Patriots just traded Jimmy Garoppolo to my 49ers for our second round pick. Not sure how to feel about this now. So strange. Especially during the middle of the season. I'm guessing that Shanahan and Lynch didn't like the upcoming QB class in addition to not wanting to take a chance with losing out on the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes. Got a leg up on Garoppolo before he hit the free agency market himself. Small spark of excitement in a very forgettable season. I really don’t understand it from the Pats side if they were indeed offered the 12th overall pick in the draft from Cleveland 6 months ago. They were hoping to resign Garappolo and had been in negotiations with him since the spring and they went nowhere and were breaking down. If they didn't sign him and he signed elsewhere, they might have gotten a compensatory pick from it, but that would have limited what they did in free agency this offseason because they had to make sure to lose more than they got to get that compensatory pick. So once it became apparent that they weren't going to be able to keep Jimmy beyond this season at a price that worked for them, they made the move to deal him and make sure they get something back for it. Had they been able to sign Garoppolo to an extension that fit with what they wanted financially, the wouldn't have traded him, but once apparent he wouldn't give them a team friendly deal and was either going to get a big payday from them or test the market, his days in New England became numbered. It happened this week because the Pats are on a bye this week giving them time to get whoever they sign or trade for as a back up some time to get up to speed on the system before the next game. -M

Seems that the Patriots tried to essentially "have their cake and eat it too" until the final hour. Can't blame them. Brady says he wants to play a few more years, but 40 is 40. He could fall off a cliff at any moment. Would have been nice to have Garapolo to replace him down the road, but he's already been riding the bench three years. And he's set to be a free agent. Patriots waited as long as they could. Might as well try to get something in return for him. Hoyer has been released. He'll probably go back to New England.

They offered "a second and some change".

I could definitely see Brian Hoyer back in New England backing up Brady.

With most sports at the pro level, I think it's important to always keep in mind that money is king of the hill, and integrity is always secondary. There will always be scandals and controversies. You kind have to deal with this if you're going to get the best product that is available. And I'd rather keep my head down to a degree and be surrounded with contract talks and ownership squabbles, than watch an inferior product like college ball. Speaking of integrity, when is the last time baseball didn't have a steroid abuse/cheating problem? Like I said, every sport has skeletons in their closet. I'd be willing to be that there's more steroid/PED use in the NFL than in baseball, but nobody (certainly not the fans) really want to know about it, and the NFL's testing program isn't very rigorous.

However, baseball is just way to slow of a game 90% of the time. People want to see stuff happening. They don't want to see games that end up 2 scores to zero, which could be a normal day at the office for a game.... Also, baseball is terrible at marketing it's sport to new fans. Terrible. Everyone knows who Curry or James are in the NBA. Or Brady or Rodgers are in the NFL. Who has that kind of bravado in baseball? Jeter was probably the last one. Umm, Papa, have you watched the Series? Game Five finished 13-12. Seven homers, a triple and 8 doubles. Eight RBIs with two outs. Game 2? Eight homers in another extra-inning win. 22 HRs so far, with at least a game to go. Oh, and David Ortiz, who just retired last year, had bravado by the truckload. And even more than bravado, he had duende. Bravado was not one of Jeter's qualities. Steadiness, yes. Haughtiness, yes. Hustle, yes. But not bravado. PS: Altuve has bravado. I think he also has duende.

An on random joe on the street is going to know who David Ortiz is compared to Lebron, Curry, Rodgers, or Brady. Or even Newton. Ortiz ain't being talked about in urban barbershops I'll put it that way. Unless you're in Boston maybe. Jeter was a good player, that played in New York, was handsome, and dated hot women. That is why people knew who he was.

So...in NFL news, the trade deadline has been the most active in years.
My Niners got Jimmy Graoppolo from New England for a 2nd. I'm happy.
Panthers traded away Kelvin Benjamin to Buffalo, which is a strange one.
Dolphins traded Jay Ayjai to the Eagles for a 4th round pick.
Texans sent Duane Brown to Seattle for picks.

PS: Check the ratings, too. the Series is beating football. The World Series I would hope can beat a random football game in the middle of the season. Right, but the problem is that hasn't been the case. Even a Thursday night football game was topping MLB. The trend has reversed, though, over the last couple of years. Even that marathon five-hour barnburner the other night retained its audience well past midnight. (It helps having a West Coast team involved, too.)

The Garoppolo trade could have a big impact on the Kirk Cousins situation.
He’s still tight with the Shanahan’s and all indications were that he would be a 49er if he left DC.
Personally, I think the Redskins would be dumb as hell to let him hit the market. Cousins is no Brady or Rodgers, but he’s still a borderline Top 10 QB just hitting his prime.
And with the Jets set to have over $80 million to spend in free agency, they could throw the bank at both Cousins and Le’Veon Bell and still have plenty of money to spare afterwards.
I can dream at least. Because even if the Jets only finish with 5-6 wins, that still in all likelihood takes them out of the Rosen/Darnold sweepstakes and they absolutely HAVE to find a QB.

It's really been an entertaining series between two 100 win teams. It should be watched and it should go to 7 games. Also factor in the kneeling , which is hurting ratings, and Baseballs out meaningful games should be beating Football in the ratings.

Also factor in the kneeling , which is hurting ratings, and Baseballs out meaningful games should be beating Football in the ratings. Do you really think kneeling is hurting ratings? I don't buy it. There are a bunch of possibilities, from the lower quality of play to oversaturation to injuries to top players to the cyclical nature of fan interest. Maybe the ratings are just coming back to Earth after a few over-the-top years. And, yes, the Series should be outdrawing the typical Thursday night football game. The point is, that it hasn't for a good while and now it is, for the second year in a row. The NFL won't be going broke any time soon. Unless gambling on the games is somehow banned.
