The only one worth mention for me was the Crossbones-Sin-Red Skull from Brubakers Cap run, which I missed doing the minimal research I did on everything else. They did get a mention by someone far more eloquent than I, so theres that. Im also a little shocked(in a good way) that the story is now available to use.

12. The Absorbing Man and Titania Forget your Simple Six and your Infatuous League, your Corto Criminals or Planetary Ne'er Do Wells. Frankly the only choices are the Titanian Twosome, the Absorbers, the 2, the only, Mr and Mrs Man. Look these 2 have been around for some time, why I remember Crusher outwitting those Avengers bums by turning into water and drifting away like the really really slow winner "cough" he is. Anywho, for some reason the marriage and subsequent pairing of Marvels Most Likely absolutely resonates with me, no matter how dire the situation they always have each others backs, exactly what us normal folks expect from our significant others. True love must never be discouraged, it should be encouraged, allowed to flower, to grow, to...blah blah

2. The Angel Gang
Well confessor wrote it all much more intalekshul than me can, but I do have to add that it is the black humor of the Dredd strip in the early 80's which was a huge selling point for a lot of us. Dredd began to come of age with the Cursed Earth Saga which led straight to The Day The Law Died and then less than a year later the Judge Child. The latter 2 stories were especially laced with humor from the ridiculousness of Cal to Fergie to the Jigsaw Man to the above reprobates, the Angels. As horrible and evil as they were, there was laughter to be mined. Beggin to poison a captive cos I aint pizzened anyone for a whole day, or Mean Machine going bok-crazy with his dial stuck on 4 and a half, these are the things that are glued into your brain forever. Much like a quote from DR and Quinch, circa 1985 that I still use...S'Alright

10. Captain America and Bucky This left me scarred for years, a quivering mess, no longer able to function in modern society. Cap fights ... Cap??? wait what??? Old Old Cap vs New Old Cap, this cant be, unthinkable and Bucky, alive I dont know what it is about this that meant so much to 12 or 13 year old me, I know it was years before I ever got to read it entirely. For my money the single best comic story, and man I love watching Sal have guys punched across a page.

6. Turk and Grotto The long suffering incompetent duo that first showed in Daredevil 69 ( holy cow, THAT I didnt know, thanks uncle google)well maybe Turk did. They always stuck with me, like they deserved a break, that DD was just a bully, hard workin stiffs like them had ta earn buck some way or other. My first encounter was around 158 - 160 or so, where Turk was working for Mr Slaughter, and was it Roger McKenzie writing???

6. The Beagle Boys
To be honest, the first team of villains I thought of a few weeks back, and they have really quite surprised me by almost demanding to be included higher up the list. They seem to be riding the nostalgia train for all its worth in my cerebral cortex, good on them(so to speak). Given that I havent read a duck book in 30 or 40 years...

Been out of town so playing catchup I thought I had posted for the 5th day, so apologies if I did but missed it when I was searching just now. 8. The Frightful Four Paste Pot Pete right, the greatest villainous handle you could ask for, combined with Medusa or the titanic Thundra (or golly, both at once). They always seemed like a light hearted foil for the overly serious Reed Richards, and I also love the way the Wizard and his clone(?) are handled in the modern book(which we wont talk about...ssshhhh).

#9Thanos and MangogThor( 1998) 19-25 , Annual 2000Marvel Comics ( 1999)Writer: Dan JurgensArtist: Romita JR/ Jose LadronnInkers: Klaus Jansen/Dick GiordanoThis might be my guilty pleasure of the 12 entries this year. I finally read this for this Classic Christmas and , in concept , really liked the team up. I will admit to finding the story to be just okay but the art was big and action packed in the Kirby style. That’s the saving grace of this run, that Romita JR really knows how to convey power even utilizing many double page splashes throughout the 7 issues he drew. The Annual had amazing art by Jose Ladronn in a related 12 page story. A few points about the book:
Thanos tries to gather artifacts of power. This isn’t original for the character as , in his past, he had gathered the cosmic cube and the infinity Gems. It feels like they are going to the well one more time. Thanos has a flat personality and is nothing like the classic Starlin stories. Mangog joins him as an ally but is essentially the muscle and comes off as a lackey in spots. Thanos takes on the role of a spectator while Mangog does all the violence. This is too much like the boring Darkseid style of appearance where he stands around with his hands behind his back while everyone does his bidding and I didn’t like it. Romita JR draws amazing action but he depicts Mangog in various sizes. I only `ever saw him as a giant in the other stories that he has been in. Maybe he is taking artistic license in order to make Thor his equal in some of the panels but it’s jarring in some spots. Mate that is just...damn Its weird, I can see Kirby and Windsor-Smith in those shots. If I had remembered this book I would have used it too, I did a quick look through my Thor stuff(JMS to current)but nothing applicable jumped out at me.

I just wanted to see more of them after reading reprints of early appearances, though I take it that there werent too many issues with them ? They pop up on a semi-regular basis, as they are a good group to throw against a team. I can particularly recommend Justice League of America #203-205 by Len Wein; New Titans #68-69 by Karl Kesel, where they get played by the Gambler II (grandson of the original) masquerading as the Joker; and Zatanna #4 by Paul Dini, where Zee takes on a rat pack-themed version of the gang based in Las Vegas Now that's the shot I should have used, one of Georges many awe-inspiring covers of the era.

11. The Wrecking Crew The Defenders issues at this time has some amazing Gil Kane covers, which combined with the beautiful Sal Buscema interiors made them irresistable, both to my 13 and 58 year old selfs. I dont know what it is about the crew that does it for me, maybe cos they just dont quit, they just stick to their schtick. Or maybe its Sal having them flying off screen in a trail of teeth...whichever, you always know youre in for a knock down dragout fight, no super clever malarkey going on here, just big boy fisticuffs with a side order of beatdown.

Here goes, its been a while but like riding a bike n all... 12. Batman/Judge Dredd: Judgment on Gotham John Wagner, Alan Grant and Simon Bisley
Judge Death, Mean Machine, and the Scarecrow I was in my late 20s when this arrived, unemployed after leaving my first real job, and going through the big crisis of faith about comics. Its around this time that, sick of moving 4-5000 comics multiple times a year for the last 3-4 years, I made the decision to sell. I had lost interest in 2000AD recently, believing that the first 10 years of the title were by far the most creative and effective, and although there were the occasional strip like Zenith the Galaxy's Greatest Comic wasnt too Zargaz anymore. BUT the Biz, on Dredd and freaking Batman. No way, No how was I missing that or this Its mainly Dredd's nemesis's (that just has to be wrong) that interested me but Scarecrows ability works well with the kind of absolute terror that Judge Death would invoke in most of us mere mortals. (Well to be honest it was Biz drawing the hell out of the book that was the #1 attraction)
