Oh, man. Hee Haw. That was the dual weekend horror of my childhood: my dad had to watch it on Saturday evenings, while on Sunday my mom watched the Lawrence Welk show. Couldn't stand either and usually shut myself in my room and read comics.
That said: RIP Roy Clark. I later learned that, as Slam Bradley noted, he could play the hell out of any instrument with strings on it. He was a friggin' genius, as seen in this clip:
(Similarly, I also grew to appreciate his partner in crime on Hee Haw, Buck Owens.)

Yes indeed Hee Haw was a Saturday night ritual growing up with my parents. Then Welk Sunday nights with the grandparents. Will miss Roy, but he and Buck are a reunited heavenly duo once more singing and playing for all the angels above!

Saw this while we were out for dinner. Roy was a fantastic guitarist and banjo player; not just country, but anything, as he demonstrated on the Odd Couple, Glen Campbell, Hee Haw and elsewhere. One of my favorites, from two legends that left us....
Ghost Riders in the Sky is the perfect vehicle for guitar virtuosos.

We even had the Hee Haw magazine here! Some of that corny stuff still cracks me up but the musicianship from regulars and guests was very high quality. Sorry to hear of Roy Clark's passing. Saw him once live in Reno, but only for a bit, couldn't stay for the whole show.

RIP William Goldman, author of the Princess Bride, and screenwriter of such classics as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All The President's Men. He was 87. -M

Oh, man. Goldman, too? It's a pretty packed week for this kind of news. And yeah, Goldman had quite a career. RIP.

Ben Bradlee to his two reporters in All The President's Men:
"You know the results of the latest Gallup Poll? Half the country never even heard of the word Watergate. Nobody gives a s**t. You guys are probably pretty tired, right? Well, you should be. Go on home, get a nice hot bath. Rest up... 15 minutes. Then get your asses back in gear. We're under a lot of pressure, you know, and you put us there. Nothing's riding on this except the, uh, first amendment to the Constitution, freedom of the press, and maybe the future of the country. Not that any of that matters, but if you guys f**k up again, I'm going to get mad. Goodnight."

It pleases me to no end to know that The Princess Bride is on many school reading lists.
Tough week, as we lost giants in the fields. Goldman wrote his first original script, after helping on another and writing an adaptation. That original script was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and it won the Oscar.
If only there were more like him in Hollywood, these days.

Man, I love his F-Troop Series and he was a joy to watch! ... I liked him on Mayberry RFD too.
