Posted at our old home on 12-15-2013 My 2014 Goals: 1. Read more. I am going to come in around 1000 books read this year and I would like to push that to 1200 next year. 2. Buy fewer single issues. I've acquired almost 1,000 floppies this year, so my progress in reading has been essentially neutered by the acquisition of a like number of new books. Luckily, my Want List is getting much smaller, so I should be able to cut this number down. 3. Buy more collected works. I started buying Marvel Masterworks for some select titles this year (Daredevil, Thor, Hulk) as a way to get the classic stories but not pay the classic issue prices. Ebay can be helpful, as I just acquired a couple of DD and one Thor Masterwork books for approximately $20 each (shipping included), and with 10 issues worth of stories in each one, $2 per "issue" is much better than the $5-$7 minimum price tag on most of the floppy version. Specific Reading Goals: 1. Read X-Men/Uncanny X-Men from start to finish, all 500+ original stories in a row. 2. After that, read Defenders, Hero for Hire/Iron Fist/Luke Cage, Power Man/Power Man and Iron Fist, and Master of Kung Fu in order from start to finish. 3. Time permitting, possibly start reading Captain America from start to finish. Specific Buying Goals: 1. Finish a bunch of short series where I need fewer than 3 issues to complete (Avengers: The Initiative, Avengers Spotlight, Doc Savage, Jungle Action, Ka-Zar, Marvel Two-In-One, Supernatural Thrillers). 2. Complete runs of Ghost Rider (5 issues left) and Werewolf by Night (7 issues left). 3. Buy a minimum of 1 new Masterworks per month, specifically early Daredevil and Thor collections, so that I can complete those series and start reading in 2015. 4. Add at least 50 books to my Star Wars collection for as cheaply as possible ($1-$2 per issue, if I can). How did I do toward my goals this year? Let's see:
A.1 - I've read 1026 books this year, as opposed to an even 1000 last year. Better, but nowhere near the 1200 I wanted to achieve. A.2 - I purchased 567 single issues this year, so a 43% reduction is a "win" in my book. A.3 - I bought 15 Masterworks and 1 Omnibus this year, all but one significantly below retail price. That's more than 2013 by far.
B.1 - I read Uncanny X-Men from the beginning until approximately issue #400, then I lost interest. Half a win. B.2 - Didn't read any of these. B.3 - Started Captain America in the later Tales of Suspense issues up through issue #113 of the regular series, then got sidetracked.
C.1 - Of the series I listed, the only ones I did not complete were Doc Savage (still looking for a decent-priced #1) and Jungle Action (still looking for #5 & #8 without breaking the bank for books like that). Half a win. C.2 - Got close. Only need Ghost Rider #1 & 2 and Werewolf by Night #1, 2, and 32. Half a win. C.3 - Did this, although I did not complete DD or Thor. However, I did complete The Avengers, so that might be my next read after Captain America. C.4 - Did this as well, as I added 67 issues of Star Wars for $126 ($1.88 per book).
6.5 out of 9. I'll take it.

Here's what I wrote: Funds are limited at the moment, so my goals are pretty scaled back this year compared to last year. 1. Complete my run of Jughead vol. 2. This should theoretically be easy enough as none of these comics are worth anything, but even though there's very little demand, there's also not much supply either. The print run on some of the issues I need is under 10k. And I just don't want to pay much either. But I should be able to do this, as I am only missing 55 issues. 2. Complete Jughead vol. 1 #178-up. I am also only missing 54 of these, which would give me #178-352. And as above, there is almost no demand for any of these, so they aren't worth anything either. But the print run on the 80's issues was very low for the time period (like 65-85k) and nobody was saving them. Finding some of these is a real pain. One of these is also the only expensive post-code issue of Jughead thanks to having the 2nd appearance of Cheryl Blossom. That issue is likely to be the real sticking point. But if I can accomplish my main two goals (which is 99 back issues, most of which I expect to get for a buck or two), it will give me the last 379 issues of Jughead, or everything from 1970-2012. 3. Plug away at the Superman Family reviews. I still have 13 years worth of Superman continuity to get through. Rather than buying tons of tomcis this year, my goal is to read some of the huge backlog of back issues I have accumulated. This is the major chunk. 4. Read JiM/Thor #113-209. I have read some of these, but there are still quite a few I haven't read yet, and I haven't read them in order. I've read #210-up and #83-112 in Essential form, so I want to close the circle. 5. Focus my collection. I am running out of storage space. And some of the things I used to collect, I'm just no longer really passionate about. I need to decide whether to keep some of these runs or sell them off to make room, plus I could use the money to buy stuff I am currently excited about. Here's how I am doing so far: 1. COMPLETE! 2. Of the 54 issues I needed, I am now down to just 3. One of them is still #325, though. 3. Have not done this at all. 4. Have not done this either. 5. Well... I have gotten rid of several runs, but I've bought even more new ones. So this isn't going so well at the moment. But it's still ongoing. Since this update in May, I pretty much have made no progress on any of them. But: 1. Still complete! 2. Still missing the same 3 issues. One of them was available from Mile High but I didn't want to spend $8 for one trashed random 80's issue of Jughead. Another is available from mycomicshop, but only in 1.0, which is too beat up even for me. And #325 remains impossible to find. 3. Did a few, but not as many as I wanted to. 4. Did not attempt. 5. Backslid. Now have literal piles of comics sitting around my room as I try and figure out how to sort them. INstead of slimming things down, somehow I now have like 24 issues of Power Man. That's going the wrong direction.

I remember mine 1. Make a big purchase for a key issue of Amazing Spider-Man. Either 121, 129, 50, 238 or Annual 1. 2. Collect more Captain Marvel. 3. Finish V for Vendetta run. 4. Get back into more Batman. 5. Go to a comic con. Updates on each one: 1. I am working on this one. Could be within the next month or so, I have been watching a number of these keys waiting for the best condition/price combo. 2. I recently bought Captain Marvel 1-19 issues. Sadly, the condition was much worse and very poorly advertised on ebay so I am returning the lot. 3. Have not added much more here, still missing 4 issues. 4. Bought some nice Detective issues for a good price and a big lot of about 60. Probably added about 70 issues or so since the goals. 5. Wanted to go to a con in Northern Michigan in a few weeks but I dont think I can make it I did okay!
1. I purchase ASM #121....and its a beauty! 2. Sadly, I lacked here. I am on the hunt for original first print Death of Captain Marvel graphic as we speak 3. One issue left! 4. Got back into Batman, some newer stuff from mid nineties but still Batman 5. Sadly, no con for me yet. But I am planning it for 2015!

Mine are pretty limited. I found someone planning on meeting the Hernandez Bros next month, and he was generous enough to agree to get my Love And Rockets #1 signed for me. I have a strict comic budget that does not afford me to buy anywhere near as much stuff as I would like, but I'd like a Hellboy Library Edition and the Love And Rockets Companion, which I will probably buy on Black Friday when I allow myself to spend $100 on trades and hardcovers online. And the rest is just read more of what I have sitting here unread. I've done none of this, except read quite a bit of my unread material. I still want that Love And Rockets Companion. Completely forgot about it.

Here's Mine: 1) Catch up on my reading! I've run out of space in the 'to read' milk crate, and there are now several piles NEXT to it... so yeah, no shopping for a while. I've got: - X-Books from the early 90s... I was reading PADs X-Factor, and decided to grab the issues from X-Ecutioners Song I don't have, which lead me to a bit of a run on Uncanny and X-Force - Next year or so of New Mutants (72-85 or so) - A smallish Superman pile from the triangle era - Avenging Spidey, a bit of the Dan Slott Spidey, and a big run of Spectacular Spidey - LOTS of Masterworks of all different eras - PAD's Hulk
I definitely plan on getting back on track reviewing Untold Tales and Kyle Rayner... hopefully soon. I'm thinking of doing PADs Hulk after Untold Tales... The Kyle thread will like be going for quite a while.
For purchasing, the next stuff I want:
-Finish Golden Age Namor Masterworks
These are tricky, since I try not to pay more than $1 an issue if I can:
- Complete Avengers v. 1 from 200-up.. I have from 230-325, and about 1/2 of them after 325 at present. - Get the last 10 Iron Man v 1 I need in the 100s , and maybe grab the couple recent trades I don't have. That'd give me every Iron Man comic from 100 Up
Other than that, I generally buy based on what I've been reading and enjoying, so I'll see what strikes my fancy as I read my back log.
For re-reads:
There's alot of Vertigo I want to revisit... Sandman/Lucifer/The Dreaming for one, Transmet and Books of Magic. I also have been thinking of reading 2099 again, but I'll probably save that for when I can do a review thread for it
As far as progress goes: I've kinda failed on the 'catch up on my reading part.. more because I found some great deals on stuff I had to get. I have read the Spideys, but most of the rest is still there. Soon. For Purchasing: I've made some progress on both Avengers and Iron Man.. I think I only need one more 100+ Iron Man (maybe 2) and I got a nice chunk before that. Avengers I got a bunch of scattered ones towards the end of the original run, so I have about 1/2. No new Masterworks lately, I want to read what I have first, I think. Lets see: Catching up on Reading: I have, a bit, but I not as much as I'd hoped mostly because I got a great deal on the Starman run, and ended up Reading that (all 81 issues + extras). I have made some progress though. Review threads: The Untold tales kinda failed.. maybe I'll get to that sometime. I did do the PAD Hulk stuff (some, in the overviews thread), and finally got back to my Kyle Rayner thread. I've also got the Silver Age DC one (which has been fun) and the non-Comic, DS9 thread (same)... That'll do me for now Purchasing: I have an order on the way that (I think) will complete my Avengers from 224 or so up.. close . Once it comes in I'll read them and make sure I didn't miss any before moving on. For Iron Man, I snagged a bunch of pre-100 issues (about 20 of them), so that was exciting.... still have those last couple I need above 100 to make a nice long run, though. IIRC, I have about 55 issues left to complete the original run (which, sadly, includes the expensive Demon in a Bottle and first appearance of Thanos... at least I have #1!) I ended up getting a bunch of DC instead of more Marvel Masterworks, so that was good... I have a pretty good pile of both to go through, which I've been doing a bit at a time. No re-reads for me (too much new stuff), but I'm hoping to change that in 2015. Overall, not great, I'd probably give myself a C or so for goal completing, but I had lots of good comics to read and purchase, so that's the important thing!

My goals for 2014 were less collecting oriented and more geared towards runs I wanted to read and review threads I wanted to do. Obviously, the migration to the CCF put a halt to most of that. As of now, here are my goals to be accomplished within the next three months (December): - Finish moving the remainder of my review threads over to the CCF (only two remaining!) Still working on the last one. Shouldn't be much longer. Done Never happened. Done Oops. Think I might just read these sans reviews in 2015. Late 2015 or 2016 2015 or 2016 Early 2015 Started reading and wasn't all that impressed. Will read sans reviews. Likely 2016
