Disregarding #163 and 164, which I don't consider part of the same story, I gave it 5. I didn't like Roger McKenzie's recycling of the name Eric Slaughter from Doug Moench's Master of Kung Fu.

That's news to me. Never heard of that one. Looking at the character's page, I see no resemblance that would justify any sort of homage. We also don't know what plans he had for his character, because McKenzie didn't have any other run on any Marvel title, just some scant appearances here and there. Also, the crime boss version of the character would only be picked up twice, by Miller himself and much later by Brubaker. So we have a recycling of a very obscure character's name, by another one which turned out not to be much less obscure. Weird.
I would give these issues a 6.5. They all have the same strengths and weaknesses, namely Miller's pencils and McKenzie's scripts:
No idea what that sub-plot was pointing at, but I think we dodged a bullet not finding out.

I own the original 1990 TPB, and it is Highly Recommended.  I especially love that the bonus page about "The Secrets of Matt's Billy Club!" was included (XD)  |
