Got these two in the mail. Now I only need 2 to complete the Kyle Raynor run.

Went out to the lcs today and rummaged some more in the new old stuff box they have. Thanks to Crimebuster mentioning this in his Matt Baker video, managed to pluck this out of a run of Lassie issues they got in... Lassie #20 one of the few issues with Matt Baker art that is still affordable. I never thought I would be able to own a Matt Baker comic, but for $3 minus my discount, I do now. and some of those Baker interiors... I picked up a few other things as well... I went back and got some of the other Phantom issues that were there two trips ago but I had reached my trip's budget that day, so picked up these 8 issues of Phantom today... Still working on my run of 'Nam, these were the two lowest issues I needed... and picked up a few single issues on some runs I am working on... issue 4 of the Gold Key/Whitman Battle of the Planets series #4 of the 1970 Hardy Boys series from Gold Key... and #9 (he final issue of Tragg... -M

Looking through those Phantom issues, I didn't realize #18 and #19 published by King Features both had Flash Gordon back-ups, 18 has Flash Gordon by Wally Wood and 19 has Flash Gordon by Gil Kane. I'm very happy to have these now (not that I wasn't before, but the idea of Wood or Kane on Flash Gordon makes me very excited).

I recently bought a few odds and ends I saw locally for cheap: a couple Luke Cage, Marvel Two-in-Ones, etc. I messed up one thing, though: I bought Marvel Tales #59 & #60 thinking that it was after #60 that they started cutting pages from the original Amazing Spider-Man stories in this reprint book, but turns out it was #58 that was the last issue with the full 20 pages. Curses!

I remember that some Gold Key comics had Whitman editions of the exact same comic... maybe they were sold in those 3 Fer bags that had the Whitman logos? I also had the original Gold Key of a digest with Barks duck stories that had ad pages and then later I got the Whitman edition of the same digest and there were no ad pages. The back cover was blank yellow and the cover price was higher. I had a number of the King Flash Gordons and they had amazing art; later Charlton took over the titles and I remember some Ditko & Wood collaborations on a Charlton Jungle Jim probably commissioned when it was King. This 150+ page softcover book arrived today and it's a real treasure! Aside from all the stories from the six Brave & Bold issues really well colored, there is also an intro by Julius Schwartz, and some admiring quotes from others in the back with a few Kubert cover reproductions. The only slight flaw is all the B&B covers don't appear, just one. For something I got at cover price thirty years after publication in like new condition that's not much of a drag, maybe I could even print the six original covers out postcard-size to keep with this? And guess what, I've never read about half these stories!

Got this in the mail today. A little more rough than I'm used to as it was a fair with a detached top staple, but I didn't pay much.

The (A Suivre) magazines I posted about a couple of pages ago arrived yesterday. It was a good job the missus knew about them. I would have had serious trouble sneaking them into the house. They're not small. Those 14 comics weighed in at 5 kilos!

What medium was used for printing these books?? Vellum? Papyrus? Lead sheeting?

So I broke down and made my first purchase via ebay in almost 14 years. I decided to look for a copy of DNAgents 24, and didn't find one at a price I liked for the shape it was in, but I did find nice copies of two other Dave Stevens covers that were on my want list to complete runs at decent prices and since I had a $5 ebay coupon and I could combine shipping, I decided to pull the trigger. These should arrive some time next week... World of Wood #1 and Vanguard Illustrated #2 I have been working in completing runs of both of these series for a couple of years, but these issues in particular have been hard to find due to the Dave Stevens covers, so assuming they arrive with no hitches, I can now take those off the list and work on the rest of each series. -M

Fortunately for me, I got most of my Stevens cover collection completed in the late '80's-early '90's when they were still relatively cheap. There's a few Stevens oddballs that I'm still hunting for, but they're not well known. I also have a few framed Stevens prints (including "Betty's Bath", signed & numbered) and a few more signed and numbered editions (Vampirella & Mr. Monster) that haven't been framed yet. I also have a personally autographed picture of his ex-wife (and primary figure model) Brinke from very early on in her scream-queen career.
With Dave's work, it was love at first sight for me way back in Starslayer #2. I know he did some inking work here and there prior to that, but the styling in The Rocketeer really hooked me. We lost Dave way too soon.
Don't forget World of Wood #2, which has the best of both worlds-- Wood pencils with Stevens inks!

Don't forget World of Wood #2, which has the best of both worlds-- Wood pencils with Stevens inks! I have that one already, and it's a great cover too. Once #1 arrives, I will only need #5 to complete the World of Wood line (and I'll just need #3 with the Al Williamson cover to complete Vanguard Illustrated). -M PS I have one more Dave Stevens cover (Alien Worlds 4) on the way from Lonestar, part of an order I placed earlier in the week but hadn't posted about yet. It's due to arrive sometime on Saturday-assuming no delays with w few other goodies I'll post about when they arrive)

I used to have a full run of Vanguard Illustrated, but I sold them during a clear out of my collection maybe six or seven years back. The covers were great, but being an anthology series, I found that the interior content was wildly uneven and mostly lacking. Still, whenever I see somebody here has got an issue, I do feel a little pang of regret. I don't really miss them, but it was a series that took some finding to complete, so I do miss owning them for that reason.

There were some good stories, but there were some stinkers too. Of course, I've also had similar experiences with Dark Horse Presents and Cheval Noir-- some really nice covers used to sell certain issues with rather mediocre content inside.
