knew that I'd graduated from "new guy" to an accepted member when I was included in a Fly story.

I don't own any originals, but I have the Kirby Thor Artist Edition which has more than a few nice examples of Kirby-Stone original art in full size.
With this as Colletta's first time inking this book it is interesting to compare his style with Stone. Stone is all bold, thick lines, and Colletta is still using thin pen lines for a very different look. He would later use bolder brush outlines when he took over full inking duties for the book. But at first he seems to be sticking with pen lines.

Everyone knows that concrete is flexible and will roll in waves, if you hold it at one end and snap it. The only difference between concrete and a rug is texture.

Uh guys, Thor clearly states it is "Steel flooring". Now outside of an aircraft carrier, I have never seen steel flooring, but I guess this place has it.

That third panel, where Cobra and Hyde are being flipped around like bath toys, it’s hilarious.
Yeah, it’s not the street. It’s inside the convention center. Or whatever this place is where they are having this machinery exhibit. They would’ve chosen a venue where they could show off all this heavy machinery. A place with steel floors. Perhaps. BECAUSE REASONS.
The Howard Stark Industrial Exposition Center.
It used to be the armory but it was purchased and redesigned as an industry convention center and showplace.
