Titans #20 by Dan Abnett, Paul Pelletier, Andrew Hennessy, and Adriano Lucas. The Titans are disbanded and the focus this issue is on Roy Harper. He is taking on Intergang's drug trade and receives unexpected help from Cheshire. By the end of the story, they hook up, he wakes up dazed (did he do drugs the night before?), and Cheshire is gone with the drugs. Some old villains with ties to the Doom Patrol and the old New Teen Titans series show up at the end and that I enjoyed the last page reveal. I enjoyed the scenes with Roy. Lots of action and the conversation between him and Cheshire was good.
Donna is in the JLA satellite being tested (or under house arrest, lest she become Troia) and there is a quick scene with her and Wonder Woman. I feel bad for Abnett having to deal with the mess that is Donna Troy thanks to all the reboots, Crises, and her very poor adaption in the Finch's Wonder Woman run. There is a nice scene with Dick and Wally as Wally moves into his new home. Lilith, Tempest, and Bumblebee are mentioned but do not appear. To me, the theme of the story was the sense of loneliness and uncertainty experienced when a group of friends seems to be going their separate ways. Lucas's colors are awesome, especially during the opening sequence. Not a bad issue.

Archie #28 by Mark Waid, Ian Flynn, Audrey Mok, and Kelly Fitzpatrick
After the events of last issue, Archie finds himself ignored by Betty and Veronica and thanks to his natural bad luck aura, dating new girls is not going well. The splash page is hilarious as Archie strolls, unaware of the chaos around him. Betty and Veronica's friendship is strong as ever as they decide to go stag to the spring dance. Reggie gets lots of time this issue (finally) as he plots his next plan while ruining a movie for other patrons (not on board with how much of jerk they've made Reggie. (He was always more mischievous rather than outright mean) . The Blossom twins are there as well...and their birth Dad is making big plans. Although this issue was pretty much set up for the next story that will seemingly focus on Reggie, The Blossom Twins, and their father, I did enjoy it. The art, the colors, everything was great. Mark Waid delivers another great issue.

Captain America #698. Written by Mark Waid. Art and Cover by Chris Samnee.
Remember Cap Lives Again from Cap (2002) #17-20 by Dave Gibbons & Lee Weeks? That was a pretty good story arc.
 
And don't forget Cap (2013) #1-10 by Rick Remender & John Romita Jr as Cap battles thru the dystopian Dimension Z?
This feels like Waid's attempt to retell those stories with a few twists. Basically Cap gets frozen again in the present & thawed out in 2025. America has been decimated by the 40 Minute War in which 90% of America's population was killed including most of the heroes. Rampart now controls the remaining population & life is hell. Cap decides to fight back & take back America for the people.
We have seen this story line before. Cap thrown into a dystopian society & thru his will & fighting prowess remaking that society. This feels too soon after the Hydra Cap story line IMO. I had high hopes for this title with Waid writing but with this arc I have some doubts. At least Samnee sells the story with his art.

Flash #40. Written by Joshua Williamson. Art and Cover by Carmine Di Giandomenico.
Part 2 with Grodd. Grodd needs the Speed Force to cure a disease that is killing him. After mentally torturing Barry he steals Barry's speed force leaving him powerless. Wally I shows up & Barry tells him he has to be the Flash again in his place.
Oh yeah! Williamson has a good handle on how to write the Flash's villains. His Grodd is scary & mean but just finding a way to survive. Carmine's art is kinetic & beautifully shows Barry's torment as Grodd tortures him. I am looking forward to the spotlight on Wally I in this arc.

Marvel Two In One #3. Written by Chip Zdarsky. Art by Valerio Schiti. Cover by Jim Cheung.
Johnny is losing his powers. Ben seeks out Hercules to find out how Herc got his powers back. He takes them to a Dr Koul who reveals the FF have a connection to each other & prolonged periods of separation from each in separate universes is draining their powers. Johnny is down to 73% & Ben to 81%. She asks to go with them into the multiverse to find the Richards family.
Meanwhile Doom confronts the Mad Thinker to find one of Reed's inventions. The Thinker teleports Doom to Antarctica & goes a little crazy on the last page...
This title is definitely entertaining. I love the writing, the art, the concept. Yes this is one of the best Marvel Legacy titles right now.

Titans #20. Written by Dan Abnett. Art and Cover by Paul Pelletier and Andrew Hennessy.
OK. The Titans are no longer a team as the JLA has forced them apart as they look into the Donna becoming Troia mystery & how to prevent it. Donna is confined to the JLA satellite. WW spends some time with her. Dick helps Wally set up a new apt in Keystone City. But the main focus is on Roy as he tracks down a drug smuggling operation & runs into his ex Cheshire. They rekindle their romance... but Cheshire has an ulterior motive that reveals her involvement with some old Doom Patrol villains.
Mixed feelings. I love the spotlight shifted from Wally to the others but I miss the interactions among the whole team.
Overall solid story with some solid art from Pelletier.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #16. Written by Jody Houser. Art by Nathan Stockman. Cover by Ryan Stegman.
I had dropped this after #13. I felt it was too juvenile with art that I didn't like. However I saw Stockman was back on art & I really like this concept & I really LOVED Spider-Girl so I tried this book again with this new arc...
First the writing. It is still a bit silly but not as juvenile as #13. Peter is now a substitute teacher at Annie's high school which sets up father-daughter conflict. Stockman's art? What happened? Instead of the art he displayed in #5 & #10 this style is a goofy distorted cartoony style. Not a fan.
After a year of decent stories Marvel has let this title decline rapidly. Off my pull list again.

Archie, Jughead, Betty & Veronica take up the first half of this story as the 4 of them adjust to a "new normal" in their relationships. The second half of the book focuses on Reggie & the Blossoms. I like the focus on Reggie but Waid & Flynn go a bit too far in making him a jerk. I also like the sub plot to shift some focus onto the Blossom family. With the cancelation of the other New Riverdale titles (I fear The Archies will only be 6 issues) this book is the only title that these characters appear in.
Still love this title. Great art. Story quality dipped a little this issue.

Wonder Woman #40 by James Robinson, Emanuela Lupachino, Carmen Carnero, Ray McCarthy:
Swan's Song concludes in a not absolutely terrible issue...but it is not great either. Wonder Woman and boring, useless Jason track Silver Swan to the hospital where she recovered as Vanessa. Silver Swan kills everyone-patients, doctors, nurses in the hospital. Later, she attacks Jason. She and WW fight. WW somehow restores her to Vanessa (in a coma like state). She takes her to ARGUS where we find another WW villain in disguise, posing as a dr. Steve appears in a totally useless scene in the middle of the book fighting the Female Furies. Jason is gone at the end of the book. There are moments when the story could have been really well done, but the execution failed and once again, the book reads like fan fiction. At least the art (the pages by Lupachino) are beautiful.

At least the art (the pages by Lupachino) are beautiful. 4/10 I was very disappointed by my three regular comics this week. I expect Wonder Woman to be pretty bad every week. Detective Comics has been a little better lately ... but this Victim Syndicate story has gone on way too long. I am hoping that the destruction of this (the worst) version of Clayface is permanent and they won't be all angsty about in every issue until the next reboot. But it looks like a major plot point in ginning up some drama around Batwoman and then turning Tim Drake until his future evil obsessed self. Boooo! I was really liking Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, but this issue was pretty bad. Batgirl was hacking the Calculator, but she didn't tell Canary and Huntress ... for some reason. Well, now things have gone wrong and she told them about hacking Calculator and they're mad at her for not telling them ... WILL THE BIRDS OF PREY SURVIVE THIS BREACH OF TRUST?!?!?? And it ended up with the new Oracle being killed ... and it's all Batgirl's fault! Yuk! I usually finish storylines before dropping a title but I think I may just drop it now and throw the latest issue away and pretend like I never read it. |

Action Comics 997 by Dan jurgens, Brett Booth, Norm Rapmund, and Andrew Dalhouse:
While this story seems to have been going on forever, I liked this action packed issue. Superman and Booster Gold are defeated by Zod and his family. Things don’t look good for the Man of Steel at the end of the issue. Lois and Jon also are in a mess as Lois finds her father. Classic cliffhanger ending for all involved. The colors and art add to the story. The fight scenes with Superman and the Zod Family are quick, filled with motion, and have s cinematic feel. In fact , while I was reading this , I kept thinking what a great follow up movie to Superman II this would be. Classic Superman
Where all seems lost, but no doubt Superman has it under control. I’m sure Jon does too for Lois and his grandad.
