Cubs won last year, Stros this year. Padres in 2018 ? They'd have to improve by 25 games or so. Doable? It seems like every year some team overachieves and comes out of nowhere to contend. About 4 years ago the Stros were a laughing stock.

True, which is how they stockpiled all those low draft picks that they hit on big-time: Correia, Kuechel, Springer, etc. Not sure if SD has that deep a reservoir of talent. We'll see.

I was being facetious about the Padres, but it's kind of cool to see team rise above their mediocrity. Hey, The Mets came within one series of winning it all in 2015.

I'm a Met fan since 73 but I was annoyed on how much they were touted as the best 4 pitchers of all time after only 1 year. It felt like a jinx and now all of them are injured.

What a series of highs and lows for Houston sports fans over the last 24 hours.
Astros win the World Series, and now the Texans lose Deshaun Watson for the season to a torn ACL.

He's right , of course. The WS is exciting every year. Now if they could finish a game before 1230 am ... Game Lasted 5 hours and 44 Minutes and I didn't get home until 5:20 in the morning, I stayed the whole time and my brother had to leave at 11:30 to go to work the next day. I didn't stayed for the whole time. I stopped at Denny's (4:45 in the morning) for breakfast because I was hungry. Game in 2012

The World Series I would hope can beat a random football game in the middle of the season. Right, but the problem is that hasn't been the case. Even a Thursday night football game was topping MLB. The trend has reversed, though, over the last couple of years. Even that marathon five-hour barnburner the other night retained its audience well past midnight. (It helps having a West Coast team involved, too.) I know. Ratings are down across the NFL this year. The point isn't it should take a championship game to compete with ratings from a random game in the NFL.

The Garoppolo trade could have a big impact on the Kirk Cousins situation. He’s still tight with the Shanahan’s and all indications were that he would be a 49er if he left DC. Personally, I think the Redskins would be dumb as hell to let him hit the market. Cousins is no Brady or Rodgers, but he’s still a borderline Top 10 QB just hitting his prime. And with the Jets set to have over $80 million to spend in free agency, they could throw the bank at both Cousins and Le’Veon Bell and still have plenty of money to spare afterwards. I can dream at least. Because even if the Jets only finish with 5-6 wins, that still in all likelihood takes them out of the Rosen/Darnold sweepstakes and they absolutely HAVE to find a QB. The Redskins are past the point of no return really. They had their chance to lock up Cousins two years ago. They basically refused twice, and no face the possibility of him leaving or franchise tagging him for a third straight year which would be unheard of. I wouldn't put it past the Redskins owner though who is probably one of the most petty men on the planet. He was never going to let Cousins go to the 49ers and kick with it Shanahan out west. I'm glad we pulled the trigger on Grappolo.

I don't have time to read the article, but I'm guessing the gist of it that we all all anticipate baseball overtaking the NFL in the near future? Because that isn't happening. I checked just for 2016 and the NFL made about 13 billion in revenue sales compared to MLB's 10 billion estimation. And that is with the NFL having a substantially smaller product size. So if you're a baseball fan, I just wouldn't start necessarily doing backflips because the World Series beat out Thursday Night Football ratings.

And what it holds for the future?
