The NFL Draft is coming up. It's in Nashville, Tennessee this year. The first round will be exciting as usual. I hope the 49ers can get Nick Bosa. My favorite defensive player for the 49ers over the last handful of years was Justin Smith. Even before Jim Harbaugh came, he was a true difference maker, and it seemed the defense really started with him. It allowed other guys like Ray McDonald to shine, and at the second level Patrick Willis, Ahmad Brooks, Aldon Smith, and Novorro Bowman. Those glory days have certainly faded, but someone like Nick Bosa can be the next elite piece to help turn around a defense. Much like Justin Smith was. Depends what the Arizona Cardinals do though. If the 49ers hadn't won that meaningless game in December against the Seahawks, they would have the number one pick.

This is a nice trip down memory lane regarding the Bulls dominance, and how it all came crashing down after the final championship against the Jazz.

1) After knocking out (STUNNING) the Capitals, the Carolina Hurricanes begin their second round NHL playoff series against the NY Islanders tonight. Naturally, the Carolina Panthers get much of the pro focus around here in these parts lest we forget though, the Hurricanes have won the Stanley Cup previously. It's great seeing them reach this far into the playoffs again especially under new coach (and former captain and member of that Stanly Cup winning team) Rod Brind'amour. Though I hate that all the TV analysts just wanted to discuss how Ovechkin and the Capitals choked again. C'mon, give due credit to the Canes, they earned it.
2) I watched the NFL Draft last night just to see if the Cardinals would indeed select Murray as their #1 pick. That's ALL I've been hearing about for the last month so it was becoming annoying. Holy moley at the huge fan crowds that were present! Geez, it looked more like a New Year Eve's celebration instead. Godell is just reading off prospect's names, folks, that's all.

Hurricanes finished the sweep. Now it's on to the Eastern Conference Finals. Woo-hoo!! I can live with this, as I had no interest in seeing the blankety-blanking mother-blanking Islanders advance, particularly after sweeping my Penguins in the first round. Of all of the teams left, I am only rooting for one of them. When I was younger, I adopted the Quebec Nordiques as my "second" team, primarily because of my Acadian heritage and the Nordiques' jersey was adorned with the fleur-de-lis (I actually still have my youth Nordiques jersey that I have unfortunately long-since outgrown, but my wife looks really cute wearing it). When they moved to Denver and became the Avalanche, I continued rooting for them and not feeling bad about it, since they were in the Western Conference and everyone knows you need a team in the other conference to follow, especially if your team is not doing well or gets knocked out of the playoffs early. Of the other six teams, I wouldn't be unhappy seeing either St. Louis or San Jose win it, seeing as neither of them has hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup previously (and St. Louis is going on 50 years of existence without doing so). Columbus hasn't won a championship yet, but as they are a developing rival for the Penguins and major jackwagon John Tortorella is their coach, they can wait as long as St. Louis or longer before getting one. Dallas is boring, Carolina is a bunch of guys who no one outside of North Carolina has ever heard of, and heaven forbid Boston win another championship this year, as their fans are already insufferable as it is (no offense to mrp or Prince Hal) and for them to get another one would be just painful.

As an old-time Whalers fan, I cannot stand the Bruins either, so can agree I don't want to see them win. -M

No belief in the Bruins?? I'm definitely one of those insufferable Bostonians because I can't think of anything better the B's and maybe even the C's joining in on Boston's string of wins.

Really? Would you go so far as to say insufferable? It's only been 12 championships since 2001. We did come up short five other times during that period (not counting the Revs going 0-5 in their championship matches.) Not even a little sigh for us? Go, B's!

Should by any miracle, the Bruins and the Celtics win their respective championships, Boston will achieve something no American city has ever done to date, have the current champions of all 4 major sports leagues simultaneously. Boston could literally claim to be Titletown.......
..........c'mon Hurricanes and Warriors!!!!

Not to be picky, but they started as the New England Whalers and became the Hartford Whalers only when the WHA merged into the NHL (mostly because the Bruins fragile ego couldn't abide them claiming all of New England and threw a temper tantrum to make the league require the change ). -M
