I don't personally love a big ferocious curl but if the staples are rolled slightly one way or another, I don't mind at all For example, on the shown comic, I would not care at all if it looked like the before version.

Cover contests like this one and other war related ones make me wonder why in the world war comics have not had their day in the sun. Maybe it will come. Granted it is a tough subject matter for some to get into as it literally is real life horror but the artists who worked on a lot of these books capture it so very well.

I thought that was odd...it explains though why my dad always sees a 20 cent comic and assumes its from the later 70s. He has done this all my life when I show him what I have picked up. Maybe the store/company at the time purchased a bunch cheaply that had previously gone unsold and then sold them in store. It was really the only comic exposure my dad would have (as he would read the comics whilst working the later hour shifts when the store was quiet in between his customers). In his defense, he could also be a victim of time-memory compression, which affects all of us as we age, but the older you get, the worse it gets. Happens to me all the time. I think about something in the past, and remember it within a self-imposed set of circumstances or tangential events, only to find that my memory has erroneously misplaced it in the real-world timeline... and then I think to myself, "surely not, has it really been over (insert number here) years since that happened?"
I'm very good at remembering things that happened, but not always so good at remembering exactly when they happened.
A good point! He could be misremembering when he worked but if he worked when these books were on the shelf, he would have been 11-12 years old and he does not think that to be the case....

Hi all! So my dad has been reminiscing about his days working at a convenience store in Ontario, Canada called Beckers back in 1978. He was a teen at the time and he remembers very very clearly having copies of Werewolf By Night 1 and Luke Cage 1 on the newsstands in the store at the time (and for anyone doubting his memory, refer to the “help me find a comic for my dad” thread lol). He was floored when I told him both those issues came out years earlier. Would this had been common back in the day? A store getting older stock in that was 5 or so years old? He says they sold the comics for cover price too at the time. He seems to recall more “second” or “third” tier titles though, so maybe at the time that stuff was cheap to get as new old stock and sell in rural Ontario, Canada? Not nearly that long, but I vividly remember buying comics from as much as 4-5 months apart at the same time. There was also a store that sold the Marvel Giant-Size books in cellophane two-packs at least 4-5 years after they originally came out. I thought that was odd...it explains though why my dad always sees a 20 cent comic and assumes its from the later 70s. He has done this all my life when I show him what I have picked up. A number of years back, I decided to pick up some war covers that spoke to me. This made the cut...the colours, the image, just everything about it made me want to own it so I bought it.

I would never buy an Aquaman comic as he does not interest me. I would buy this though for the cover alone

I would never have found it without @jaska 's post about Tales of Suspense #18. This was truly a Marvelous Team-Up! I'm glad I could at least provide an "assist" on this one When I read the description, I didn't immediately place it, but my "Ditko sense" did go off and a quick search confirmed that hunch for the earlier version of the story. pinkfloydsound17 - so glad it worked out! Very much so! I now also have gift add on for dad's birthday come December

Yeah I was deep down the DC rabbit hole personally, examining stories from their anthology style books

Honestly, I go first with my brain and something it recalls
Then, if nothing stands out, I start searching and it provides me joy to peruse various covers (usually on Mike's Amazing World) and I sometimes "waste" half an hour just looking through various years and what was on the newsstands then.

Sadly, he does not think this is it. Says the art and appearance of the robot don't match his memory. I mean, he could very well be thinking of a robot from another story (he is adamant about the caterpiller tracks and giant spike or something protruding from the chest). He must have read this story in some capacity in his life though because everything else lines up exactly....unless another comic copied the story exactly but changed the robot's appearance?

Take a look at Tales of Suspense #18. It doesn't exactly match the visual description you gave, but very close on story: Definitely seems to be a dead ringer! I will pass this info along and see what dad recalls, much thanks!

I have zeroed in on Strange Adventure as being a possible anthology series from the time period...no luck yet. Was it known for having some stories be two parters? Dad was pretty adamant that the ending was a cliffhanger, suggesting a following issue would conclude it (which I thought was odd for an anthology series but I have not read enough from this era to know)
