X-Men #31
Thomas/Roth/Tartaglione
'We Must Destroy the Cobalt Man'
Plot: Danger Room scene! Hasn't been one of those for a while. It seems the purpose of this one is to give Angel a clean bill of health. After some fancy flying and teamwork, the Professor gives the guys the weekend off.. Bobby and Hank go off to find their girls as usual, Warren says he's going for a drive, and Scott gets 'sent' by the Professor to give Jean her library books back (from a few issues ago).. apparently he's both wants some alone time and to play matchmaker.
As Scott leaves, Warren offers him a ride, and says he was planning on going to see Jean.. they agree to see her together and have her pick one of them. Or Ted. We'll see how that works out.

Over at Metro college, Jean's buddy Ted Roberts is introducing her to his brother, they have some brotherly competition, then end up in a diner, where Scott and Warren come in. They hang for a bit, then Warren leaves and the others go to see Ted's brother's lab.
While Warren runs into an old friend, Hank and Bobby listen to Bernard the Poet with their beaus.

Over at Ted's brother's lab, Jean and Scott get to look at pretty things, while Ted finds out his brother is a former Stark employee that thinks he can make better armor than Iron Man with Cobalt, and sell it to the government... apparently he left Stark because he disagreed with Tony protecting his tech. Ralph puts on the suit, and while explaining to Ted the radiation is such that you can only use it for 2 hours, said radiation makes him go loopy and attack. Scott and Jean get into their fighting gear, but Cobalt Man defeats them... Jean is flustered and worried about Ted, while Scott calls the Professor on his fancy new 'Mento-Call' wrist watch to get the other X-Men involved.
Hank and Bobby get picked up randomly by Warren as they head to the scene after making excuses to their dates, and run into the Cobalt Man, who assumes that Iron Man sent them and attacks. Ted arrives with the others and the fight is on.
The fight is not one of the best... apparently, the plan is to distract him by using everyone else as bait while Iceman freezes his power pack, then Cyclops melts the ice to short it out. It works like a charm, and with out the radiations, Ralph is back to normal and realizes Tony Stark knows what he's talking about.
But wait, does Ted's snarky comment mean he figured out Jean's secret id! To be continued!
Not the best story ever, but kinda fun.. Hank and Bobby double dating is always amusing.
Plot: B
History: B- (First Candy Southern)
Notes:
- Jean sure is popular! Stan and his red heads...
- It feels weird seeing other characters call each other 'Tiger'... I guess Stan thought that was a regular part of 'hip' vocab.
- Warren sure gives up on Jean quick... after chasing her for going on 3 years or so! Pretty sure this is the first appearance of Candy Southern.
- Here's another instance of making 'beat' types look bad. For all they were trying to be hip, these guys sure were squares! Surprising from Roy Thomas, who at this point was what, like 23?
- I wonder, did alot of men in the 60s randomly bug out on women for no reason? Superhero girlfriend types do seem to take it stride far better than anyone I know would!
- Stan with the illiteration again.. Ralph Roberts. I mean, really? really? Or maybe Roy Thomas was just doing it to be funny?
- Speaking of funny.. here's an armored hero that is specifically set up as an Iron Man bad guy, and he never fought Iron Man! He does have a couple later appearances (Hulk and Defenders in the 70s, then cameos in a couple of the modern events).. unless he did in one of those events maybe. Still, never appeared in an issue of Iron Man! I wonder how many other supervillains Tony avoiding while on dates?
- It seems Ted Roberts might be the most intelligent innocent bystander ever.. it seems he perhaps figured out that since Marvel Girl and Cyclops were at the lab, then suddenly in the fight after he drove Scott and Jean both places, there might be a connection! Shocking!
-- 'Mento-watch' really? Roy's been watching too much Dick Tracy.
-- Seems like those two crazy kids will get together soon, and the angst will be over. Warren seems pretty happy with Candy, which in hindsight we know works out decently for him.
-- I thought for a second when Warren got to that club I had gotten lost and ended up in Shax's Teen Titans thread... groovy, man.
