Thought about making this after seeing a post by J.M. DeMatties that today (9/20) was Steve Gerber's birthday. I first discovered Steve's work ironically enough in 2008 right around the time that he died with the Ty Templeton iteration of Howard. When I got a that HTD Essentials volume for Christmas, I utterly lapped it up. When I started writing my own stories, Steve's work became my guiding rod
As I grew older and delved more into comics, I discovered more of Steve's work, particially Man-Thing and Foolkiller. I don't want to sound like I'm overstating things, but the pair of them might be some of the best comics I've read and ones that I return to frequently
Well, what about you? Who are your favorites?

As a kid, Len Wein and Denny O’Neil always seemed to write my favourite Batman stories.
Byrne was a favourite writer and artist, too.
I really like Curt Swan’s Superman.
So many one could choose!

Writers....Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore are no-brainers. Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis. Current writers...Ed Brubaker and Mark Russell.
Artists...I'm way less of an art guy than a writing guy. Don Newton I will always love. Wally Wood. Currently Sean Phillips, Michael Lark, maybe a few others.

Wally Wood did a good job with Superduperman though.

As a kid I was big into Perez and Starlin, with Steve Englehart being the only writer who I paid attention to. But my tastes have evolved as I have gotten older. Still love Starlin and Perez, and have a nostalgic fondness for their stuff, but they do not top my list of favorites, but are still on it.
My current pantheon of favorite creators includes:
deceased: Frank Frazetta, Joe Kubert, Alex Toth, Darwyn Cooke, Will Eisner, Moebius, Matt Baker, Milton Caniff, Alex Raymond, Al Williamson, Wally Wood, John Buscema, Philippe Druillet, Jack Kirby, Tom Sutton, Gil Kane, Gene Colan, George Perez, Bernie Wrightson, Jeffrey Catherine Jones, Charles Schulz, Tim Sale, Trina Robbins, Carl Barks
still producing work: Stan Sakai, Walt Simonson, Ed Brubaker, Jeff Smith, P. Craig Russell, Kurt Busiek, Alex Ross, Carla Speed McNeil. Greg Rucka, Jim Starlin, Dan Parent, Colleen Doran, Terry Moore, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman. Wendy Pini, Christopher Priest, Eric Shanower, Don Rosa, Scott McCloud, Mike Mignola, Frank Miller, Gary Gianni, Mark Schultz
not in the "pantheon" but up and comers who might get there if they continue as they are-Jim Zub, Rob de la Torre, Chris Samnee, Michael Cho, Nicola Scott, Chris Mooneyham, Stephen Mooney
it's a lot for sure, but creators are the biggest reason I read comics these days. Not characters, not titles, not shared universes, but creators and their craft. And I am sure I am forgetting a few.

I have a lot of respect for Naoki Urasawa, who produced a lot of fun manga in his youth like Yawara!, Master Keaton and Happy! before entering his "mature" phase with masterpieces like Monster and 20th Century Boys. One of the great storytellers in modern manga. Rumiko Takahashi's work also brings me a lot of joy. Kentaro Miura was my all-time favorite mangaka, but he's no longer with us.
In Western comics, I have gravitated towards Brian K. Vaughan's writing and Terry Moore's world building. Present day creators whose work I would always read include David Lapham, Eric Shanower, the Hernandez Brothers, Dan Clowes, Charles Burns, and Gary Spencer Millidge.

This is tough for me to answer as my favourites have usually been fleeting- the quality of a creator's output tends to vary a great deal through their career. So I could say Frank Miller was my favourite writer and artist pre-'99, or Byrne was awesome until about '83. Busiek was great in the late 90s. Klaus Janson's inking is often fascinating to examine, but has gone through better and worse phases.
