Has it been explained why a space-faring species like the Kryptonians didn't have colonies on other worlds, or ambassadors, or merchants, or explorers who would all have escaped the destruction of their world? Was it a case of extreme xenophobia? Were Kryptonians, like ancient Egyptians, loathe to stay away from the Nile at the end of their life for religious reasons? I'm not versed on Kryptonian lore, so maybe they weren't really space-farers... they might have had limited interstellar travel capabilities, despite their scientific advances at home. Able to visit other systems, but not in so easy a fashion that it would be a common thing. I'd need an Encyclopedia Kryptonica! I can't speak for post-Crisis developments but in Silver/Bronze Age lore, Krypton's space program had only advanced to the point of exploring the planet's moons despite their advanced technology in other areas. Jor-El was the first to develop a craft capable of interstellar travel and even it (Kal's rocket, of course) required a space warp to reach its destination. Krypton was aware of other worlds, including Earth, but only one man, Superman's great-grandfather Var-El, actually traveled off-planet on what proved to be a one-way trip (see DC Comics Presents #37). This is what I can remember off the top of my head. It'll take someone more steeped in Superman arcana than me to answer the rest of your questions.
Cei-U! I do what I can!

If I recall right, renegade scientist Jax-Ur was testing an illegal nuclear-powered rocket, which was part of a plan to take over Krypton. Due to an error on Jax-Ur's part, the rocket went off-course and collided with a Kryptonian moon named Wegthor, which was colonized by Kryptonians. The moon was destroyed and all the colonists killed. Jax-Ur was sentenced to eternity in the Phantom Zone and the Kryptonian council banned any and all experimentation into spaceflight. So they did take a tentative step into space, even established a colony, but it ended so disastrously they decided to not risk it any further. Also, in the planet's past, they were conquered and enslaved by an alien race called the Vrangs. Other aliens landed on Krypton at various times, but as I recall, every positive instance was countered by at least one horrible one as well. Can't really blame them for not wanting to go into space - it would sound like just courting more trouble. This is, of course, all pre-1986. EDIT: Also what Cei-U said above.

Oh, yeah, good story. I loved those issues of DCCP drawn by Starlin. Otherwise, yeah, Cei-U! and Chris answered far more exhaustively, but I can recall off the top of my head that despite being technologically highly advanced, the Kryptonians were not a spacefaring people.

In Pre-COIE Silver Age it had to do with Jax-Ur destroying Krypton’s moon and they gave up space travel because of it. But in Post Crisis the eradicate artifact genetically altered the population so they couldn’t leave Krypton so they couldn’t leave

Thanks, Cei-U! , Chris and amerigo178!
I'm curious about the post-crisis explanation, though... Why could baby Kal-el live away from Krypton if his compatriots could not? And what about Kandor, did it exist post-crisis?

Thanks, Cei-U! , Chris and amerigo178! I'm curious about the post-crisis explanation, though... Why could baby Kal-el live away from Krypton if his compatriots could not? And what about Kandor, did it exist post-crisis? I think this has to do with Byrne establishing that his Superman was actually born on Earth and not Krypton. As far as Kandor existing Post-Crisis, there was a bottle city owned by a bad guy named Tolos introduced in 1996. It wasn't a Kryptonian city but a collection of various alien races gathered together and kept in the villain's collection. A check online reveals that there was a city on Post-Crisis Krypton named Kandor which was destroyed 1000 years before the planet blew up thanks to a terrorist organization named Black Zero (pre-Crisis Black Zero was the guy who destroyed Krypton though I don't think that story was ever paid attention to after that one-time reveal).
