My entry is this Spectacular Spider-Man cover from Sal's later, self-inking period. Here is what Sal said about that. First, the reason he took over doing all the art on his books is Marvel had him doing up to six books a month, mostly layouts. He thought he was being professional and doing what his employer asked, but found he was getting a rep as a hack. So he asked if he could do fewer books and do pencils and inks. He started using mainly a brush, which was how he usually inked. But at some point he found the Windsor Newton brushes had changed (these are Sable brushes, and not cheap). He found they no longer held the point he needed to ink. At the same time he saw a Bill Sienkiewicz's cover and liked the way he used pens. A bold new style was born. So here is a dramatic cover from his run,

Sal was everywhere when I started reading Marvel and he will always be "my" Avengers/Sub-Mariner/Cap artist. But I appreciate much of his later work too, such as this striking cover from 1988--I especially love his background details here. Spectacular Spider-Man #137 (1988)

My entry is this Spectacular Spider-Man cover from Sal's later, self-inking period. (...) This came after my personal 'golden age' of comics reading, but after seeing quite a bit of it, I like it as much as his earlier work.

My top 2 favourites have already been posted! I know there are plenty more good choices out there of course. I'll just have to think about this a bit longer than I thought I would! Oh, well. Back to the back-issues for me! :

I have to go with chaykinstevens. Avengers annual # 4 is one of the earliest comics I read on my way to my love for the book. It reprinted Avengers 5 and 6 and I read it to death. This week was tough. Sal was great in the 70's and deserves credit along all the other artists for building Marvel.
