I'd say just read The Avengers #1 - 170 or so, but you could stop the explanation with #60 and come away with one of the greatest team book runs ever published, which puts those cartoony MCU Avengers movies to shame.

Also she’ll never read an issue. Kills me to say but its true

But I can see myself changing to #200 if I ever get around to reading George Perez's return to the series. I like his artwork enough that even if the stories are only average those issues could still become favourites.

I can’t imagine not having my Monica Rambeau CM issues of Avengers in the 80’s. And Busiek’s run (including Avengers Forever) would be on my list as well.

My wife knows the MCU much better than I do -- I'm really not a fan of superhero movies, as a rule of thumb. So, on the rare occasions that we talk about comics, we'll usually be comparing notes on differences between the comics and the films.

My spouse got into comics after we were married. She’d come w. me on my weekly trips to the shop and just look around, all bored as I did my thing. Then one day she rushed up to me and said she wanted this one book because it looked cute as Hell. It was an issue of Jeff Smith’s Bone. After that she was hooked, and I knew the marriage would last.

Of course the Busiek stuff and the Ultimates were fun. 300 is my cut off point because that's John Buscema's last regular issue on the run. I consider him the ultimate Avengers artist.

I was impressed that my wife could name the members of the Fantastic Four: "Captain America, Concrete Man, Mr. Stretchy Man, and Mr. Swims-Real-Fast."

My cut-off point for the original Avengers run is #285, the last issue scripted by Roger Stern. Then I jump forward to the Busiek/Perez stuff. I've read everything in between but have no desire to revisit any of it.
Cei-U! I summon the big ol' gap!

I tend to side with 1-200, though there is still some good stories for a bit after; I've just read far more of that bloc than later.
