If you're one of the thousands of American soldiers and civilians living in or near Seoul, I'm not so sure you think threatening to "destroy" North Korea because it's fun to talk tough is a sound foreign policy. Ditto for the tens of millions of South Koreans. Ditto tens of millions of Japanese who are within striking distance of North Korean missiles and are caught in the cross-fire.

Eh, I hate the term fake news as much as the next sane person, but this really does fit the term. He mispronounced a country's name, simple as that and plenty of presidents and indeed everyday people have done that in the past so it's not incredibly newsworthy. Now if he doubles down and tries to say it wasn't a mispronunciation, sure ridicule him all day and night but so far he hasn't done that so the level of focus it's gotten seems disproportionate to the deed.

Well, Andy Borowitz's column is a humor/satire piece. I used to read them in The Funny Times, when I still subscribed. Not quite The Onion, on satire; but, that one is pretty close. I would certainly kick in money to send Palin somewhere remote. Like Neptune.

Okay, so we live in the reality where an NBA player has to take the high road against the US president. Clearly the darkest timeline.

I'm literally seeing people equating murder and spousal abuse with a peaceful protest of kneeling during the national anthem. Just when I thought Americans values couldn't get more skewed.

Clearly the darkest timeline. just got off my weekly call with my Dad who immediately brought politics into it, by asking me if "i started my day off kneeling" then went into a lengthy diatribe about how the NFL Owners are all greedy bastards, and they should be writing a requirement to stand for the National Anthem into contracts. and how shameful that these players who make more money in a single game than most make all year are so "unpatriotic" yeah. . he's been watching Fox news/ One America Network. and has no problem at all defending what Trump said (and my discussion back with him about free speech, 1st amendment rights, and how I completely understand the reasoning that some have given for *not* standing for the National Anthem) fell on completely deaf ears). just sad. If I didn't feel that I owed it to my Mom, to keep in touch with him at least once a week? I would have completely cut contact with him.

The American thing to do is to stand for what America is about, and to resist the corruption of the American ideal.

He's the one that started it so of course you should give your opinion back. Maybe he'll never change but who knows.

Judging from the WP article, I was going to write "that librarian is an ungrateful and insane %$# and a perfect example of the Left gone wrong!" Then I checked the letter itself. Here it is, and it is FAR less damning that the newspaper makes it sound. In fact, it's perfectly fine! It's respectful, it expresses gratefulness, and while it does suggest that such attention might be better paid to schools in greater need, it is not at all a screed or anything of the sort. I personally think that calling the stereotypes in Dr. Seuss's books "racist" is going overboard, but that's a matter of opinion. I hold the same views of old Tarzan stories or Tintin in the Congo.

Not sure if that applies to the subject of this article. I wouldn't, had I been the librarian, handled it this way; I think it gives the opposition too much unnecessary fuel. But I certainly would have written to the First Lady. I hope I could have been half as eloquent a spokesperson for public education. On the other hand, her actions may draw attention to the destructive agenda advocated by the current Secretary of Education, who is determined to divert even more money from public education so that religious schools, private schools, charter schools and for-profit schools can educate their self-selected clientele without any accountability to the taxpayers. No matter what, the notion of the First Lady as a spokesperson against bullying -- cyber- and otherwise -- and for the kind of gentle, inclusive, environmentally friendly themes seen in many of the Seuss books has long since gone from irony to absurdity. Faced with the bald-faced shamelessness of the airquotes president and his administration, I am continually reminded of Pacino's line in Dog Day Afternoon (NSFW):

RR thanks for posting the letter. Let it be said I didn't try to say that the librarian was a bad person. Just not the person whose own moral and/or political guidelines are what justify what the school will accept into the library. As seen in the reprimand that she got from the administration for using school equipment and time for her political soapbox. The administration didn't even take a side saying she was right or wrong according to the article. Just that her actions were not appropriate for her job title. The teacher could have easily written to Mrs Trump and offered her opinion without involving the school and none of this would have happened. I am not trying to take a side her, just feel in this particular instance many things could have been handled a lot better than they were.
Hal while I agree that Trumps administration has done horrendous things to this country's kids as far as their education, I don't think it's a fair excuse. Mrs Trump has no political power. Only the influence any one wife might have over their husband. I feel it's very unfair to judge and scold Mrs Trump for her husband's politics and policies, just like people did to Mrs Obama for the same thing. It sends a very divisive message to young ones who might be observing. Just my two cents anyway.
