Amazing Spider-Man 15 Batman/Spawn 1 (Just to see what the hubbub will be about) Danger Street 1 WildCATS 2 Spawn is one of those comic blind spots I have, although I've always liked the concept and I had a few of the action figures because they were damn cool looking the comics just never got my attention...and I don't think Batman/Spawn will change my mind. I can't think of another comic where I did this but I literally stopped reading about halfway through and I don't think I'll pick it back up. The art was great, but the plot was nonsensical and the characterization was just bad. |

I'm batting a thousand this week with bad comics as the new Invincible Iron Man #1 was only marginally better than Spawn/Batman. The story was certainly more coherent and the murder mystery type plot of who was trying to assassinate Tony was interesting but my god that interior monologue was so incredibly overbearing that it sucked the life out of the book. This should have read like a tense, Tom Clancy style thriller but instead it was sluggish and bland.

BATMAN/SPAWN. Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo.
The Good: Great art. This is a really good looking book. Nice concept. Court of Owls. Battling for the souls of the important women in their lives. Bruce's Mom & Al's wife.
The Bad: Bad dialog and pacing issues. Todd should have gotten Scott Snyder as co-writer.
I also wish instead of another DC/Image crossover they could have done a DC/Marvel/Image crossover and added Spider-Man. That would have made history and it would have been a boost to the industry.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1.
Ugh. This is just a continuation of last volume and that one was so boring I dropped it. So no Iron Man reading for me until the next creative team.

I’ve been picking up Batgirls because I like Babs, Steph and Cass so much and I like to see what they’re up to. It’s been readable, and sometimes a little bit better than readable. A passable series.
But the latest storyline is really good!
I was thinking of dropping the title because I feel like I’m reading too many marginal comics lately. I picked up the Batgirls Annual on a whim. The latest storyline starts in the annual and then continues into the regular series (a practice that I don’t like), and this story is a step in the right direction to keep me more than marginally interested.
Cass and Steph have accidentally switched bodies because of a magic coin. Before they can figure out what’s going on, Steph (in Cass’s body) is abducted by Lady Shiva (that’s Cass’s mom!) and Cass (in Steph’s body) is abducted by the Clue-Master (Steph’s dad) and the two super-villains don’t know that they’ve got the wrong daughters!
It might be a few too many coincidences, but I’ve been enjoying it more than any other new comics I’m reading lately.
And as of Batgirls #13, Babs has enlisted Batman and Zatanna in the search for the other Batgirls ... and on top of that, Babs dresses as Batgirl for the first time in quite a while.

Not sure exactly which week some of these came out, but no one else posts much as far as random non-big 2 goes so I think this'll do  Hitomi #2 : Not surprisingly, Hitomi convinces Yasuke to train her, and hopes he can make enough money to get home while he's doing it. Really fun book so far, Hitomi is not the usual 'I want to be a Samurai' character.. definitely would recommend. Know Your Station #1 : I got this because Sarah Gailey is writing it, and I really want to read 'With Teeth' one of these days (haven't found it yet)... not bad.. looks like they're going for a locked room mystery on a space station. THe main character is both the investigator and the first suspect. Seems likely the computer is really the bad guy, but not bad... I'll stick with it. Dahlia in the Dark #1 : Noir-ish story mixed with some fantasy... a down on his luck former mob lieutenant ends up attacked to the daughter of an important fairy that surely will remind him of his astranged daughter and he'll want to save in some way. Pretty standard plot, but interesting enough to keep reading. Hexware #1 : This is the most unique one... after an attack (maybe terrorists? Maybe good guys and the main character's family are evil, not clear) Jesinder dies, only to have her android servant try to resurrect her. Kinda gives a bit of a Full Metal Alchemist vibe. Not sure where they're going with it, but I'm in. Lord of the Jungle #1 : I wonder how many times different publishers have put Tarzan's origin in a comic. I think they were striving here ot make it seem more 'realistic'. The interesting part is the framing sequence, which shows an old Tarzan returning to England (set in the 1950s). Hopefully, that's the main story and not the yet another origin tale. Fear the Red Planet #1 : weakest of the bunch.. evil corporation takes over the colony, there's a marshal, corp guy gets killed.. pretty standard stuff, and far less interesting than Dan Abnett's Badrock that I just read.. dropping this one. Pretty good batch overall though |

Pretty good batch overall though I picked up Lord of the Jungle when it came out(a few weeks ago? I can't remember) and thought it was decent. I really liked the art and while the billionth retelling of the origin was just okay the framing narrative of Old Man Tarzan was really interesting so I'm going to keep with it for a bit. |

Danger Street #1
Tom King is a hit or miss writer with me. While I find a majority of his work dull and rips off ideas without even acknowledging or crediting what he's ripping off, he can pull out some interesting writing. His Batman and his Bat projects are and were terrible. Mister Miracle was droll. Adam Strange was an exhausting white-man savior book. Human Target is a blatent ripoff of DOA but with gorgeous art. Gotham City 1963 is a weak telling of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. But King can make something interesting when given something of a blank slate, like he did with Rorschach and made an interesting read.
Here he does the same with Danger Street #1. Making an interesting concept of using the 13 issue run of DC's 1st issue special and creating a strong narrative. Using all the characters that were introduced in the book, King weaved an interesting start to the this 12 part series. Re-teaming with is Rorschach artist, Jorge Fornes, to make something worth reading.

I HATED Cantwell's run enough to actually drop the book, but I thought this one wasn't QUITE as bad. Seems like there's a light at the end of the tunnel for the mopiness and problems, at least. I felt like Tony was a bit more in character here.. well, I guess I should say the character as I prefer/view him. Still not great, but since I love they 'Armor Gallery' covers, I'll at least get those I think Monica Rambeau: Photon was also from this week.. seems like more of the same, and apparently they had her break up with Blue Marvel off camera? Or maybe it was somewhere else... not loving another 'character has emotional problems' type arc... but it was fun seeing her interact with Doctor Strange and Spidey. |
