I mentioned earlier that I ordered Detective Comics #416 (with a Man-Bat story written and drawn by Frank Robbins, a Batgirl backup, and some old reprints, including a Rex the Wonder Dog story that's set in a circus!) and The Incredible Hulk #160 featuring Tiger Shark. That order came today! I didn't mention earlier that I got an old issue of Action Comics. My nephew's 13th birthday is coming up and, as he's a Supergirl fan, I got a low-grade copy of Action #296, with a Supergirl backup, an early appearance of Lena Thorul, Lex Luthor's sister. I was planning on getting my nephew an issue of Action with Supergirl on the cover, but I came across Action #296 at the right price while browsing eBay. LOOK AT THAT! "THE INVASION OF THE SUPER-ANTS!" It's one of many Action covers that I've seen over the years that make you go "I have to read that to see how that scene could ever actually happen!" So I got some good stuff for the weekend. I thought the highlight would certainly be "The Invasion of the Super-Ants!" But after flipping through these issues, I think the highlight is very likely to be Rex the Wonder Dog. The title of the story is "Rex - Circus Detective!" and it's written by Robert Kanigher with art by Alex Toth and Sy Barry. NICE COVER!! Did you know there is a Superman action figure that is based on Curt Swans art & has an interchangeable ant head? Here is a pic of it...

Here is another good book... I have it! I got it at a used-book store in the 1970s for 25 cents. I keep a mini-library on the nightstand next to my bed, several comics that are so great that I love them no matter how many times I read them. The three permanent comics in the library are a very beat-up copy of The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, the Millennium Edition reprint of Batman #1 and DC Special #16. They're all good stories. Titano is great! The Living Beast Bomb is a weird delight. Great Ross Andru art on the Wonder Woman story. But that Flash story is special! One of my favorite Flash stories. Grodd runs for governor! One of the reason I think Central City is Cincinnati is that the near-election of a gorilla to be governor sounds like something that a bunch of Buckeyes would do, just for the laughs.

I have this issue on my "watch list" on eBay, tempted to use the "buy it now" option to get it. I do not remember this particular comic, just the other 50 cent book (of the same name) that you recently said you just purchased. Are they identical or are the stories different?

The stories are totally different. I checked the Comic Book Database to see which stories were in Super-Heroes Battle Super-Gorilla #1 before I ordered it. Wayne Boring Superman! Infantino Flash! And I'm not sure who drew The Gorilla Boss of Gotham City. I've only read the Superman story so far. Bonkers!

So, Amazon did me a real solid, and they made sure one of my Fantagraphics books arrived a day early. But, not to be negative, it was volume 2. This is the second time they have done this. They try so hard, though. Hydroman! This character was an idea from one of Everett's friends. He did not want to create the character because he thought it to be the most ridiculous idea ever, but his friend talked him into it. So! He named the character's real name after the friend who gave him the idea. But just the first name as to avoid having to pay royalties. lol. Classic Everett mouth on this guy. <3 Yes, I think I am going to love these books a bunch.

I think I may have a problem. I'm pretty sure I have a problem. I hate Superman. Especially Silver-Age Superman. But I just bought... Superman: The Silver Age Newspaper Dailies Volume 1: 1959-1961At $7.75 (total with shipping) I can't pass up a strip reprint book. Especially one from IDW. I definitely have a problem.

I love the Silver Age, so this looks like something I should pick up. Pretty cool price! I guess I'll find out when I buy the book, but I'm wondering if those daily strips re-used the same material, or at least the plots, from the comic books, as the "The Superman From The Future" on the book's cover is like this Action #256 issue, published in 1959. Here's the--er-interesting Action cover:

It's sort of like reading alternate versions of a lot of those stories seeing as how the comic version might have used Plastino or Schaffenberger or Boring on the art and here you get to see what they look like drawn by Curt Swan.

I got this in the mail: I was worried this would be a real mess, but it's intact, connected at the staples, no coupons cut out, no water damage, no weird smell. The pages are browning a little bit and there's a tear on the upper spine. $15 was a little too much for it, but it's not as bad as I thought it might be. I also got this: There's an big "8" written in grease pencil between Clayface and Batman but otherwise this is really very nice for $12. Really bright pages, a really solid book. Second appearance of Zook! I'll probably be writing these up on the Batman fan thread in a few days.

I also got Detective Comics #458 and Legion of Super-Heroes #263 to #275, including: That sequence where Blok betrays his former teammates and joins the LSH! I vaguely remember that Blok was a member of the League of Super-Assassins and maybe I read a few of those issues at my friend's house circa 1980. But it will be cool to read those issues. I love Titania from her Legion of Super-Villains stint, and I hope to see a little more of her in these issues.

Interesting IMO, how often back then Robin was usually positioned at the bottom sides of the covers, with his hand up--as shown here.
