Last purchase for a while I think. A couple of towns over is a comic shop called Bookery Fantasy ( The Captain has been there on my recommendation). They've been operating since the mid-70s I believe and the current owner has run it for over 30 years. They are possibly the biggest buyer of collections in the area and have two storefronts across from each other-one is the collectibles shop and focuses on back issues, movie posters, lobby cards, pulps (they produce a pulp price guide that is one of the standards in the hobby) and vintage paperbacks. It's only open Wed-Sat. The other storefront focuses on new comics, recent back issues, rpg materials and has a bargain basement with tens of thousands of dollar books. They are open Tues-Sun. My day off since we reopened has been on Mondays, so I haven't been there yet this year, as they were closed for a few months during the Covid shutdown. Since I took a few days off this week because my wife is on vacation (and celebrated her 50th this past weekend), I wanted to make a trip over to it while I was off, and since I am back to work tomorrow, today was the day. I only picked up a couple of things at the collectible side, a few supplies, some golden age bags and heavy duty mylars for the Matt Baker books and Son of Sinbad book I've picked up recently, and then these four comics... The store has a sliding scale of discounts based on how much you spend, starting at $20, so those four were just over $20 before discounts. And the G-8 book has a cover blurb about war birds and egg bombs, who can resist that? Not comics, but I also grabbed some vintage paperbacks while there... some comic related-The Phantom, The Avenger, Ms. Tree and then a Fu Manchu novel, a trio of Perry Rhodan books and a handful of Raymond Chandler. The two bagged books were $5 each, the rest were $2 each before discount. Across the street I raided the dollar books for the following... working on the Milestone books as I find them... some misc. DC stuff (First Wave Spirit, Legends of the DCU and an issue of the late 80s Blackhawk series) a pair of interesting indies... Planet Comics #3 with a William Stout cover (they had a #1 over on the collectibles side with the Dave Stevens cover, but it was priced at $75 so wasn't coming home with me) and an issue of Gene Day's Black Zeppelin they also had a bunch of $2 magazines, and I was tempted by a large run of Comics Revue, but I've spent too much recently so passed, but did pick up this one as I have been curious to sample some Modesty Blaise... and lastly, saw this one and couldn't resist for $1, especially with this week's Classic Cover Contest theme fresh in my mind (though I am not switching my cover to this one) ... Kung Fu Simians! I plan on taking a couple weeks off from getting books and allow my war chest to replenish itself as I have depleted it the last 6 weeks or so. -M

I came across these for what I thought was a good price while searching for war comics. I've never read any of it, but it sounds interesting and Wally Wood is an artist I've seen lots of praise for, but I'm not very familiar with. I also have volumes 5 and 6 on the way. Nice looking books. shaxper reviewed the series and it didn't appear to be too good. Oh, it had it's moments. The Steve Ditko stuff was some of his finest output, and Len Brown, Gil Kane, and Ray Bailey all turned in some fantastic work too, but it definitely isn't consistently high quality. Very very hit or miss.

I recieved another package today. Paid more than I care to admit, but it was worth it for me to not have to track them down as these Archives are finally becoming fairly HTF at a reasonable price. Sgt Rock was a big part of why I wanted to give war comics a shot (along with Enemy Ace) and the two stories in DC Goes to War definitely lived up to expectations, so I'm really excited to read these.

So I splurged a bit. I bought a Kubert book I've wanted since I learned of its existence, but never thought I would find an affordable copy. I found one with a starting bid at about a third of what I usually see it listed at (just a few dollars more than Lonestar is buying it at for that condition), so I took a chance and put a bid in, and lo and behold, no one else bid. Shipping was a bit high, but the book was still under what I would have ever expected to pay for it, and so I now have it. Not quite a grail for me, but close... Son of Sinbad #1 (it's only a 2.0 but for a book from 1950 I am ok with that. Now I just have to wait for this to arrive to finally read it... -M Not enjoying being 'that' person but... you do know the top and probably the bottom have been 'trimmed' right? And severely on the top, cutting off a text banner completely. Then again, if it's as white-ish as it looks that's a nice 2.0! I came across these for what I thought was a good price while searching for war comics. I've never read any of it, but it sounds interesting and Wally Wood is an artist I've seen lots of praise for, but I'm not very familiar with. I also have volumes 5 and 6 on the way. I loved every one of those Tower comics I ever had... so much gorgeous art! Maybe my favorites were the Weed back-up stories by Wood, but there was a memorable Dynamo battling ancient style Romans by (I think) Reed Crandall. Trying to pull the trigger on an affordable deal within Canada to get Spider-Girl #5-16 and Annual 1... hope I can.

I greatly thank @mrp for telling me about Bookery Fantasy a number of years ago. I have family in the general area and whenever I am out in the region, I always try to slip in a visit to the store. They usually have a selection of reasonably-priced Silver Age and early Bronze Age books on sale, of which I have availed myself numerous times.

Then again, if it's as white-ish as it looks that's a nice 2.0! I am not all that concerned. It's a book I never thought I would own in any condition. It also looks like someone used marker to retouch the color on the black cap as well, which was noted in the item description on ebay. I am not going to submit it for grading, and don't anticipate reselling it, I just plan on reading and enjoying owning it, so flws and attempted restoration tricks aren't really a concern for me. If I was planning on submititng it or reselling it, it would be an issue, but I'm not so it's not. -M

Yeah, there's always something interesting there or across the street, though his stock was a little low, as a dealer from Californa had been in and cleaned him out of all his romance books and a good chunk of some other non-super-hero genres he had in store. He was in the process of bringing stuff in from one of his storage units and grading/pricing to restock the day I was there. -M

Since work has been picking up for me a bit lately, and because I was on holiday in Wiltshire last week, I stopped into a comic shop in Glastonbury, Somerset and treated myself to £30 worth of old back issues. Due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic on my livlihood, these are the first comics I've bought myself in 2020! Though it's not a pricey issue, I'm particularly pleased to have picked up Marvel Team-Up #48, which features the first appearance of Police Captain Jean DeWolff, who is one of my favourite members of Spidey's supporting cast from my youth. All these comics were on my "wants list"...

Those are my second favourite Raymond Chandler paperback covers, after the ones Tom Adams did for Bantam, I think it was - though these are actually truer to the time period than Adams's are. The Lee Falk and Sax Rohmer covers look good too - interesting that the Phantom doesn't appear in costume on The Curse of the Two-Headed Bull.
