Summary:Led by Robin, the Boy Wonder, watch as a "new" super-team bursts onto the scene: The Teen Titans!
Plot: Spinning out of his amazing Worlds Finest Mark Waid hits us with a modern retelling of the early adventures of the original Teen Titans in this new mini series and while perhaps not as pitch perfect as his previous entry it was still an incredibly fun start. It started out incredibly strong with a great retro feel as the Titans took down a kidnapping cult ( Kid Flashe's, "Not Today Satanists!" was perfect) with a great mix of action, character introductions, humor and drama. I really loved how Waid took the time to not only show us how the Titans interact with each other but how they interact with their mentors and how those mentors react to them forming their own team; it really solidified the idea that yes these are side kicks but that they are also their own people all while showcasing how their mentors are different and how that effects them. But, where the comic starts to stumble is when Waid introduced the “modern” aspect to it. While teen drama is an important part of the the Titans the friction introduced to the team here between Robin and Speedy about the team's social media presence just had me rolling my eyes a bit. I mean, yeah if teens got together today to make a super hero team it probably would be on tik tok...but I don't really want to read about that. That aspect aside it was a strong start and I'm excited to see how the team starts to mesh together.
Art: I think your enjoyment of Emanuela Lupacchino's art is going to come down to how much you enjoy a more stylized look similar to the likes of Allred and Samnee. There's a simple, slightly cartoony look to the book but I think it fits perfectly with the retro-superhero feel to the book so personally, while I find its not as detailed as Mora's work on World's Finest it is still none the less a really fun look.

Summary:Thousands of years before Hellboy there was Panya, a girl in ancient Egypt who witnessed the fall of a dynasty and was gifted with visions.
Plot: This is a book that I desperately wanted to enjoy because Panya the Mummy was one of my favorite supporting characters that Mignola came up with during his run on B.P.R.D. so a solo story for her is right up my ally...but this book just suffers from a serious case of prequel-itis. Rather than giving us a moody, ambiguous monster story we are instead "treated" to a very perfunctory feeling origin story taking us step by step how Panya went from an ordinary girl to a living mummy. And while a by the numbers "secret" origin story can sometimes be enjoyable if you can get past the reliance of the usual tropes and just take it for what it is, for Panya you can't even really do that because so much of what makes Panya work as a character is her mystery and the tension of how who she was and how she came to be was so artfully doled out in dribs and drabs. Sadly, this kind of development is something of a pattern for Roberson's work with the Hellboy Universe; he has a habit of telling rather than showing with everything just spelled out too cleanly instead of being open to the reader's interpretation. It's safe...and frankly a little boring. There's nothing offensively bad, it's all well written it's just not very exciting which is a death note for me.
Art: While Roberson may not be offering much that is truly new in the way of a story, the artwork by Mitten feels suitably impressive in places( I loved the battle between the Kitten and the snake for instance). And on top of that the backgrounds are just so incredibly lush through out the whole book, with some truly beautiful architectural work that provides a really immersive feeling to the world Panya inhabits. I just wish the story was up the quality of the art work.
