It's not Stan didn't do anything. It's about who created the characters. Stan wrote the dialog, and that soap opera dialog was a big factor in attracting readers. He was the editor who kept everything together. The connected Universe was more him than anyone else. He was a GREAT PR man (his biggest talent) promoting the Marvel books as exciting and cool. But what he didn't do is create all or most of the characters. They did not originate with him and then he told an artist about them. (as he claims) This is the bullshit story he lied about for most of his career, especially after Kirby and Ditko left. Marvel, whoever the owners, wanted to sell this story, since it meant that the royalties Goodman promised Kirby and Ditko, would never be paid. I have no problem giving Stan credit for the things he did. But he does not get off without criticism for maintaining a self serving lie that hurt the true creators of these characters. Lee is in the ironic position of having created "The Marvel Universe" without actually creating most of the elements of the Marvel Universe. There's a lot to be said for taking a couple great and a bunch of fair-to-middling characters and nurturing an editorial environment and tone that allowed them to act as a single universe and appealing brand. Unfortunately, comic fans don't value that kind of creativity.

I read the first 4 months of Sundays of Friday Foster last night. Good stuff. It jumps a little as the dailies aren't collected and some things get resolved/set up in the dailies, but the opening synopsis of each week's Sunday keeps you up to speed. The art is gorgeous and the storytelling strong. I look forward to going deeper into it when I get the chance. -M I read this (via Hoopla) as well. Thought it was solid, but not earth shattering.

As I noted in my own review of the first six issues of Hulk earlier this year, when I was a kid reading the pocketbook reprints in the late '70s, my favorites were issues 2 and 6, almost entirely because I liked the art better in those - i.e., Ditko had a hand in both. As for the story itself, yeah, it was pretty silly, but then again, I didn't think any of those first six issues was a winner. It was really apparent that nobody, not Kirby, not Lee, not Ditko or anyone else, had a clear idea of what the Hulk should be, and the all-over-the-place character of the stories really reflects that. I was just thinking that. It was clear Stan believed the character could be something, but wasn't sure what that would be, especially if he was going to be distinct from Ben/Thing.

Although I voted for Wonder Woman, why limit it to super-heroes?
With covers like these, I'm pretty sure there's an "Untold Legend" of Fritzi Ritz just waiting to be told... Too bad Richard Corben is no longer around. He'd be the perfect artist. Whatcha think, MDG I'm sure she's got stories to tell that so far have only appeared in Tijuana bibles. more seriously, I don't think Aquaman's life has been full documented yet.
