I was looking at Detective #310 on eBay today. I think it's Bat-Mite's last appearance in Detective Comics for about 15 years. (It's reasonably priced in low- to mid-grade and I will likely buy it in the next week or so. I love Bat-Mite.) But eBay has that column for "Related items - auctions ending" or whatever, and there was a mid-grade Detective #372 for $4.99 - and nobody had bid on it - and the auction was ending in a minute! So I looked at it, checked the grade, looked at the photo, looked at the postage and tried to bid on it, but my computer locked up! I finally got my bid in with less than ten seconds to go. It's one I don't have. Looks pretty solid. Neal Adams cover! Even with $4 or $5 postage, this looks like a pretty good deal!

This arrived in the post the other day: a slightly family friendly version in that Barbarella had her boobs touched up (fnar fnar!) for the more family friendly film tie-in edition (the middle image here) but good stuff all the same.

Had one of the most interesting experiences I've ever had as a comics collector this past weekend. I'd seen an ad on Craigslist earlier in the week from a guy who claimed to have around 800K comics in a warehouse just north of Pittsburgh, so I reached out to him and arranged a time for me to go there on Saturday morning. When I showed up, he took me into the warehouse and he wasn't lying; there were boxes as far and wide as the eye could see, and most of them were sorted by title and number, making hunting easy. Turns out, this guy used to own five comics shops in another part of the country, but he shut them down and moved his entire inventory to the Pittsburgh area, where he operates an online and in person (but non-retail) business. He is an Overstreet pricing adviser, worked for CGC for a number of years and graded some of the rarest high-grade comics that ever went through there, and has owned pretty much every key Golden Age book at one time in his life or another. I spent about 4 1/2 hours there, two and a half picking and another two talking with him while he graded each book I'd selected individually, and it was an awesome time. I maybe overpaid a little bit for some of the books, but a quick check of eBay once I got home showed that his prices for the majority of them were right in line with what the market is for them right now. Anyway, this is what I got, with the only things not pictured being a handful of Spectacular Spider-Man issues around #200 that I was missing, but those aren't anywhere near as cool as these books.

That's interesting because the version of this film tie-in reprint that I have, which was published by Grove Press in the U.S. in 1968 (pictured below), has largely uncensored art in it (the left image in your triptych). I'd seen your edition online and always assumed that it was identical inside to the version I have, excepting the English translation, of course. I also thought the version that I have was totally uncensored, but that's not quite the case judging from the images you provided.

Lonestar auction piece arrived today, plus the books I added to it, and a small Amazon order arrived yesterday, so some pics... another Sam Glanzman Attu print-Attu and the Skull Cave... a pair of Heavy Metal issues #2 and #24... with those 2 I now only need 6 more to have all the HM 70s issues (3 of which are from '79), but need many more in the 80s and beyond. A little Conan goodness... 4 issues of Savage Sword (#11, 12, 18, 19) leaving me needing only 3 to finish of the first 25 (17, 22 and 24) and having about 4/5 of the series overall. More Conan-the Power Records Comic and Record set... I have a few of the Power Record Comics (1 Supes and 1 Wonder Woman) without the records, this is my first one that is complete with record. And lastly a couple of trades... I loved Barbarian Lord so much when I read it from the library, I had to have it, and picked up Vol. 7 of Hellboy (8 is on the way form a different Amazon seller but hasn't arrived yet, leaving me needing only 1 volume of Hellboy to get (though I still need a bunch of BPRD stuff). -M

Had the day off today, and it was warm but kind of gloomy and rainy, so after meeting my wife for lunch, I decided to take a drive over to an antique mall on the other side of the county I had never been to before. I explored 7 of the 8 wings they had and found a couple of interesting things... a handful of comics all $2-$3 each... Astonishing Tales #14 Ghost Rider #22 Savage Sword of Conan #100 Superman #317 (I had this as a kid and loved the Neal Adams cover) Hawkman #40 and pulled the trigger on something I had passed over a few times because of price but that I found a really good deal on-not a comic but comic related.... Dr. Evil (from the Captain Action line) as Ming the Merciless! Not a big toy collector, but I do get pieces here and there I really like and the Flash Gordon mythos is one I really like and Ming is a favorite villain of mine, I had eyed the reissue Captain Action Flash pieces when they came out, but had passed because of price-I got this for about half of the lowest price I had ever seen it before, so decided to snag it. Then when I got home, the other Hellboy volume I was expecting was in the mailbox... so two days in a row with stuff to post. -M

I ordered a bunch of comics from the last three or four years today. But they also had this for a reasonable price: It's the only issue of Hulk between #102 and #330-something that I've never read. So I'm really looking forward to it!

I didn't get Detective Comics #310. There are a few low-grade, low-priced copies for sale on eBay but they all looked a little too low-grade. With very vague descriptions and some had water damage visible in the photos, I decided to be patient. I bid on #305: I bid $10.75 and then forgot about it because the auction didn't end for a few days. It went for $11.25. I was looking at the description and the photos later and it was a steal for $11.25! I wish I had been paying closer attention. So I went browsing for some of the other issues of Detective Comics from that period I need and I ended up getting this for $9: It's low-grade but solid. It looks pretty good from the photos. The description admitted the cover is loose at one staple. Look at it! "The Mardi Gras Murder"! And who knows what bananashenanigans J'onn J'onzz is getting into!

Thanks to the youtube series Comic Trips that Bronze Age Brian turned me on to in another thread here, I discovered a chain called 2nd and Charles-think Half Price Books on steroids except it has the equivalent of a comic shop, a video game store, a toy store, a music store with vinyl, and a book store all under one roof. They also have a trademark sign in their stores that features the store name comprised entirely of books... a look at the store itself... the comic shop is all the way to the back and off to the left, it's a separate room within the store layout. It was a gorgeous day so after lunch my wife and I took a ride down tot he Dayton area and checked out the story, and I brought a bunch of old paperback, DVDs and vinyl to trade in. Got some store credit and picked up a few things-the big thing wa sone of my back issue holy grails-I'd been looking for an affordable copy of Showcase #55 for 10-15 years since I picke dup a #56 just beffore I moved out to Ohio. They had not 1, but 2 copies a VG/VG+ and a F/VF. I used the credit I got to snag the VG/VG+ copy plus some quarter books and miscellaneous stuff. The Showcase... some quarter books... and some miscellaneous stuff-an issue of Savage Tales Vol. 2 ($2), a Hellboy paperback novel ($3), a Conan pastiche by Andrew Offutt form the 80s ($1) and Amy, who collects magnets and had been trying to complete a set of Harry Potter Houses magnets for a few years now found the 2 houses she needed (Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff; $4 each) I also got a copy of the last volume of Sixth Gun (I ordered it with the 2 Hellboy trades)in the mail Saturday and included it in the pic... We discovered a lot of other little interesting shops to check out at some point (a lot were closed because it was Easter Sunday) and had a great ride, stopped and tried a new pizza place for dinner (good but not great) and generally just enjoyed the gorgeous spring day. -M

I'm curious mrp, what type of value did they give you for your trade-ins?

mrp, it looks like you've given me a new place to hit next time I'm out your way visiting my brother-in-law. I'm sure my wife will be thrilled.

Did a little roaming around on Saturday with my older daughter while the younger one was at a birthday party. We went to an antique mall where I found no comic books specifically, but I did find a copy of the Sam & Max: Surfin' the Highway TPB for $4. I've had my copy for years, but a quick scan of eBay showed that this version has sold recently for around $40, so it will be flipped this week.
Also went to Half-Price Books, as my local one was having a comic backstock blowout this past week. I'd already hit it up earlier in the week and picked up some random cheap things, so this trip only yielded two additional Flash books from the first Waid run, but hey, cheap comics are good and we had a great time hanging out together.

White Whale Accomplished! Going to WonderCon this weekend was a blast. Aside from meeting my friends and making new ones, the highlight was meeting Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez. Not only purchasing artwork from both of them, I finally took down one of my white whales....
Not only a pristine issue but directly from Jaime himself! Can't get more cherry than that! Had both of the brothers sign it. I can retire from comics now...
