Incidentally, it does occur to me that this could easily be a prank, but I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best all the same.

Dang, I hope for your full and speedy recovery Norm; I've always loved your work.

I met Norm about four or five years ago in Winnipeg and he was everything a fan could have hoped for. Really nice guy, willing to talk for as long you wanted, and the only thing we disagreed on was my opinion that he was the first artist who made me believe that Batman's appearance would genuinely frighten criminals. "What about Neal Adams?" he asked. I told him that Adams' Batman would definitely intimidate criminals, but it was he who made me realize that Gotham was populated with criminals who were a superstitious and cowardly lot. I was serious, too - Batman was around for almost half a century before he started using the shadows the way Breyfogle taught him how.
I'm certainly not suggesting that Norm's stroke is made all the more tragic because he draws Batman really well, but at the same time I can summon up so many happy memories with his work that I associate it with a sense of personal invulnerability, that he should suffer this setback - and he's a young guy, only 51 - that it's all the more jarring. I follow his posts on Facebook and he's a terrific guy - an individual who puts the lie to the idea that you should never get to know your heroes.

Apparently according to a friend of his on FB, he's just today been moved to the ICU, so there's at least some improvement.

It gets slightly more depressing, apparently Norm didn't have any health insurance and is looking at some pretty hefty bills not only for his hospitle stay but also for his treatment in the months to come. I don't have much(who does around the holidays??) but I still gave five bucks to his fund and I hope the rest of you can find it in your hearts (and your budgets) to do the same. www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/legendary-batman-artist-norm-breyfogle-stroke-fund/281723

Oh, never mind. Dammit to hell. The most powerful country in the world can afford universal, tax-funded medical care. Most people would benefit from it. Why is it not implemented yet? I hope voters ask themselves the question the next time they're in a position to decide who sits in congress and the senate. Of course, it would mean there would be less money to salvage predatory banks that play with subprime mortgages and pay fat bonuses to their directors. Decisions, decisions..

Having my own medical care problems with my wife and her state provided care, which is sub par to say the least. Though, I did find a loophole in the system. If I divorced my wife legally, yet still lived in the same house, still being the only source of income, she could get full medical, dental, and psychiatric care that is worth the tax dollars US citizens pay out. But just because we (my lone income with her and two children as dependents) can't afford it, there's only a certain level of care provided. To top it off, with my annual raise at this job in January, depending on what it is, if I make too much more I could loose what little care she gets along with the children's. Got room up there in Canada for four more RR?

... which of course is pretty much what I was going to say, RR, except that I gave up in disgust & despair because I could've said the same damned thing every day for the entirety of my life, & I have no doubt whatsoever that I'll be able to say it every day for the rest of my life, no matter how long I live.
Again: Dammit. This isn't even a civilized country by any measure that matters.
