Round 41 has endedMost on my list were mentioned, but those that weren't: Eyes I expected to see (ah, I kill myself.) From Marvel I had: Man-Thing and The Mindful One. (Man-Thing, I guess with both the Heap and Swamp Thing mentioned that this one would be redundant). From DC: I had Andrew Bennett from I, Vampire. From Image Comics: I had Pitt on the list is another one of the little kid/big monster duos. (For those interested how this one works, I try to come up with at least 10 answers for every question to see how viable they are. 1 answer becomes the example, the others I put in the expect to see list (unless they are really obscure, then usually they become either the example or I don't mention them). The Hulk! (He’s not always particularly friendly, but if you stop attacking him with tank battalions and showering him with missiles, and then make sure he’s well-fed with hors d’oeuvres, beans and fruit pies, he can be very charming.) Hulk smash. What’s friendly about that ? There are people who would pay good money for that...
Sigh, I was about to claim this one was an all-ages forum to cut off some avenues of thought for future question. Can't really pull that now.

Round 40 has endedWith the amount of aliens, monsters and bug people around in comics, another relatively easy one, though people generally went for the more interesting options. Eyes I expected to see (ah, I kill myself.) Marvel: The X-Men are a source of weird eyes: We had Cyclops and Eye-Boy mentioned, but we also have Psylocke (cybernetic eyes), Gambit (unusual colours), Cable (one cybernetic eye), Longshot (Eye glowing when he uses his powers) and of course, Peepers. Coldblood-7 and Deathlok had the one regular, one cybernetic eye look that many have. The Orb (not the original one, that was just a mask, but the second one) And Agamotto has Eyes hanging around all over the place. On the DC side: Superman's eyes can do many things. Same for the other Kryptonians and Daxamites. Trigon has 4 eyes. I think Raven also had those whenever her demonic side became stronger? European: Aniel, second son of Thorgal, had red eyes. Manga: Goku Furinji, main character of Midnight Eye had a cybernetic eye. Alucard from Hellsing has "eyes for days" in his shadow form. Round 39 has endedI think this was one of the easiest rounds as detective is one of the most popular professions for comic heroes and even if they are not a detective themselves, there will be one in their supporting cast. (Either that or reporter/journalist) And for a lot of them, I'm taking your word for it. Detectives I had expected to seeMarvel: Mac Gargan, the Scorpion, started out as a detective hired by Jameson. Mystique was a master detective early in her life, masquerading as a male, while working with her partner Irene Adler. Guess which name she had back then? Colleen Wing and Misty Knight And of my personal favourites, Dai Thomas from Captain Britain, who figured out Captain Britain's identity with some good old detective work. On the DC side: You would expect Batman, but I had the professional detective in it and as far as I know nobody ever paid Batman to do this. John Jones, the alias of a certain Martian, is employed as a police detective so does count. Basically half the cast of Gotham Central. The Riddler left crime to work as a detective for a while. European: John Blacksad Dylan Dog and many many many more. Like I said probably the most popular profession in comics. Round 38 has endedBen Grimm was definitely the most popular Sportsman, as he was mentioned twice. I would have also counted him for boxing. Why did I count TV wrestling as a sport instead of "sports entertainment"? First so that people would have had an out as there were a ton of comics about wrestling, but more importantly, because within the comics universe wrestling is real with no kayfabe (or at least a young Peter Parker certainly seems to think so.. and that poor wrestler probably just wondering why the kid wouldn't stick to the script). Also talked about some soccer comics, so let's proceed to: Sportspeople I had expected to seeWe had Roy Race mentioned, also from Tiger, Billy Dane, star of Billy's Boots (also published over here, but with a different name). Not to be confused with Billy Zane. Don't know that many DC characters and most of my candidates were already mentioned (Cyborg, Sportsmaster, Booster Gold and Wildcat) European comics: Michel Vailant and Julie Wood were both motor sports (cars and motorcycles respectively). Marvel: Northstar was an Olympic skier. Bullseye and Boomerang were professional baseball players. Then I was really expecting these guys: Battlin' Jack Murdock and Happy Hogan. Both professional boxers. (Add the Absorbing Man to it as well, but I just remembered him). And the greatest of course: Hercules, inventor and champion of the first Olympic Games (won all disciplines) Current Score: 80sChild 13 adamwarlock2099 1 berkley: 4 Calidore 38 Cei-U 38 chaykinstevens 11 codystarbuck 38 Confessor 8 DogHouse Reilly 29 driver1980 37 DubipR 38 EdoBosnar 38 Farrar 38 foxley 38 Hoosier X 38 icctrombone 37 Ish Kabbible 4 james 26 jason 18 Jeddak 38 jtrw2024 29 MRPS_Missives 38 MWGallaher 3 Ricky Jackson 38 riv86672 37 Roquefort Raider 35 shaxper 2 Slam_Bradley 38 spoon 29 supercat 16 tarkintino 1 wildfire2099 12 Round 39: I Think the Killer was the Culprit!Name One Character who is a professional detective.Example: Gil JourdanChallenge specific rules or clarifications1a. There are lots of titles which will never get translated to other languages, but there are also comic publications that are aimed at target groups that are not (or maybe very sparsely) represented on this board. Combining both, I have to mention "Tina", a comic anthology aimed at young girls starting in 1967 that is still published today. Originally British (where it only existed for a year, before being merged with another title and lasting about 5-10 years there), but this is about the dutch version of it: Tina is a weekly magazine, originally containing only comics, these days containing both comics and non-comic articles. It was aimed at young and teenage girls, but these mostly young girls. Many of the comics are imported from other publications, also aimed at young girls, but there are also a lot of comics created for this publication over here. www.lambiek.net/aanvang/tina.htmwww.lambiek.net/aanvang/tina2.htmwww.lambiek.net/aanvang/tina3.htmThis is just the dutch market, similar comic magazines exist in other languages.

I didn't nominate him because he's somewhat obscure, but let's at least name him: Vincent Larcher, a football player (that's soccer for us in North America) whose exploits were published in Tintin even before my time. I learned of him thanks to a vary rare thing in European comics at the time: a cross-over with the series La Section R, which followed a couple of sports journalists. Sports comics were not really my thing when I was young but they were usually surprisingly entertaining. There have been *so* many soccer comics (I had Roy Race on my list to be mentioned and driver immediately mentioned him. I also have another from the same publication still on my list). I was debating which of the various slightly less known soccer series (so dutch, belgian, french etc.) I used for my example, having as options like Long-running series based on a Flemish TV-series about a low level amateur soccer club. Never read them, but I have seen the series and it's more of a regular sitcom with the soccer just as a backdrop. Long running series, had some album-length stories about a soccer club that was terrible (Knudde is a dutch slangword meaning useless, terrible etc.), but these days mostly known for its newspaper comics (still running today) that makes jokes on the state of dutch football and occassionally other sports.
Dutch series, starting in the 70s that run to the 90s, continued recently by a new creative team. Following a talented soccer player from his hometown club in a small dutch town to an international career.
A French-Belgian series.
or maybe one of the many oneshots were other characters are competing in soccer competition like:
(Of these I only have a few issues of Ibanez (including the one pictured above) and a few issues of F.C. Knudde (not the one pictured above). The other series I never even read, though I did buy some Ronnie Hansen comics once as a birthday present for a classmate who was really into football.
None of these are on my list of "expected to be mentioned" when this round ends BTW. These are all titles I don't expect anybody to mention.
In the end I went with Kick Wilstra, because it's A) ancient and B) with a name like Kick, you don't even need to explain what sport it is (though I guess somebody may guess Karate or something like that).

Ok, since pro wrestling counts, The Thing I hate to say it, but Ricky Jackson had Ben Grimm as his entry (but for his football career), so I'm kinda willing to accept both.

I have bought (but not completely read yet) - Ultimate Spider-Man volume #1 by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto (I have not read any Spider-Man for a long time, but an adult Spider-Man who is married and has two children appeals to me). - Starstruck by Elaine Lee and Michael Kaluta. This is the IDW collection of the series. This is a comic that completely passed me by (though I saw a mention of it in the Name One thread recently) until I saw Brennan Lee Mulligan (Elaine's son) run a RPG games with his usual crew set in this universe at dropout.tv. - On the European market: a new Franka, a new Carmen McCallum and a new Travis. Three of my favourite series.

Flash Gordon? The comic strip version was a polo player (the 1980 movie updated it and made him a quarterback). Flash Gordon was already mentioned by MRPs_Missives, so you still have time to change. I have about 10 characters on my list left who haven't been mentioned with several reasonable big names.

As most comic characters, especially in superhero comics, are well-trained and probably practised some sports at the some time or another, to limit the anwsers a bit, the character has to have been seen taking part in a competition, match, tournament etc. Just seeing them lifting some weights and running some laps is not enough. Also some basketball or baseball in backyard with your classmates is not enough. 1b. Duels and battles to the death even when organized by the Gamesmaster, do not count. Basically, if it would get you arrested, it does not count (though if the character in question is cheating and the competition itself is legit, then it's allowed). 1c. Athlete will refer to any form of sports, not just athletics. They do not have to be a professional athlete. 1d. Professional wrestling will count as a competitive sport for this thread.

Grendel: Devil's Crucible: Defiance #4 by Matt Wagner and Brennan Wagner What Happened Before: Grendel Prime has returned to Earth after centuries travelling through space. Back on Earth, the rule of the Grendels has ended, they are now prosecuted by the new rulers, the Necro-Lords. Grendel Prime now travels with two Grendels in hiding who lead him to their hideout. Plot: Grendel Prime is introduced to the other Grendels. They accept him with a little hesitation and ask him to become their new leader, but he refuses. He does help them with their actual new leader though; a character we haven't seen for a long, long time.
Art: It's Matt Wagner again, so same as last time.
Overall: I complained about the last two issues feeling like filler. This one definitely doesn't and I get that we needed a few issues with little happening before dropping right to the reveal of the last page. Overall I'd say the mini had a strong start and finish, but it's definitely a prologue to the entire Crucible series which is set to be 3x4 issues.
Mystique #1 by Declan Shalvey
What Happened Before: Krakoa is done, the mutants are living among the humans again and Mystique is back to her old ways.
Plot: Mystique is after a device called "Protozoa" and runs into several agencies trying to stop her. Meanwhile Nick Fury Jr., now working for the CIA, is tipped off by Nick Fury Sr. about Mystique and starts to investigate her, signing up with S.H.I.E.L.D. (an office with a lot less budget right now than before) again.
Art: I really like Shalvey's art. It's simple, but effective and good at story telling.
Overall: This is a 5 issue mini-series and with a straightforward premise and a smaller cast (Mystique vs. Fury with some smaller characters to support) I think this is going to be good. There are references to years of comics in it, but it's not information that you really need. Shalvey also drops some hints that there may be another party involved (with Mystique being spotted in two different places around the same time), so as any good spy thriller there are already hints there for betrayals, backstabbing and misdirection.

Behemoth, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier from Marvel's Godzilla series I'm doubting here what to do, somebody already mentioned the Helicarrier, but you mention a specific Helicarrier and I always want to award being specific.
Quoting every judge in every movie and TV-series ever: "I'll allow it".

I'm not exactly sure on the differences between boats and ships etc. So I will not be picky should the wrong one be posted. Ships carry boats. I've seen that mentioned before, but it doesn't seem to apply all the time; submarines are far too large to be carried by ships, but still referred to as boats, but also get the USS prefix and that last S stands for ship? (you're far more knowledgeable on this subject though, so I'll defer to you)
